But, when the long drive ends at Whispering Waves, there's too much to be excited about before going straight to sleep! The cottage I stayed in over the weekend back during my visit was huge: a huge bedroom, fold-out couches, real fireplaces, a veranda overlooking the water, a jacuzzi for two in the master bedroom and a full kitchen. Personally, I'd never stay in Shelburne (sorry...) for long enough to use all of those things, but man are they ever nice to have for a getaway where you don't want to have to rely on restaurants for every single meal. Still, for those who want a bit of a middle ground, with certain packages the owners of the cottages actually cook dinner for two and bring it down to your place so that you can enjoy it all romantically and junk if you're into that sort of thing. Clean, close to town (ish...or we got lost which I can't totally rule out), and friendly owners who cook? What's not to love!

Only stayed here one night, in retrospect I wish I had booked more…read more Paul and Charlotte are very welcoming hosts, our cabin was very comfortable with excellent sunset views. There are some really nice beaches nearby. The decor is nicely done rustic with a nautical theme and is kept in top notch condition. Be forewarned, this off the beaten path so there are NO local restaurants, the closest is 20 minutes away (Shelburne at 30 min. away has more, and a Sobeys market). Still, there's a nicely stocked kitchen once you're prepared for it, even has starter coffee/ tea if you forget. We had a very homey impromptu meal and shared a beautiful sunset on the porch. All in all a big thumbs up - will keep Whispering Waves in mind for any return trip.

LOVE love LOVED the Planter's Barracks Bed & Breakfast. From the lovely and informative manager,…read moreErin, to the doll of a housekeeper, Bee, this place was a hit from start to finish! Originally Fort Hughes, the barracks were built in 1778 as rest quarters for the military during the war. Although we visited in the fall (late October) and it was far too cold to enjoy the yard, fire pit, or deck - the grounds are absolutely beautiful. There are six suites here each with a private washroom and shower or tub. Every room has a different feel with a slightly different layout. Each room has an electric fireplace fit into where the original fireplaces were. Of course there are some odd nuances here like sloping or creaky floors - however, I love it all! Erin is a gem! She's bursting with knowledge and history on the barracks as well as the local area. Ask her for a suggestion or idea, she won't let you down! Um and hello, how did I almost forget the amazing food?!?! With a focus on local, everything from the morning coffee (Just Us Coffee) to the produce, you are in for a gourmet and elegant treat! The breakfast was among if not the best I've ever had on vacation. The yogurt parfait was to die for. The cottage cheese frittata was light and fluffy like a dream! Of course, everyday is different. Also, upstairs there is a small communal kitchen with freshly baked muffins, coffee, tea, sweets and a fridge to chill your local wine or keep your gelato frozen until late night treat time. Everything you need is right there from a corkscrew to red or white wineglasses. Planter's Barracks has really thought of it all. Even the complimentary toiletries are earth friendly. I could go on and on. But really, check out their website or give Erin a call to find out more! You won't be disappointed. I only wish we could have changed our flights and stayed longer! https://plantersbarracks.com

Erin is, hands down, the most friendly, gracious and helpful innkeeper I've ever experienced. I stayed in a number of B&Bs and high end hotels and resorts while touring PEI and Nova Scotia. This place was my favorite and the place I have the fondest memories of.

When we arrived, after being reprimanded for wearing our shoes in the house, we were told that our room was on the third floor. We had expected two beds, we found one bed and one unmade pull out couch. After bumping our heads on the slanted walls, we tried to turn on the TV which didn't work. Her advice "just push the buttons and figure it out". We pushed them all and there was no improvement. Several lights are hanging from their sockets and don't work. In the morning we arrived at the appointed hour of 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and she was not there. After reading the other review, we decided not to wait. If you make the mistake of coming here, bring cash because her credit card machine still doesn't work.

I stayed here a few years ago, but wanted to add my comments. If you do a simple internet search…read moreof this place, you'll see that most reviews are negative - and rightly so. When I arrived, a single traveler, despite the fact that I had a confirmed reservation, the owner told me that there were no rooms available but that she would give me her "son's room." I wasn't in the mood to go off in search of an alternative, so I went with it. Extremely small room, uncomfortable bed, and clearly not set up as a guest room. As they say, "Strike one." In the morning, despite having a set time for breakfast, the owner was nowhere to be found. All of the guests gathered in the living room / dining room area, and we were fairly unimpressed. Then, the owner appeared with bags of groceries. Of course, she still had to prepare the breakfast, so all of us were inconvenienced by the wait and having to accommodate the owner's schedule. Strike two. When I was leaving, I was told that the owner's credit card machine was down and I would have to pay cash instead. This required the extra step (and delay) of having to run to a bank as I did not have the cash on hand. Strike three. Finally, a personal note: the owner is a prolific gossip and even during my very brief stay, I overheard her make nasty comments about both former and current guests. She also made some fairly critical and generalistic comments about American citizens, which I found offensive but more importantly, from a business perspective, not very wise on her part. I'm sure that many of her customers and potential customers live in the United States of America... Bottom line: you can easily do much better than the Verandah, so you should avoid it.
