Everything was well-planned with plenty of time to do what was scheduled and more. The bus stopped once on the way into the city and once on the way back, for breakfast and dinner. They offer a huge variety of tours as well as other services. While I probably wouldn't do a NYC tour again, I'll definitely look into their others.

Sydney was knowledgeable and poised and kept the boys engaged. At the end of the presentation, each boy got a short ride on the sled. It was easily one of the coolest events of the year. If you're looking for a group activity or enrichment event, don't hesitate. After that first visit, both my kids begged to visit the dogs in Central MA to experience a full dog sled adventure. We signed up for the 5-mile ride. If you choose to visit Drift Away, *do* confirm your meeting location. We showed up at the address on the website to find no one there. Because of the confusion with the locations, Sydney graciously offered to include a mini-mushing experience in addition to the sled ride, so each of us got to mush solo for a short distance with a small team of dogs--a very cool feeling to be by yourself on a sled with the dogs. The 5-mile ride consisted of one of Drift Away's mushers, Tessa, driving our sled while the kids and I rode in the seat and standing in mushing position. Being the old lady that I am, I thought I would enjoy sitting more, but it was absolutely exhilarating to stand and imagine the experience of mushing myself. I could easily imagine how one could get hooked. You really gain an appreciation of the dogs, their intelligence, and their capacity. Rutland State Park, where we took our ride, was beautiful and peaceful. I will admit to booking this adventure mostly at the kids' behest, but I thoroughly enjoyed it myself. Great for families and adults. Before and after the ride, we got to interact with the dogs and mushers. Sydney, Kiara, and Tessa are fantastic young women who clearly know their facts and love their dogs. The kids and I helped harness the dogs before the ride and feed the dogs after the ride, all while hearing stories of each of the dogs and learning bits of their personalities. Beyond the experience of the mushing and sled ride, we were very impressed with these entrepreneurial young women who started with an interest in dog sledding when they were just 10 years old, pursued their passion, and developed this women-run business to support the dogs. It was amazing experience and a pleasure to support such a dedicated and hard-working team.

In messaging Hocus Pocus Tours with a couple questions about the tour and travel to and from Salem, the owner Susan replied immediately and suggested that I call her. This led to a one hour phone conversation where Susan was so gracious with her time, knowledge, and suggestions, not just about how to make the most of the tour, but how to appreciate a day in Salem. I can see why those who had the opportunity to take the in-person tour with Susan really enjoyed it. Covid changed the business model and Hocus Pocus now offers a self-guided tour by purchasing one of two tour apps. I opted for the $19.99 grand tour and it was well worth it. It has 37 points of interest. The app is user friendly and well designed. It provides a map of all stops, tracks where you are, and guides you to the next stop that you select on the tour. When you get to your stop, you can confirm you're at the right spot by comparing a photo of the site with what you see. Then you click on a 2-3 minute audio recording that provides a great snapshot of the significance of the site. As Susan had pointed out to me, there is much more to Salem than the historic witchcraft trials. It includes author Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables, America's oldest candy company, and other interesting sites. Of everything I visited, I experienced a very deep emotional connection with the 1692 Witchcraft Memorial with 20 stones dedicated to each of the victims of the witchcraft trial. The tour includes brief descriptions of some of the victims including those written about in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. If you plan to visit Salem, I highly recommend this tour. All sites can be visited on the outside and some on the inside at no charge. Some sites, such as The House of Seven Gables, charge separate admission fees. If you want to travel to Salem and don't have a car, the ferry from Boston offers a nice, scenic, and entertaining 50 minute ride. The commuter trains run more frequently and can come in handy if the ferry schedule coming or going doesn't meet your needs. There are plenty of good places to dine at to break up the tour. We had lunch at FINZ and really enjoyed it (I'll post separately about that).

We hoped to attend campaign events throughout the state. And we could not have done it without Mel and Tye Tours! Mel was willing to drive our group to all corners of the state at odd times of the day, sometimes adjusting his personal schedule. He always kept the drives interesting with fascinating trivia about New Hampshire and New England in general. He was a sweet man who got to know the students and offered them candy along the ride. On one instance, Mel went above and beyond anything I could have expected. A student became ill at an event and had to be transported to the hospital. Mel drove the rest of the group from Concord back to Manchester, then returned to Concord to wait with me in the ER while my student was treated. He then drove us all back to Manchester, accepting no additional money for the extra 4 hours of work. Mel is not just good at his job; more importantly, he is a good man. Before arriving in Salem I thought it was a small town. Salem is a much larger town located just north of Boston. The tour covered about 1 1/2 miles and the walk was easy.
