I can't say much about the skiing itself, but our group of friends had an absolutely amazing time at the tubing area. It was well organized and a lot of fun for everyone. We also rented an Airbnb with an indoor heated pool just down the street in Spring Grove, which made the the weekend amazing. We went tubing first and then fun in the pool afterward. This review is only for the tubing portion of Wilmot. For a relatively flat geography, Wilmot is able to provide a decent tubing experience. There are several adjacent, straight runs (apparently 22, but not all utilized on our warm February day) which provide a decent and safe velocity for young and old alike. There's a conveyor/escalator type of tow that allows tubers to stand and hold their tube to get up the hill. Here's the downside... $55 for 2 hours is steep! Especially for the lack of variety in slope. The food and souvenirs are also way overpriced and it feels unreasonable for a large family to pay to go tubing here. Based on the prices online, it would be better to get a lift ticket and ski rental and have the day to ski, than to pay for 2 hours of tubing. I still recommend Wilmot for the experience. For my neighbors in the Chicago suburbs, it is a nice change of pace for a winter activity. read more

With the unusually warm weather this year, my husband and I were yearning for some winter fun. We had plans to see Ice Castles but they shut down early because the weather wasn't cooperating. As always, we had a back up plan. Ben for years pushed for a ski trip and this year I caved. Ben is self taught and skied some decades ago in high school. I had none whatsoever so we opted to do individual private lessons. We scheduled our session online and rented out equipment. I would recommend coming in at least a 1/2 hour early prior to your session start to get your gear. When renting, what you get are your skis, ski boots, poles and helmet. Nothing more. All the other ski gear necessary (ski gloves, goggles, base layers and snow pants) are on you to bring so keep that in mind if it's your first time. I think the only part that was most confusing to us was how to pick up our rental gear. The rental shop is just a floor below Walt's Tavern and when you check in, you give them your name. They then provide you with a sheet of paper with your size for all their equipment which honestly is not the easiest to read. From there you will have to get your boots on your own. (Note the boots come in full sizes only. I sized up). Strap yourself in and then return to the desk to get your skis. Ski poles are recieved outside the shop to the right in wooden crates where you have to pick them out yourself. Lockers are available for rent and located in the far end of the rent shop next to the boots. Lockers are provided in the following sizes: Standard (Small - and can fit gear for 1 person) @ $10 Large (Medium - fits 2) @ $12 and Jumbo (Large- fits gear for 3 max) @ $19 We opted for the medium sized locker and it was plenty for us to hold our personals. Once suited up, I had to admit I was nervous going in but our ski instructor John Stringer, did a great job making sure we got the basics. My biggest challenges were gaining my balance and sidestepping uphill on skis. I had to get comfortable angling the side of my skis against and up the hill to prevent from sliding backwards which happened a few times. Note: Falling is expected and part of the process. When your new to their ski school, lessons are focused on getting technique down. Once that was solidified, I was able to go down the bunny hill a few times on my own after John had me do a side to side run with him focusing on turns. What at first seemed daunting was fun and exhilarating once you get the hang of it. We spent a good 4 hours there and it's guaranteed you will work up a sweat! Experienced skiers mentioned the routes are too short which is understandable. Granted it's not Silverton or Park City but if you're new and learning how to navigate the hills, it's a good spot. I've been told the snow quality here is great. The snow was good the day we went however the night before there was an ice storm and the grounds were slippery making our first time far more challenging! Since Vail acquired this resort there have been several upgrades to the snow machines and ski lifts. All in all, they did an excellent job with the refresh. We had a memorable time and I'm already looking forward to next season! read more

That's nice and all, but it's not Colorado, by any stretch of the imagination, so prices should be commensurate with a very small resort with a few tiny hills in the Midwest. Florida gal here who never saw snow until college. My husband is from Texas, but spent much of his childhood skiing in beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho. I attempted to pick up skiing in my 30s and while I love the bunny hills, it's a scary sport to learn as an adult. And so I've really wanted to teach my kids to ski when they don't have quite as far to fall. After a few years skiing in Sun Valley my daughter caught the skiing bug and wants to do it every chance she gets. Her younger brother wasn't quite as comfortable on skis. And with the hopes that we make it out to Sun Valley in a few weeks for spring break I wanted to get them a bunch of lessons at Wilmot over the winter. It turns out skiing was the perfect pandemic sport this winter, especially when it came down to privates lessons and renting our ski gear at Williams in highland park ahead of time so that we never really had to go inside. Since my kids are currently in afternoon hybrid school thanks to the pandemic, I booked a bunch of morning lessons and then a bunch of longer lessons on the weekends. Due to the pandemic I felt most comfortable booking privates, which were a fortunate, but well worth it based on the amazing experience they had each time. The lessons also filled quickly, but the best thing I did was just book up January-March back in December...and then cancel whenever the weather didn't look like it was cooperating. Wilmot makes it super easy to cancel (via email) 48 hours ahead of time. Weekends at Wilmot are crazy so I highly recommend booking if the kids have a day off of school. The kids had the mountain to themselves during their morning lessons and got to ride the chair lift sooo many times. I also think it's best to get your rental gear ahead of time (even when not in a pandemic) since I heard of craziness like 2 hour wait for skis. It was nice showing up right before the lesson and being ready to go! We had a variety of instructors and everyone was phenomenal. A big shout out to Don, Heidi & Chip who were absolutely fantastic. My daughter loves skiing even more than ever (if possible) and my son is now a huge fan as well. He loves it so much that he's even writing a report on skiing for his class at school. While i kept my son in lessons the entire time, my daughter skied with my husband during a few weekends. And while Wilmot runs are boring for expert skiers like my husband it really is perfect for kids (or adults) learning. We decided due to the slushy snow thanks to warmer temps that today would be our last day and my daughter was beyond excited to try a black diamond run. That black diamond run is more like a blue in Sun Valley, but I think she's more prepared that ever for our spring break ski trip. And most importantly both kids have had so much fun! read more

To start off Wilmot Mountain is a great ski resort for beginners and people who know how to ski. It's a very simplistic and small ski resort and the snow quality is great! Even though Wilmot is small and simple it has great snow quality and it's a place to have fun with friends and family. Overall I think Wilmot Mountain is a great place to go with your family and friends to have fun and ski. Note: The reason I would rate Wilmot 4 stars and a place like Cascade Mountain 3 stars is because many times I've been to Cascade and the snow quality was terrific, and every time I've been to Wilmot it has been great. read more

Two of our families planned a trip to Wilmot today. I used six of my epic buddy passes and paid for 5 rentals. I tried to use my Epic Mountain Rewards for the rentals but the lady at the window said it was only good for one rental. I searched all over epicpass.com and wilmotmountain.com and I read all the Terms & Conditions and that is not listed anywhere. After about two runs the kiddos were ready for lunch. We went back to the parking lot and I set up my awning, propane fire pit, camp stove, and Peppa Pig for the kids to watch. Between all of us we had kids between the ages of 3-10 years old. We wanted to be "socially distant" from others so we decided to do our own thing in the parking lot. A gentleman wearing a black Wilmot uniform, driving a white sportsman van with Colorado plates (see photo) approached us not wearing a mask and said that we couldn't have a fire pit and we had to put it out and that tailgating is not allowed because they are trying to avoid gatherings. It ruined our family trip and the kids were upset because they couldn't roast marshmallows. We packed up and left. Everyone is aware of what's going on with the Pandemic and the last thing anyone wants to have is any type of gathering. We are two lifelong family friends just trying to enjoy a day at Wilmot Mountain. If he was so concerned about us he should observe the tables outside of Walt Tavern that had several people at them not wearing masks as well as at the lift lines. When we arrived at home I searched all over wilmotmontain.com and read through the info on the red banner that reads "OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY" and "No Tailgating" is not listed. The fire pit I have is the Camp Chef Compact Fire Ring, Smokeless propane-fueled flame. It is actually approved by several National Parks and Counties that are in high risk of fires because it is propane and it also serves as a stove. I have been to Wilmot about 5 times over the past two weeks and have had parking attendants hang out while I had the fire pit on and no one ever said anything to me about it or tailgating. The first paragraph in the Wilmot Mountain section Our Story reads "Since 1938, Wilmot Mountain has enchanted families as one of the Midwest's premier Winter destinations for snowsport activities. Just a short drive away from Chicago and Milwaukee, they have made skiing, snowboarding, and tubing an easy, accessible, affordable and fun trip for the whole family." I haven't been to Wilmot in a couple decades, so it was nice to get back on the slopes! This is a beginner ski resort, but it's relatively close to Chicago so worth the trip out. Lift tickets and rentals can be purchased online which is very convenient, there's no longer a need for those ugly adhesive lift tickets since they now scan your lift cards using RFID. The slopes were in great condition and the rental equipment was well maintained. The only issue was that they ran out of adult sized poles, so we were left with a children's set. I was worried to go to this mountain after reading previous reviews, but my group and I ended up having a great time! Keep in mind that this is a small mountain that draws a big crowd. We booked our lift tickets and rentals online a couple of weeks in advance. We visited on a Saturday in February and it didn't seem like they were sold out for the day since I saw people in the ticket line well after 1pm. Regardless, buying our tickets and rentals beforehand made for a smoother check-in process. We arrived 30 minutes before the lifts opened and I HIGHLY suggest arriving as early as possible. Obviously the later you show up the less rental gear available. We also made a reservation for lunch since we read reviews that the wait without one could be over an hour. For the actual mountain - as I mentioned earlier, it is on the smaller side so the runs are short. That being said, the runs were still fun and there were a nice variety. I attempted to call them 5 times since then, but with no success. I realized they might just don't want to answer my call, so I called from a different number. This time they pick up the phone immediately... Katty, the staff answered the phone call, and told me that Sam, her manager, asked her not to answer my call. Five stars goes to instructor David K. on being such an wonderful instructor. I had never gone skiing before and my friend and I decided to scale Wilmot mountain and try out best at the slopes. She opted for lessons so I decided to join her. Our experience was a zero. David was our instructor and taught us how to ski with just boots on, then with one ski, and finally with both. He taught us the proper safety methods of how to fall and to make sure that we knew how to stop. He was patient, funny, and reminiscent of a proud dad trying to teach his kids how to bike. Except in this case, ski. By the end of the afternoon, my friend and I had gone on the lift by ourselves and we were able to confidently ski down the slopes. I highly recommend David K. if you could get him as an instructor because he made us laugh and made skiing fun. In fact, my friend ended up spending another whole day on the mountain (Wilmot closes in about a week) and I think she'll black diamond ready by next time ;) But seriously, I'm so glad I was able to check this off my bucket list. Wilmot has plenty of parking, a ski lodge and ski rentals. They also sell super expensive, very nice ski gloves which I forgot (thanks to the BF for getting me a pair). Although this area is pretty flat, there's a few things Wilmot has going for it. First, it's very drivable from Chicago, about an hour and a half or less. Second, it's beginner friendly -- the greens are not a huge jump from the training slopes like some larger ski resorts. However, it's usually crowded and the runs are short (1 minute ish). I am not an avid skier but enjoy an occasionally snow day with family and friends. We came up here for the weekend and brought a bunch of kids who wanted to learn how to ski. The lessons were reasonable for newbies and they limited 5 students per instructor, there are two sessions that was broken up as AM and PM slots. Of course the entire day is worth it for the kids and that would give the parents a break and enjoy the slopes and the sights of this mountain. We ended up renting the gear and did not venture up the top and only went up the 100 ft. I stayed mostly in the cafe area and watching other avid skiers ride up and down the mountain. There are plenty of free parking and only 40 minutes from the City of Chicago. Highly recommend coming here. read more

Look, I've been snowboarding all of two times, INCLUDING the visit I'm now reviewing. And for me, Wilmot is just right. I still had my lift ticket from last year, so reloading it online was a breeze. It made me feel powerful, respected, like I was dropping mad dollars at Dave & Busters so the system KNEW me. It also was great knowing that they were limiting ticket sales and I could guarantee my place on the slopes without driving all the way there first. And on the subject of those slopes, they were great. Again, I'm a 2-time snowboarder who learned from YouTube and his girlfriend, so I'm nobody's Johnny Tsunami, but there is more than enough action to spend the whole day going up and down. And more to be scared of even attempting. Both times I've gone have been during the week, and I've arrived within the first hour of opening, but I've never had issues waiting in lift lines, pre-covid or during. So... try to go during the week, if you can swing it. Rentals were also easy last year and this year, pre and during covid times. The number of maskless faces was about equal with the number of helmetless heads, so people are making smart decisions out there, which is saying something for southern Wisconsin. I JEST, I jest, all in good fun. One last note: while riding a lift, I struggled to remember some of the complaints I'd seen in reviews I'd read before visiting (that'll happen when you're riding clear into blue skies, you struggle to think of anything else). And at some point I got it in my head that someone had compared the run times to the time spent ON the lifts (instead of IN the lift lines, which barely exist). If I had to review Wilmot within my first hour of being there, this review would be very different. My boyfriend and I purchased our passes and ski lessons online a week or so in advance and arrived to the resort with ample time to figure everything out that we needed (where to check in for lessons, get or rentals, etc.) As we walked into the first building that held their cafeteria, we approached an employee to ask where we needed to go for our rentals, who then replied "I don't know," and walked away. After finally finding the check-in for adult lessons, one of our passes got misplaced, but thankfully we had the receipt and after a lot of confusion, the pass was found. The majority of the employees, whether they were teenagers or adults, did not seem very friendly or happy to help in any way. The lesson was worth it, but had potential to be better due to the instructor. Now, I want to give my reason for this four star review after all of my negative remarks... once the lesson was over and we didn't really have to deal with the employees, we had a wonderful time. Keep in mind this resort isn't the most beautiful or unique, but for a beginner like myself, it was a great place to learn and gain some experience on skis! My boyfriend, who has skied quite a few times before, agreed with this as being a nice place to learn or for a fun day trip that's not too far from home. Midday we took a break and ate in the restaurant/bar, which was a nice experience and a good time to get a few drinks in before heading back out! Once 3/4 o'clock hit, the place really cleared out. We were making it down the hill and hopping right on the lift. Final thoughts: if you can see beyond the attitudes of some of the employees, you're due to have an excellent time. It was my first visit and I will say that staff members made it easy to navigate. If you're planning on a group trip, I would recommend urging all group members to arrive together, as one of the guest services employees initially gave us a hard time about admitting such a large group by arrival time. Also, please factor in that the entire cafeteria is restricted to vaccinated guest only. Additionally, you need a reservation for a table in the cafeteria so it was quite a wait before we were able to get food and be seated. Lastly, the resort ran out of sticks so if you arrive later in the day, be prepared to wait on someone to return theirs or simply bring your own. I purchased tickets for the tubing online one month in advance. I accidentally went to the ski side, the clerk was very kind and gave me directions to go to the other side for tubing, there was no line to reach the counter on the ticket purchase ski side. She did give me wrong info however, said that my tickets were for ski rental and also said she didn't think the tubing side was open that day. The parking lot on the ski side was almost full. The tubing side which is a few blocks away, was much less congested. I walked right up to the counter and was greeted by a nice worker. We were 20mins late for our reservation since we went to the ski side, we explained that to the worker and she extended our time. You book on two hour increments which helps w crowd control. There were ample male staffs who were very friendly. Surplus tubes and multiple lanes. One worker said the snow was fake and another said it was real. The music was very diverse and high energetic. The conveyor can be unsafe if you have any balance issues. The slopes are steep enough for a thrill each run. I was able to get in 10 rounds in 2 hrs. You cannot reach anyone by phone so be aware, the auto message says send an email. Highly recommend to book In advance bc the tubing was sold out at the door. The tubing side is primarily children but of course adults are welcomed. No rental equipment needed. A very nice souvenir shop w personable worker inside. Clean bathrooms. The parking lot was pretty muddy. I'd definitely return! read more

Tubing at Wilmont is fun for the whole family. Even when there was no snow to be elsewhere the facilities snow making machines do a great job keeping the tubing hill in great condition. They have several side-by-side tracks so you can have fun racing as a group or linking tubes together to go down as a unit. Once at the bottom of the hill they have a moving walk-way to transport you back to the top. Great winter activity for kids and/or adults. The ski hill they offer is a great place to learn locally. The ski area also currently has many runs open due to their snow making ability. The runs are short and lines are long. But you have to start somewhere. Both tubing and skiing are open during they day and evening. Each area has a lodge that sells food and drinks. And TVs had football on for those who would prefer to stay indoors. read more

First time here since Epic took over. What a cluster to get rentals and sign-in for lessons. We were told to show up at one building and had to walk 3 different ones before getting to the right building. We wasted a half hour going back and forth to the buildings trying to get settled for our lesson. Total CLUSTER. Another thing, they have everything closed down. The only way to EAT inside is if you have a vax card. WHAT?? People are crammed in buildings getting rentals and in line to get on the slopes but God forbid should anyone who is not vaccinated be able to sit down and eat a meal. UNREAL. We had to eat from a food truck. The girl monitoring the vax cards to EAT was so rude too. Treated us like the devil for not being vaxed. I think that it's hilarious that you can stay in a line jammed with 100 people breathing down each others necks for rentals, you can stay in the warming lodge RIGHT NEXT to the cafeteria, yet you can't buy food if you're not vaccinated. Good ski spot close to Chicago. -Quick (about hour) drive from downtown Chicago. -Ski runs are short, but fun and interesting. There are some good areas for jumps and tricks as well. -Rental equipment was a bit old and could use an update. The rental process is also kind of weird. They just tell you to pick out your own boots and you leave them when you're done--nobody confirms that they're returned. -The food at the cafeteria was surprisingly good--pizza was delicious. -There are a couple bars and they had good live music while we were there. -All the staff were friendly. This is a review for the restaurant at Wilmot, Walt''s Tavern. We had a pretty terrible experience. The waiter was one of the worst I've ever had. He couldn't remember who ordered what. I got a lecture and a sigh from him about how difficult it is to split checks (which I requested BEFORE we ordered food). We waited an excessively long time for our food and it was not very busy. Unfortunately I paId $16 for pulled pork Mac and cheese that had been sitting out for a long time (had formed a hardened film on the top). The meat was very good but the noodles were squishy and the cheese was very clearly velveeta. My husband had the chicken and waffles and he enjoyed that but his Tater tots were cold. My friends had soggy nachos-the chips were way too thin and also came with the establishment staple, velveeta cheese. I would give this maybe another chance being that we ski at wilmot a decent amount but I would insist on a different waiter and avoid anything with cheese sauce on it! read more

Spent $13mil on renovations and the place went downhill(pun but true). They opened prior to the staff being ready. The staff was very nice and apologetic for the whole process being ridiculously broken. The staff truly felt bad for the customers which is why they got 2 stars instead of 1. I reserved lessons and lift tickets online to help speed up the process. It didn't help and was a waste of time. I got there to pick up the new lift cards and the printer was broken. Wasted 30 minutes there with a line full of other customers waiting for the same thing. I got in a different line and they couldn't figure out how to make a 4 year old pass card and wasted another 15 minutes there. Then the line for rental gear was the most idiotic thing I have ever seen. People were waiting up to 2 hours. I arrived at 930 which I realized was cutting the 10am lesson too close but we were 1/2 hour late to my daughters 11am private lesson. My kids were tired from the lines prior to even getting to ski. I ended up paying for rentals twice because they couldn't figure out to tell me that I had to go the ski school to pick up the vouchers. In the end, the staff was super nice. You usually work at a place like this because you love it and they obviously do. People are not going to go back. Is the issue. I could have drove another 1 1/2 hours to devils head and skied quicker. The new management has failed its customers and its employees. read more

I'm not sure why Wilmot is getting so many negative reviews. For being a ski resort in the midwest, I think these guys do a pretty darn good job. I have been to Wilmot a handful of times. This past weekend was my first after their $13 million renovation. Amongst their changes, the most noticeable were the new snow making equipment and lifts, and changes in the cafeteria area. The food was pretty good and the addition of cups near the water fountains was great. I liked not having to carry a water bottle with me. The whole process, from reserving the lift tickets online to dropping off our rentals was a breeze. The employees were polite and helpful. The variety of runs was great for what seems to be beginner/intermediate riders. My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun and we will certainly be returning here to snowboard again! Only thing I'd like to see an improvement on is the addition of names at the runs. They've got the color coded signs depicting the level of difficulty, but it would be nice to have the run names show in accordance with the trail maps. read more

0 stars. The rate they charge to ski on a dump is robbery. Lines everywhere. Rental line is where souls go to die (impossibly slow). Lift lines are awful too. Never coming back. read more

Overcrowded. Insufficient staff for the volume of people they let in. 1.5 hour line for rentals. Not well thought out. Staff are stressed. Runs are shorter than the wait for the lift. read more

The tubing was pretty awesome even for a couple in their mid twenties! Make sure you go at the hour since you get tags that show full hour only. 2 hours is more than enough! Don't get longer than that! I believe we went 10 times in that 2 hour period. read more

We came to Wilmont for snow tubing in early March. It was great and we definitely plan to come back next year. We were here with a bunch of adults and 3 kids. I think the adults may have had more fun then the kids. The weather was perfect, it had finally gotten above 40 and was sunny, but there was still plenty of snow. At first people were a little scared, but after the first run no one was scared anymore. It is very hard to flip over, fall out/off, spin around unless you are trying to. There are a bunch of lanes, so we never had to wait very long. I thought 2 hours was a great amount of time to be out here. We were all tired and hungry after that. It's not a bad drive up from Chicago, Google maps was extremely accurate with directions and time. We pulled right in to the parking lot with no problems. They have decent bathroom, a snack bar, and a bar. read more
