A long, long time ago, in the days before the glitzy Queens Plaza with its Chanel boutique and other swanky designer stores, the Wintergarden was probably the poshest place to shop in the Queen Street Mall. (I've said it before and I'll say it again - times were tough on the fashion front when I was growing up in Brisbane, let me tell you!)
It originally opened in 1982 and was considered the height of chic at the time. But it also had a sandwich bar in the food court that sold the best roast beef sarnies. Ever. And a fairly decent public loo that I always used to use when nature called - as there was never a queue. And it always had loo roll.
But I had to say goodbye to those roast beef sarnies a while ago, and transfer my loo loyalty over to the top floor Queens Plaza one - because the Wintergarden has been undergoing a major makeover. I'm talking $100m worth of "surgery". That's a serious, serious image change going on.
Stage 1 of the refurb is currently open (Stage 2 is set to be launched in 2012) and even though it looks the part (all highly polished marble floors, and spangly new shops like Swarovski, Jurlique, Pure Indulgence, Wittners, Veronica Maine - with Strike Bowling Alley upstairs), it's a little, well, lacklustre. And dead.
Wandering through the other day, I hardly saw another soul there other than shop staff. And although I like the interesting touches (like the fact that instead of being covered up by ugly, bare MDF boards, the building works are being hidden by big white boards covered in artworks by cool local artist, Simon de Groot), it does lack atmosphere.
I can't help thinking that they might have been better off not opening it in stages, and just throwing a big old bash when the whole thing is finished. Rumour has it that they're super keen to lure big name designers (with Donna Karan New York being touted as a potential). And apparently "symbolic" screens (whatever the hell that means) will be placed above each entrance. These screens will feature programmed LED lighting and will be unique to the Brisbane CBD. As I don't know what that means, I'm not sure I'm impressed.
As long as there's a whole load of new shops (rather than the same old, same old), bring on Stage 2, I say. Are you hearing me, Wintergarden developers? read more
