Since they had just recently opened, they had a one week free trial going on when I went. I think that offer is over now, but I think there's occasional specials that occur though out the year. Totally worth it to ask if you decide to go there. The instructors are super nice! Master Kim, Adrian and Danny were super accommodating to a newbie like me. Master Kim made sure to check how each person was doing throughout the class, making sure that each of us were able to keep up. His instructions were clear and easy to understand throughout the class and he was super patient in making sure we were doing the moves properly. As there were several different levels attending the class, the instructors would teach us individually as well to help us focus on certain moved based on our "belt" level. I only went for two classes during the week, but would gladly go again. I was so tired after both classes! Would highly recommend them if you're looking for something new to try out :)

The Acadia location is on my way home from work, so it was perfect. The lady who signed me up at the desk, Laurie, was friendly and inviting and introduced me to everyone in the room. The guy who was leading the class, Chris, was a goofball and was joking with everyone. The class itself: AWESOME. I have done some kickboxing in the past in Montreal, and it quickly became my workout 'love'. I have checked out 3-4 other similar classes in Calgary to simulate the same experience in hopes of finding my favourite, and I think I finally have. Arashi-Do's Cardio Kickboxing class was a circuit-type, kickboxing-style training with the right combination of intense cardio, strength, kickboxing moves, and fun. I know quite a bit about fitness and am acquainted with a lot of different types of exercises, and yet they still managed to throw in a few exercises that I have never done/seen. This was a pleasant, and AWESOME surprise. At the end of the 45 minutes, my butt was thoroughly kicked, and I LOVED every minute of it. The only thing I regretted was not coming to check this class out earlier! The monthly prices they quoted me seemed a bit high, but I will worry about that once my coupon classes are over! I've only tried the CrossFit classes here, but they also offer various martial arts such as Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu. The facility is divided between a very large floor mat sparring area, a full sized fighting octagon, and a functional fitness area for CrossFit (pull up bars, barbell racks, jumping boxes, etc.). The men's "change room" consists of a small semi-closed off cluster of lockers in the main gym area. The women have an actual room. Being located in an industrial park, there is plenty for parking. The CrossFit classes at this location differ from the others I have tried insofar as they tend to be consistently focused on constant high rep, high intensity intuitive exercises (e.g. box jumps, kipping pull ups, push up pyramids, crunches) and a few barbell moves. This is in contrast to some other CrossFits where you can spend a significant portion of a class working on developing a particular "functional" movement like a headstand, barbell combos, or some kettle bell manoeuvre. If you're looking for an efficient calorie burning, stamina building workout class you can dive into without much of a learning curve, try this place.

The feedback was all around positive from parents and teens. The instructor (and padded attacker - or was HE being attacked?!) were very knowledgeable and well prepared. The course is designed to be empowering for teens, to trust their instincts and their feelings and to be confident at being able to make their own decisions. The teens are thought that they don't always have to be "polite" and be taken advantage of if something doesn't feel right. It touches on bullying, boundaries when dating that they feel comfortable with and how to stick to them, how to avoid potentially dangerous of uncomfortable situations that you can't get out of. Basically being smart and confident and thinking ahead. They are also taught hands on training so that if any situation did arise they would know how to defend themselves to get out of the situation. The course builds confidence and allows people to plan ahead so if something ever did happen they would not freeze. All around well worth the investment (in time and money!), particularly for this age group.
