Atrocious. Incredibly weak and inconsistent medical oversight leads to haphazard care including medicines administered, food safety, therapy (or lack thereof). Patients crying to be transported simply from their chair into bed for 2 hours. Not an exaggeration. Witnessed multiple times. While there are exceptions, staff can be very rude, defensive, flippant, deflecting. US News quality reviews very inaccurate & misleading from what we've witnessed. Terrible. If this is one of the better skilled nursing and rehab hospitals in the greater Boston area, we're in a very sad state read more

Heartbreaking Experience I honestly wouldn't recommend this Rehab to anyone. The staff here move incredibly slow and seem overwhelmed all the time. Most of the nurses are retired and just don't have the energy or attentiveness that patients need. There are no staff doctors, only nurse practitioners, and it feels like there's no real leadership or plan in place for anything. There's no protocol for emergencies -- during a fire alarm, everyone looked confused about what to do. We also had two power outages in one week, and instead of fixing the issue or using proper backup power, they handed out battery-operated LED lights to patients. It was honestly shocking.Language barrier is an issue especially when reciting the menu options The worst part is how long it takes to get help. I've seen patients left sitting in their own feces for up to 40 minutes before anyone came. No one deserves that. It breaks my heart to see people treated this way when they're supposed to be cared for and respected in their later years. This place seriously needs to be inspected and held accountable. Families deserve better, and so do the people living here. read more

Worst experience! My loved one came home with a MRSA UTI, nightmares and recently found out a mini stroke, we asked to have a new eye issue checked we noticed upon arrival one day it was bothersome and didn't look right, asked multiple times but it wasn't a priority then told it was ok per an NP. Confirmed via MRI and a neurologist apt. Left sitting on soiled bed and wet so the UTI shouldn't be a surprise but the MRSA was! I understand staff gets busy and things come up with other patients but the issues that the patient left with are unacceptable. Some of the nurses were good and the physical therapist - never again will I allow anyone I care about to step foot in this place! read more

My Mom is a new resident at Winchester Nursing & Rehab. My family and I are so grateful to find such an incredible facility. The nursing staff is so nice. Every person has been caring, compassionate and understanding. In fact, everyone that we have encountered from the front desk to the kitchen to the management team have been incredible as well. We couldn't be happier with the care our mother is getting. We truly feel like she is in the best hands and it is a joy to see her enjoying everything from the food to the daily activities to making new friends. AMAZING! My grandmother, 94, went here for a respite stay. She is very particular and set in her ways. It is not easy for her to ask for help or complain in a reasonable manner, she can be a little 'snoody,' and is usually huffing and puffing about something! Her stubborn and sneaky personality can be exhausting for others. She needs assistance for things as simple as buttoning her shirt, remembering where her glasses are, etc...her safety was becoming a bigger concern. At first, she was very hesitant to go to Winchester. She even tried to run away! Imagine this...she ended up staying an extra three weeks because she was thriving so well! I never imagined the phone calls from staff would be so positive! Our family was thrilled and surprised to hear that she was very social, joking with everyone, showing off about how high she could lift her leg....gaining a few pounds (normally weighs in at 102 lbs so nutrition is important)- She was in her glory. She claimed that they have the "best restaurant in town." (Honestly, I was jealous of her chicken parm dinner one night, it looked and smelled so delicious. I don't even like chicken...or parm.) She had two bad days in her total stay. (She has a moderate depression and anxiety that she has dealt with her whole life so bad days here and there are fairly normal for her.) It was during the first week- we were concerned that her positive experience would not be endured. However, nurse Karen was not working that day. The next day Karen came back to work and all was good! I need Karen in my life!!! I can't believe how how quickly my grandmother had accepted the nurses and how quickly or strong their friendship developed. Gram had one other bad day but just like anyone else might in six weeks away from home. We are so thankful to Karen and all the staff for allowing us to take a breath and relax for a minute, assured that gram was safe and happy. Change can be difficult for anyone, never mind a sometimes confused 94 year old who is switching environments suddenly. Winchester Nursing Center made the transition for Gram and my family so effortless and positive during such an already pressing time. They answered questions I didn't even know I had!! I felt supported. Her care was above what we even hoped for! Her mind and soul were cared for as well as her physical self. When visiting, I couldn't help but notice how many patients literally laughed out loud with other residents or with the nurses. The nurse knew each resident and connected with them on a personal level, which made my grandmother feel as if she was the most special person in there. She told us she was "receiving VIP treatment." Gram's behavior and attitude were clearly reflective of her positive experience. I guess maybe she's not so negative after all.... I was very impressed by the coordination of the staff (even though my expectations were high to begin with) and how efficiently they completed tasks and handled situations that arose. I loved the energy of the building. There are many reasons that we considered having Winchester be her permanent residence. We opted to take her home, but gram is looking forward to and excitedly asking when she can return to "sleepaway camp" and see "her new friends and new best friend Karen." LOL! IT FEELS SO GOOD TO FEEL SO GOOD! And It feels so good to not be exhausted, to have had an actual break without worrying and to trust 100% that she was in good hands, that I would be contacted promptly if needed, that I would be updated as needed. The time apart was much needed and rejuvenating for the whole family, especially gram! It was a tough and nerve wracking decision to send her to begin with, but I am honestly just mind-blown at how well the whole thing went. Still cannot believe it. What a relief to know that excellent and reliable help and support is near when needed. If you need a place to trust with your loved ones, Winchester Nursing Home was the best choice in Massachusetts for our family. The best part about this place was it felt like a warm, comfortable home of an old friend; not a "healthcare facility" or a "nursing home...where the old people go to die." read more

This place is terrible the staff is terrible they don't treat the patient how they are not supposed to be treated there take advantage if I was you I'll think it twice before putting them in here I worked there for six months and it was hell and they don't give you them the right treatment. read more

Don't trust the five star Medicare rating. This place is severely understaffed and threaten staff if they say anything to patients or families. I will regret for the rest of my life having to have my loved one stay here. There was a handful of very nice staff but the rest were just there to make a paycheck and go home. The NP is a disgrace. No idea what she is doing and did not check patients if she had other personal things she had to do. Therefore patient issues were left unchecked. Where are the doctor visits? They have ridiculous number of administrative staff but no hands on staff. Patients wait hours to be helped. The five star rating is false. Obviously they are fooling the system ... likely pulling staff from other facilities on days they are being inspected. Shame on them. Don't take on more patients if you do t have the staff. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place, and the bad review below actually confused me enough to wonder if they were reviewing the same place! My mother went into WNC in March with the intention of rehab. Due to extensive health problems which had nothing to do with the facility, my mother's health failed and she passed away there in May. I was too upset to write a review before now (4 months later) but I would be remiss if I didn't somehow publicly thank them. Think about that, I'm circling back 4 months later to write a review. Losing my mother was soul crushing. In the end, she was completely incapable of taking care of herself on ANY level. The aides were so unbelievably kind, patient, and supportive. My mother was s-l-o-w from parkinsons, like slower than you could ever imagine. She was never rushed when they spoon fed her. Their patience was unbelievable. In fact, the staff taught me to wait. Given enough time to answer a question, my mother would eventually answer - something I hadn't realized. The staffs' words were, "you need to wait her out." Because of that, I got to hear my mother joke with me for one last time - and I would have missed it simply because I had to give her literally minutes to answer. They cleaned her with dignity and care. Think bathroom, and that is not an easy job. Yet the staff that was physically cleaning her were smiling and joking around with one another in the hallways. I've been to places where the staff are all zombies because they hate their jobs. The staff at WNC actually LIKE each other, and the atmosphere is HAPPY. There was one day when it became very clear to me that my mother was not going to pull through. Suzanne happened to be the charge nurse that day, and thank God for that. She listened to me ask questions, spent a ton of time explaining things, and when I got so upset that I just lost it, she turned over her whole office to me to give me a private place to cry. My mother needed to move upstairs because medicare would no longer pay for rehab, and they walked me thru how to apply for masshealth. We decided to skip it; it was clear that we only had days left with her. They arranged to give us a giant room so all of our family could come and go without disturbing a roommate, or falling over each other. There was always a cart with cold drinks, ice, and snacks for us - it was truly amazing. This was by far the most devastating experience of my life, and WNC made it so much better for our family. I am humbled by how compassionate the entire staff was from the receptionist to the aides to the nurses to LNP McGeachie, and I can't believe they do this for a living. I'll be eternally grateful for their care for ME! Not just my mother. Medicine isn't just a science, it's an art. These people are all artists. read more

My husband was recently admitted there after a stay a Lahey, The main goal was to help him get his strength back and be able to walk with minimal assistance, and be able to do his own personal care. The Therapist are wonderful, Speech, Occupational and Physical. They are all so pleasant it makes him happy to go with them for his exercises. I'm glad to say he is improving physically, unfortunately his mental status is not and probably wont. read more

If you parents are non English speaker, don't even bother to tour them. I toured them and they said they would make translation work with apps, and they had opening beds. After the application sent over they denied us and it was because they could not provide service for translation. I called a few times and they never called me back as they promised. Very unprofessional. I had to rush to find a different place in a couple of days. read more

My 92 year old mother recovered from a surgery at the Winchester Nursing Center, Rehabilitation Unit. There were so many issues and things wrong with this place, that it would take me a book to write down all the issues. In summary, the nursing staff were awful. They acted like it was inconvenient every time I needed to ask a question. That's if I could find them. The CNA's were rude and had no problem showing their annoyance at having to help my mother in the bathroom. The dietician and food staff could never get my mother's special diet correct. I literally had to be at this facility every day in order to help my mother with a variety of things including getting her water, overseeing the constant mistakes with her diet, and helping her to the bathroom. I would avoid this nursing center and the other two that are owned by the same private family. The service was a nightmare for me and my mother. Privately owned does not necessarily mean better service. I was fooled. And the medicare ratings are a joke. They mean nothing when it comes to quality service for your loved one. read more
