And then there are my favorites, the dragon boats. Each type is owned by different groups and share the use of the boathouse and the lake. TASCA offers sailing lessons, ROW New York practices on their sculls and HK Dragon Boat Festival has their weekly practices & annual festival around the lake. The boardwalk, docks and boat launches are in very well-kept renovated condition to service all the boat types. The large parking lot adjoining the boathouse provides ample parking most of the year except during the weekend of the HK Dragon Boat Festival when it fills up in the pre-dawn hours. The lake might seem stagnant but is actually flowing from north to south with plenty of wildlife such as ducks, geese, seagulls and the occasional cormorant. There are certainly fish in the lake due to the many marine birds diving for them in the water and the fish that was hiding from them in the bottom of our dragon boat.

That level of customer care is rare and truly made the night memorable. The cruise itself was smooth and enjoyable, with beautiful views, a fun atmosphere, and decent food and drinks. The staff was friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care about making sure everyone had a great experience. There were people celebrating birthdays--an 80th and a 50th. We passed under all the major bridges in New York City and saw many iconic buildings and towers. It is also where many NYC Dragon Boat teams moor their boats, which is how I got involved when I joined a team this year. The annual Dragon Boat Festival in Queens takes place at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, but many of the teams do their practices out in Flushing Bay. The reason I give the marina a low rating is because of the disgusting cesspool of pollution that is Flushing Bay! Not far from the 911 Memorial, the marina was very easy to find and had great views of the Jersey shoreline. Captain Dave is a native to the area, so he knows virtually everything about this area. He pointed out landmarks and took us right up to the Statue of Liberty while telling us about Ellis Island and the other buildings in that area. The views from the boat were astounding, especially of the Manhattan skyline. Dave was really friendly and we had a great time laughing and taking photos with him. My sister and I had the BEST time on his sailboat, Tara, and we will definitely go back. HIGHLY recommend!

There is always something to do year round. In the winter months, most people decide to venture to the aquatic center/skate rink or the Al Oeter Rec center.
