As we road tripped across America during spring break of 2018, we found ourselves spending the night in the small town of Winner, a place with few dining options. At 6:00 p.m. on a Tuesday night, most local businesses had shut down for the evening. McDonald's and Subway were options, but both have built global empires by serving substandard food that our family refuses to eat. The local Pizza Hut has been dubbed the "dirtiest in America." But then, standing on the eastern outskirts of town, a shiny beacon summoned us from afar, that vaguely elliptical emblem with the letters DQ in the center. This was the best option for dinner in Winner! The chicken strips, cheese curds, and french fries were on par with other Dairy Queens, as were the endless ice cream treats, including a rare DQ with my favorite butterscotch dip cone. They even had the modern soda machine with a push button touch screen to select any drink you could possibly want. Sometimes it is just missing napkins, which is a real annoyance when eating behind the wheel. Other times the food is wrong, or some item is missing. Because from my first visit I've never received the type of service and hospitality most would expect from Subway, the type of service and hospitality that Subway expects from it's Sandwich Artists. I've been yelled at, I've been ignored, I've been encouraged to use the drive-thru rather than walk in (by the same SA that yelled at me, the one I sent a complaint to Subway about), and have generally been treated like a second-class bothersome customer since my complaint to Subway Corp. about being yelled at. Day-before-yesterday was the last straw though. I tried to order online at about 7:45PM, it wouldn't take my order. I walked across the street, was the only person waiting to order (just one other couple in the store eating), and was, again, ignored . I had to instigate the order (the two SA's actually stood there and wouldn't even look me in the eyes until I spoke up). The only thing I was asked was what kind of bread and cheese I wanted. No offer of a footlong. No offer of toasting. No offer of a meal. When I asked about the online ordering not operating the only response I got was "I don't have anything to do with that!" And, not surprisingly, no "Thank You" when I was leaving. Look, without trying to sound like a "Kevin", the type of service this franchise has to offer cannot be the same service I was trained to give when I first started my employment with Subway in the early '80's, nor the type of training I provided in my years of managing Subway franchises.
