After living in the area for almost a year, we finally made the trek here to sign up for a library…read morecard. Unfortunately, this is the closest library to us and it's in what seems like a very sketchy area. The building is very rundown, carpets are filthy, and restrooms are extremely dirty. The selection is bleak at best. We did like that there was a completely separate kids area but that was the only thing that we liked about this library. The staff didnt acknowledge us until we went up to the desk and even then, the guy wasn't the friendliest. We got a card but I don't see myself coming back to this location unless it's to renew the card and have access to Libby.

The Lake Wales Public Library has been serving the community of Lake Wales since 1919. Like many…read moresmall communities in Florida of this time, the library started out as a Woman's Club civic project. The women accepted books and magazines and set up the first library on a shelf in their clubhouse. After the library outgrew the club it was moved to the Dixie Walesbilt Hotel in downtown Lake Wales and then to a room in the Lake Wales City Hall. In 1957 the Lake Wales Library Association/Friends of the Library was formed to raise money to build a library building. In 1960 the town library opened on Cypress Garden Lane, on the shores of Crystal Lake in 1960. The library was further expanded expanded in 1991. Today the library collection includes over 80,000 books, audiovisuals, kits, archives, periodicals, maps, clippings, and software. I really like small town libraries like this one that are the heartbeat of their community. It lends materials but the Lake Wales Public Library is also gathering place. In the lobby of the library is a beautiful mural of lake Wales most famous attraction, Bok Tower. In front of it is a detailed model of the tower encased in glass. Also in this part of the library is Ye Olde Bookshop selling a large selection of secondhand books. On the wall of the library there are paintings by local artists and archival photographs. Some of the programs the library is hosting this month include celebrating Native American History Month, chair yoga, needlework arts, and a teen creative writing club. This library is so charming and a has a beautiful view of lake Crystal from the windows. It is a great resource for education and culture in Lake Wales.

Cute little library I took my 6 year old granddaughter to, at her request. Turns out she already…read morehad an active account through Lake Alfred Elementary School. They do not issue library cards; I suppose that's a thing of the past (not sure if others do anymore). She picked out her five books (the max you can do) from the children's section and the checkout was simple. It is normally a two week turnaround, but the librarian added an extra week to give her extra time (which I don't think she'll actually need). She also asked, and applied, if I wanted a text message reminder 3 days before due day. That was/is a nice touch. The facility was clean, and quiet of course. We played a round of checkers before departing and I actually saw a couple of atlas type books I found interesting. I may have to swing in here solo and hang out to go through them.
