(I'll preface this with the explanation that I've had very nice dealings with the sales department in doing test drives before this rip-off). We were experiencing a rough ride in our 2001 Toyota Prius, so we dropped it off at the Wilson service department for a check. I'd just moved to Ames from Iowa City, where I went to the Iowa City Toyota dealership for service regularly and was always pleased with their mechanical and customer service performance. In fact, Iowa City Toyota gave us an honest assessment of our car's worth and discussed a few components of our car that were starting to break down. They recommended that those repairs (which weren't safety issues) were not worth it, given the age and mileage on our old Prius. So, I walked in with baseline of trust for Toyota dealerships that has flown out the window with Wilson. Even though we told the service department to check only the shocks/struts, they checked the entire vehicle and re-diagnosed issues we had already told them about. They charged us over $150 for checking the whole car. Then, the ridiculous part. They told us that the 2001 didn't have the cheaper shocks and struts that come pre-assembled (that's fine) and that the shocks/struts/rubber connectors were shot on all four wheels. Wilson service quoted a repair cost for us at over $3,000. The service agent explained this very quickly and asked when we wanted to schedule the repair. I don't know if he pegged us for a couple of pushover college students, but we are young professionals with enough gumption to ask whether driving without the repairs would be a safety issue. He tried to backtrack and convince us to get the repair, so I asked again. He reluctantly said no, and we left. Our plan was to get a second opinion, which my in-laws did at a trusted mechanic in their smaller northeast Iowa town. He quoted them $461 dollars for the repair and said the back wheels were in fine condition. I expected Wilson to charge slightly more than an independent shop, but I was flabbergasted!! Wilson won't be getting any more of our service business. Ever. read more

If you want the biggest headache in the world buy a car or deal with them. They will tell you one thing and do another. I have never had so much trouble with one place in my life. Came to change my oil. Sat in the waiting room and helped my self to a coffee that is on display for free for waiting customers. I took a sip and it was old and cold and old. I asked the clerk kindly if they would be making fresh coffee. her answer. I do not know !!! as she sat there doing nothing. All I know is that they do NOT love their customers. read more

Wilson Toyota is simply the best car dealer I have dealt with in my life (I have bought lots of cars from different dealers). Their service is exceptionally good. They are scrupulously honest, never overcharge, never do service that is not needed, and are always on time and do the job right the first time. Their sales department is also excellent. I recently bought Highlander form them- they were very helpful and accommodating-plus I got a great price, much lower than what Edmunds website said I should expect to get. They sold me a highlander that turned out to have $10,000 worth of repairs needed. No exaggerating. $10,000. After I had already spent $1000 to replace all 4 shocks. I found this out when I took it into THEIR shop to have them replace the light on the license plate because the screws were so stripped and rusted on I couldn't turn them at all. Essentially they sold me a car that wasn't even legal to drive on the road because a couple brake lights were out also but I was able to change those. I called the salesman that sold me the car, Mark Wacker, and tried to get them to help me out in any way since the repairs were basically the price of a new car. They wouldn't even give me half of what I paid for a trade in. When I bought the car, paid in full with cash, less than a month before. They also wouldn't budge on the price of the Camry I was wanting to buy instead. They claim they didn't know about all these expensive repairs but I doubt that. I also had to pay $300 for them to change the light bulb and do an inspection they should have done before they put the car for sale. They had my car for an entire week, Friday to Friday, to essentially replace a light bulb. Dealers and salesmen lie. I went to a different dealer, Honda, and they worked with me and gave me a great deal on my accord I have now. read more

Wolves in sheep's clothing. This dealership will pretend to be so great, but will stab you in the back. Purchased a traded in fleet vehicle, a RAV 4, for top dollar I found out later. After 2 years, no radio, navigation, Bluetooth, the motherboard is fried. The Technician states it is a common problem and in fact he was hired to work on bad Toyota electronics full time. Price tag , $1,100 to replace. I complain to the service manager who treats me like an out of line female when I challenge him on his statement that they just don't see this much. And my favorite cop out "I am just the service manager". I was also out of line to be upset about "a radio" No one seems to actually represent Wilson Toyota at this dealership. Went to a reputable electronics repair place, around for decades, who will replace for $500. That's right, 110% less than Wilson Toyota. One more thing, the service tech told us that it would take 2 hours of labor to remove the motherboard, the reputable technician had it on his work bench in 5 minutes. Scoundrels. read more

I was visiting Ames with my parents on my dad's 81st birthday. We had stopped at the Union on campus. When we got back to the car, it wouldn't start. Nothing worked. This was so weird because it had been working fine before. I didn't really know who to call or what to do, finally thought to see if there was a Toyota dealer. I got connected to Josh in the service dept. who was SO helpful. Right away he thought it was the battery. He sent someone out for a jump start, then followed me as I drove to the dealership. They were able to put in a new battery right away. I was thinking it would be expensive at the dealer, but it wasn't. Everyone was very nice and helpful and so fast. Made the potentially bad experience as smooth as it could be. I was extremely pleased. read more

Brad is very helpful! Such a nice guy! He will do ANYTHING he can to get you what you are looking for! He is willing to go above and beyond(which is an understatement) for his customers and takes very good care of them! HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking for a new vehicle! He did everything he could to get my boyfriend and I into EXACTLY what we were looking for in our price range! He originally told us we could pick up the car Thursday or Friday but when he found out my birthday was Tuesday, he made sure he had our vehicle ready to go for us on Tuesday so we could pick it up for my birthday! That was awesome! He even put a big red bow on the hood of the vehicle and rolled out the red carpet for us! Wilson is the worst. It makes me sick to see television ad using children to make them seem like nice warm people. I asked if they would cover towing for my car parked just off duff since it turned over fine but wouldn't start. They said if the problem is covered under warranty it would be. They called later that day and said the car was low on oil by 3 quarts and that's all the problem is. Do I want to change the oil or just add oil. I told them to add oil. When I went to pick up the car I was shocked to have a bill over 200. The towing was over 100, there was an inspection fee and over 5 bucks per quart of oil. To top it off the car was dusty with fresh bird dropping on it. I question how the car wouldn't start if low on oil. They said car does that to protect engine. Ok, so how did it get low? The v6 engine is known to use oil. So I called the towing company and they said a flatbed tow is 70 bucks anywhere in ames. I called Wilson to get a partial refund, they said he would talk to manager and call me back. I called again when no call back and they hung up on me. So I complain to manufacturer. They said they got the dealer to call me back. The manufacturer called me two days later to ensure I was satisfied. Advised still no call back, they said there is nothing more they can do to help me. So I filed a BBb complaint. Finally they responded that stating due to a billing error they would refund 20 some dollars. This place will only be nice until they get your money. Plan on no service after the sale, high prices, and sloppy work and they will meet that expectation. Oh, and I also get annoyed their shuttle service drives slow in the fast lane. It not only annoys me but reminds me how much I don't like this business. read more
