I had the pleasure of participating in the half marathon this year. Although this race does share many similarities with other races throughout the state, it does make a niche for itself in its varied, picturesque scenery, supportive staff, and plentiful breakfast at the end.
Pro's
This race has all of the usual amenities: timing chip, well-marked route, topographical layout, and a supportive staff. I must say that this race was beautiful. The route moves throughout the picturesque Paso countryside and past various wineries (STAY AWAY FROM THE J.LOHR WATER STATION, the winery employees hand-out juice). The race begins and terminates at a spacious and accommodating outdoor venue near a lake - what a great way to end a 13 mile run!
Con's
If you want some variation in the terrain, this route just doesn't have it. Although the course has its fair share of grade changes, the entire route follows a paved country road. I can see how this could be an issue for some runners but having trained in Los Angeles, I didn't mind the lack of vehicular congestion for a change. There's a short hill with a 70% grade directly preceding the finish-line - just about the last thing I wanted to see at the end of the 13th mile and I'm sure the female runner who blew chunks on the hill in front of me would share that sentiment.
It should be noted that this race often coincides with the Paso Zin Fest. This being said, If you're not the type of competitive runner who can go-out and get ripped on wine the day before a race (I AM), you should plan to DD on Saturday and drink on Sunday.
All-in-all, I would definitely make this an annual run. Despite my unhealthy Saturday spent overindulging in cigars and Zin, I was able to muscle-out a very competitive time (unfortunately, the race coincided with the LA marathon which may have detracted from the attendance a bit) read more
