After the long drive to Shelburne, I'd have been happy to see just about any structure with a bed…read morein it waiting for me. But, when the long drive ends at Whispering Waves, there's too much to be excited about before going straight to sleep! The cottage I stayed in over the weekend back during my visit was huge: a huge bedroom, fold-out couches, real fireplaces, a veranda overlooking the water, a jacuzzi for two in the master bedroom and a full kitchen. Personally, I'd never stay in Shelburne (sorry...) for long enough to use all of those things, but man are they ever nice to have for a getaway where you don't want to have to rely on restaurants for every single meal. Still, for those who want a bit of a middle ground, with certain packages the owners of the cottages actually cook dinner for two and bring it down to your place so that you can enjoy it all romantically and junk if you're into that sort of thing. Clean, close to town (ish...or we got lost which I can't totally rule out), and friendly owners who cook? What's not to love!

Only stayed here one night, in retrospect I wish I had booked more…read more Paul and Charlotte are very welcoming hosts, our cabin was very comfortable with excellent sunset views. There are some really nice beaches nearby. The decor is nicely done rustic with a nautical theme and is kept in top notch condition. Be forewarned, this off the beaten path so there are NO local restaurants, the closest is 20 minutes away (Shelburne at 30 min. away has more, and a Sobeys market). Still, there's a nicely stocked kitchen once you're prepared for it, even has starter coffee/ tea if you forget. We had a very homey impromptu meal and shared a beautiful sunset on the porch. All in all a big thumbs up - will keep Whispering Waves in mind for any return trip.

My father, brother, and I just had an amazing weekend in two of these beautiful, rustic, cottages…read more The physical environment alone is enough to transport travellers to a refreshing vacation that is both relaxed and sufficiently equipped for comfort. The number of cottages (some spacious and some small with a redeemingly cuteness) helps to ensure availability and provides a village-like walkabout. You can chose to use the outdoor communal furniture and fire pit to socialize with neighbouring travellers while the young'ns use the playground, or you can borrow a portable bbq and hang out on your patio with a good book. Beyond it's physical beauty, the new owners Wendy and Jay, and their staff, fill this space with an accommodating and welcoming energy. I felt immediately welcome and continued to be surprised by their generous dedication to making sure my family had the most comfortable stay possible. Riverview cottages is close to many amenities and is a 15 minute walk to "downtown Parrsboro". I have stayed in these cottages on many occasions and it is a sure good time. Even though the river (which is actually an aboiteau) now runs low, this place is rushing with welcoming feelings and relaxing vibes.

We booked our cabins with the previous owners over a year ago as we were planning a family reunion…read more Once the new owners came on board we discussed that we wanted as many of the cabins as possible - so we were able to secure 7 cabins for about 20 people and 4 dogs. Everyone stayed a minimum of 2 nights with half of us staying 5-7 days. When we discussed our plans with the new owners back in April 2012. They were aware that we were a large group, that we wanted to be able to put the children to bed and stay up with the adults and socialize with our family we only get to see every few years. They assured us that they planned on putting in fire pits and that this would not be a problem. Family travelled from around North America to come to this reunion. When we arrived we find multiple signs all over the place stating 11pm quiet time. The signs say noise after 11pm police will be called, this is your final warning and so on. We also found out that there were no fire pits built. We offered to buy a stand alone movable pit to use during out stay and that we would leave it. We were given a firm/rude "no". The quiet time is more like a curfew. At 10:55 each night the owners come around and ask you to go into your cabins. The cabins are rustic, which I like, but there is no insulation for noise so when 15 people are crowded into one cabin to visit, it get noisy. If there had been fire pits away from the cabins, we would have happily hung out there. There were also a number of instances where they said rude/strange things to members of our group. They definitely lack customer service skills and they customer is not always right. Here are some examples: 1. Family with two kids drives into the cabins and asks "where is the office?" Answer: "Didn't you see the signs???" 2. For two groups of people when they arrived from long distances in the early afternoon, they were made to wait for the 3pm check in time even though their cabins were completely ready. This meant a mom and two kids under 4 napped in their car in the heat. 3. Husband arrives a day later than his wife. Comment from owners "well check in isn't until 3pm - why are you here???" His wife had checked in the day before so it wasn't an issue so then they said "Those dogs better be friendly - we have guests who are afraid of dogs." They website clearly states pet friendly and we all called and made sure they knew we were bringing dogs. We had previously thought we might book the whole complex for the next reunion weekend n 2 years. After the way we were all treated we will be looking elsewhere. The cottages themselves are great - very rustic but charming unto themselves. Very much unlike the owners.

Every door in this bed and breakfast says "Bed and Breakfast, You make both". This is supposed to…read morebe humorous, but it is actually true. When we arrived, after being reprimanded for wearing our shoes in the house, we were told that our room was on the third floor. We had expected two beds, we found one bed and one unmade pull out couch. After bumping our heads on the slanted walls, we tried to turn on the TV which didn't work. Her advice "just push the buttons and figure it out". We pushed them all and there was no improvement. Several lights are hanging from their sockets and don't work. In the morning we arrived at the appointed hour of 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and she was not there. After reading the other review, we decided not to wait. If you make the mistake of coming here, bring cash because her credit card machine still doesn't work.

I stayed here a few years ago, but wanted to add my comments. If you do a simple internet search…read moreof this place, you'll see that most reviews are negative - and rightly so. When I arrived, a single traveler, despite the fact that I had a confirmed reservation, the owner told me that there were no rooms available but that she would give me her "son's room." I wasn't in the mood to go off in search of an alternative, so I went with it. Extremely small room, uncomfortable bed, and clearly not set up as a guest room. As they say, "Strike one." In the morning, despite having a set time for breakfast, the owner was nowhere to be found. All of the guests gathered in the living room / dining room area, and we were fairly unimpressed. Then, the owner appeared with bags of groceries. Of course, she still had to prepare the breakfast, so all of us were inconvenienced by the wait and having to accommodate the owner's schedule. Strike two. When I was leaving, I was told that the owner's credit card machine was down and I would have to pay cash instead. This required the extra step (and delay) of having to run to a bank as I did not have the cash on hand. Strike three. Finally, a personal note: the owner is a prolific gossip and even during my very brief stay, I overheard her make nasty comments about both former and current guests. She also made some fairly critical and generalistic comments about American citizens, which I found offensive but more importantly, from a business perspective, not very wise on her part. I'm sure that many of her customers and potential customers live in the United States of America... Bottom line: you can easily do much better than the Verandah, so you should avoid it.
