I will say the public areas of the hotel appear clean and well maintained. It's somewhat uncommon for us to dine at a hotel restaurant without staying at the hotel as well. We however have stopped at Season's three different times now when there's been a snafu with going to another destination. We haven't been disappointed yet. We've had the Friday fish, Sunday broasted chicken and rounded it out with a ribeye to boot. Pleasantly surprised with each dinner. They each seemed to be a quality entree with decent flavorings. It is a restaurant within a hotel, so it's not super fancy. I note it as a worthy destination if you find yourself looking for a bite to eat and it's that time of day when other area restaurants might have too long of a wait.

The desk clerk was nice and polite, it's not her fault the place reeks of a run down house with a wet basement. She checked us in and tells us our room is on the second floor on the North side and we will want to drive around and park in back. What she failed to tell us was they have no elevator. So here is my husband trying to carry up a completely full large cooler with probably a case and a half of beverages and 20 pounds of ice, along with his duffel. and me with a brace on my foot/ankle carrying my bag, trying to make it up a flight of stairs in a hallway that is more like a sauna. We finally make it to our room, open the door and find it's not just the hallway that's a sauna, but the room too. First things first, where is the AC? Second, after being on the road over 4 hours, the bathroom. I walk in the bathroom to find a toilet that is so small and short that it looks like it was pulled out of a grade school. Then I notice a handicapped grab bar in the shower. Nice feature, right. But I have to ask, who puts a handicapped grab bar in a second floor hotel room that doesn't have an elevator so the handicapped can access the room? Where is the logic in that? Also there are no available sockets near the bed to plug in and change cell phones. We are in a room with 2 queen size beds and there is only one light source between the 2 beds to be shared by both beds. They advertise free Wi-Fi, but the signal is so weak my husband could not get a text message to go through to his brother on the first floor. So now after just 3 hours of sleep on a rock hard mattress, here I sit in the dark for over an hour now, at 3:30am, unable to breathe due to the mold and mildew in a hot room writing this review and looking for a different hotel to stay in hoping that the shower at least has good water pressure and wondering how this place is rated as one of the best hotels in the area. I don't know, maybe my standards are too high.

Since there isn't much competition for hotels in Shawano, the owner may feel complacency is good, but in this case, it's not. So, based on the filled hotel parking lot, the owner of the Boarders Inn & Suites by Cobblestone Hotels - Shawano is making a steady profit but still needs to care about the customer experience. When you enter the vestibule, you notice a weird odor, and then, as you enter the lobby, you'll smell the chlorine from the pool across from the service desk; from that point, you'll catch an odd scent throughout the hallways. It smelled like roast beef. So, let me confirm a review from Yelper Marie A. posted on 6/28/2016, "Upon checking in and arriving in our room, we could smell smoke a lot of cigarette smoke." It is still present after all these years, regardless of how hard the staff attempted to cover it up. I woke up the following day, and my eyes were itchy, red, burning, crusted shut, and had a clear, watery discharge. My throat was irritated, and I started wheezing as I breathed; it cleared up after we left the hotel. Next, another Yelper posted on 10/23/2016, "Friendly staff. Quiet. Very clean. But time for upgrades in public areas as carpets are worn and dirty. The room was okay. Clean. Carpets are very worn and stained. Wallpaper coming apart in shower. Hotel in need of a fresh new look." Again, the staff was excellent, and everything mentioned above is factual, even after eight years--zero effort in upgrades. In addition to those mentioned above, I encountered a heavily stained sofa and chair. The chair had significant tear marks on the arms. Put it this way: the chair was so bad that I've thrown out better furniture in the past. The carpet in the elevator is covering old, worn-out carpet. The dresser and end tables were heavily scratched down to bare wood. Furthermore, if you look at the photos on Yelp dating back to May 2015, very little has changed with the furniture. Again, with the complacency. I took a black light to the bed and chairs and did not encounter bed bugs but saw a deceased wandering weevil by the tub. While I want to avoid getting sidetracked, these flashlights can range in price from $10 to $50, depending on their quality and features. They're a good investment if you travel. Okay, back on topic, I've been looking for another moderately priced, budget midscale hotel that can compete with Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, and Drury Inn. Well, it's painfully apparent that Boarders Inn & Suites by Cobblestone Hotels isn't that chain. Finally, there is a search engine that everyone is familiar with, and the ratings are significantly high for this location, but trust Yelp to guide you with facts, not fiction. Please see my photos for further details.

They were modern and we'll kept. Those were some of the positives. We were double booked with another family, so we were bumped from the cabin with the washer and dryer.... Not the end of the world but when you have small children and plan on a washer and dryer being present it is difficult. The resort advertises WiFi, but not a single person in our group picked up the signal or was able to use it. This was not fixed by the owner during our stay. It was not a big deal, but when trying to search for dinner ideas ect, we had little reception and no WiFi to help. The beach was not cleaned of dead fish and seaweed until Wed /Thursday. Again, not the end of the world but when you have a busy 2 year old, it is not fun constantly having to direct him around the seaweed and dead fish. It was slightly odd how the owner came and sat/monitored us packing up at 7:30/8am when check out is 9am. It was just different I guess. Not bad but not great. We rented pontoon boats from the owner, but he had taken out the lights so we could not use them at night on the lake. We highly recommend not renting the boats from the owner if you want to be legally on the boat at sunrise /sunset. Overall we had a nice family trip but will not be staying here again due to the changes from what was advertised (WiFi /laundry /pontoon rental -no night restrictions listed)
