I do not know...maybe there is a bigger slower sister market somewhere) many times on my pilgrimage to the Columbia Road Flower Market. I always vow to pop in for a bubble tea (one of my vices) and finally, finally -- I made it. With a boba virgin, no less! So my pal and I sidle up and make some decisions. They have a pretty good setup, not super super extensive, but surely cover the basics. I go for a red bean milk tea with boba, she goes for a passionfruit juice tea (clear) with boba. Both are hits! Both with actually honest to god ICE. So they are cold and boba-y and perfect. They use powders (not real fruit) but so it goes. The guys were friendly and there is a whole market of oddities (to me) that I'll be back to explore. I'll also be hitting up the fresh made bahn mi bar, where you can customise the toppings and get it rarin' to go. The stuff looked pretty fresh, we'll see. Although not the biggest supermarket in Chinatown, I still tend to come here for my Chinese food…read moreshopping. They achieved a small measure of fame when they were featured on one of Jamie Oliver's cookery programs a few years ago. In fact, some of the best stuff is outside in the fruit and veg section. They tend to have a good selection of tropical fruits when they're in season. You can find trays of rambutan, mangosteens, mangoes and langsat. It's also an opportunity for you to come up close with a whole jackfruit and the infamous durian. It's the green spiky football sized fruit that is the notorious taste test as to whether you've truly embraced south east Asian food! You can buy the edible part in trays inside the supermarket - the soft flesh surrounding the inedible seeds smells strong and aromatic and tastes like custard but much sweeter and stronger. A tip for shoppers is that you can find trays of durian in the chilled cabinets at the back of the shop as well as by the tills. You can find the usual array of tinned goods, bottles of sauces, rows upon rows of instant noodles (Maggi are my favourite brand) and savoury and sweet snacks in the front of the store. Down some steps in the back are the chilled and frozen cabinets containing chlled edible goods as well as the cooking utensils. The queues have got much better since the introduction of more tills with barcode scanners. For those new to Chinese cuisine, I recommend some of the trays of sweet biscuits at the front of the shop or some sticky rice from the chilled cabinet. Perhaps a cook in sauce from the back of the shop that will beat anything out of a jar from Tesco. If you're feeling adventurous, try some thousand year old eggs or make your own wontons with some pastry wrappers from the chilled cabinets. However, my major tip is to try some mangosteens or rambutans when they're in season - they knock fruits from temperate climates for 6. Have fun!

If you walk to the back of the shop there are chopsticks, knives, woks and other cooking utensils. If you are a first time Chinese cook it's not a bad idea to pick up a few things to help prepare your meal. In addition to the cooking items you'll find a small selection of pre-packaged vegetables and a large variety of canned goods. The shop also has lots of Chinese sweets. They are brightly coloured and packaged, I've never had them, but I've been awfully tempted. New Loon Moon Supermarket is the perfect size for the first time Chinese cook. The size makes it easy to get around without feeling overwhelmed and the prices won't burn a hole in your wallet.

The same reason - refrigeration out of order caused by flooding considering the area is 33 ft above sea level. and had no incidence of flooding previously. Last year in the middle of the pandemic we were there 15 mins queueing up to go in only to find lots of empty shelves. This afternoon we bought a pack of beef flank weighing 1300 gms only to find 435 gms (almost a third of the weight) of thick fat hidden under the leaner meat - was this on purpose ?

Luckily, a friend dragged me here last week and I finally got to play in the Chinese supermarket I'd heard so much about. It's fun here. There's stuff you won't ever have seen before (I lived in China for a while and I still didn't recognise some of the stuff). It's not easy that everything is sold in bulk. I ate pak choi for almost every meal over three days. But, it would be great if you were planning dinner for friends. I have a bamboo steamer now. Everyone is getting wontons whether they like them or not. I wasn't impressed with their Crispy duck - the carving was so bad that it was 30% bone which was annoying (and has probably cost them that final star actually). I'll try the char sui next time. I'm very excited about that. They stay open late on a Sunday too (illegal? maybe? leave them alone, please). It's not cheap here, but that's understandable. That's a bit like complaining that Cyber Candy is expensive. Besides I don't know many supermarkets that will sell me a lobster that's still swimming about in a tank.

Look for good prices on pork belly, a favourite for Chinese cooks long before it became fashionable in trendy restaurants. Also worth a browse to see cuts that you won't find in Tesco - pigs' trotters and pigs' ears! I also think Loon Fung is the best Chinatown supermarket to buy longans, a round fruit with brown skin. For a mental picture, think of a lychee and shrink it about half. Now, get a mental taste of lychee, sweeten and intensify the flavour, make a little more perfumed and juicy and that's the taste of longan. Wonderful!! It's right on my way home, and despite what it looks like from the outside, has a very extensive selection. Particularly if you are looking for Asian foodstuffs, Indian spices, or rare ethnic ingredients -- there is a good shot Lodos will have what you need. Their fresh fruit and veg is on par with the big chains (meaning to say -- it's fine). I can always pick up a few things (courgette, peppers, potatoes, etc), but know that I will need to make them within the day. It's a good incentive to get cooking! They have all the usual things too of course: milk, eggs, bread, etc. The staff has always been friendly, it's well priced for the area and I've not been let down yet. OH, and the best part!? No one touches me while I shop (due to overcrowding), I don't have to wait in a huge que when I just need butter or milk, and for godssakes I don't have to suffer through the "convenient" self-checkout process. (I PUT IT ON THE SCALE, ROBOT!) -- ok sorry, needless to say Lodos is going to feel more old school and when it comes to grocery shopping that is just absolutely fine in my book. No muss, no fuss!

EXCEPT, this corner shop has an Asian food section that means I don't ever have to go to Chinatown to get fresh tofu or kimchi again, it's all right there at Lodos. I wasn't sure whether they would have everything we needed for a cooking project, and they really did. Plenty of spices, sauces, condiments and shelf groceries, as well as fridge and freezer options. I was genuinely impressed. We looked around the rest of the shop and it seemed better than your average corner shop, a good range of spices and I can imagine you'll find most of what you need there. But for me, this is genuinely going to change the way I shop, and let me do more interesting international cooking.
