If you like adventure, LOOK NO FURTHER! Canoe camping on the WI River is a must-do if you're a crunchy folk in the Midwest. And yes, WI Canoe Company is the best! We had a great experience with them. No mishaps. They were really chill and helpful, and made the renting process a breeze. And yes, their website is full of snarky WI sarcasm, but it makes the experience all the more homey. Their FAQs are straight to the point. They truly answer every question you might have on there, and there's no doubt if you have another question they'd give their frank and honest advice. We did the Mazo to Spring Green trip, and its foolproof fun! It's an 18 mile straight shot down a lazy river. The paddling is pretty intense if you're not used to it, and personally, we got rained on, fogged out, and sand in every crevice, BUT even then it was still fun. We rented like 5 days out before 4th of July weekend, and I think we still got a good rate (on their website it says they raise prices, once their rentals run low to deal with demand). 150ish dollars for a 2 day canoe/paddle rental, and a 20ish minute shuttle was a pretty decent deal. TLDR: WCC makes fun easy! They'll handle the canoe part, you handle the fun. read more

They got our canoes to us. They picked them up. Their website is good. The driver was nice enough and reasonably helpful, but nothing that stands out as exemplary. The canoes are fine - the least expensive type available and very heavy. WCCs paddles are nice and they they offer different lengths. The laminated map they provide is handy, though they were short and asked some in our shuttle just to take a pic of it. (DO take the map - you don't think you'd need it because you just go down river, but it is helpful to see how you're progressing, find a landing, etc.) I think most of the outfitters on the river run aluminum boats and while I understand these less-expensive plastic canoes have some advantages, I do prefer aluminum. But I found the process of planning our trip frustrating. The website has lots of info and much of it is super-helpful, but I did find a few contradictions (for example shuttle times listed in the FAQs were not consistent with what was available when I made my reservation, so I had to contact my group and rework the plans a bit. What a pain.) Earlier in the planning I called and got a voicemail basically begging me not to leave a message. It gave some stat about how many calls they have to deal with and how much that sucks. All I could think was how many small/medium business owners would kill to be contacted by that many potential customers. Excuse the sarcasm, but...poor baby! :) So I emailed and waited a bit over a day to hear back, during which time we almost took our business down the river to WCC's competitor. I have no problem with using WCC again but if I'm planning the trip I'll probably choose another outfitter. (Unsolicited tips for WCC: In smaller companies I see 2 common approaches: "we will meet our customers where they are, be grateful for their business, and try to delight them" and "we will work to train our customers to do things the way we want". It seems to me you've chosen the latter, which is absolutely your right, but you can't really change us / Joe Public and I always see more long-term growth in both revenue and profit from approach A. The style of your website copy often shows a light-hearted, fun candor, but the subtext screams "we really wish our customers were not such a pain in butt." This is understandable but indicative of "approach B" thinking (see the prior paragraph.) For example: many of your FAQ answers are defensive and condescending, such as "unless you've got your crap together and you know what's going on, you're not going to be able to organize and load your stuff into the vehicles fast enough for us to leave on time." And those annoying phone calls...see them for the fantastic opportunities they are. Find a way to structure your staffing to handle them (you may need to hire someone / more people just to cover phones on weekends) train these folks to thrill the customers. It will pay off in spades! OK, I'm getting off the soap box now...) read more

If you want to get away and and unplug from the world, this trip is for you. Unlike car camping, you're truly remote on the river while still being able to access resources for emergencies. These guys are awesome. They love what they do and it shows. I like the fact that they will provide shuttle service if you bring your own canoe or kayak whereas other outfitters either get fussy or flat out refuse. They want everyone to enjoy themselves. I asked if they could put me in at Blackhawk Landing rather than Prairie du Sac to which they were very accommodating. Very much appreciate it. Our group of 12 went on the 10 mile trip last weekend. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We drove up from Chicago and were 20 minutes late, but the staff was kind enough to have a a bus pick up the late group to the landing site. The equipment was all new and we loved the 80's themed names for the different canoes. We'll definitely come back next year and thank the Schmudlachs for such a smooth, friendly, no-hassle process that helped us close out our summer with the bang! read more

Such a great place! Everything that you need to know can be found on their website and you can make reservations there for both the canoe and the shuttle. They'll shuttle you to the start and then when you get back you can just pull the canoe ashore and leave at your leisure. A great time. read more

I took a group of teens from a camp for kids w/ cancer. WCC was phenomenal! 1. Drop off was right on time. 2. We under budgeted for water but they took care of it by dropping off three 7 gallon jugs two launched down river. 3. One of our girls w hearing aides accidentally left her backpack (aides in it) and sleeping bag at the take out. We didn't realize it until later that day when we were unloading back at camp (2.5 hrs away). I called and WCC came to the rescue (after their business had closed for the night). For the second year running, my friends and I have used WCC to do an 18 miler on the river. The equipment is in good shape, the people are friendly, punctual (which I absolutely love), open to giving suggestions, and just able to make the whole trip as painless and fun as possible. Second year with this canoeing outfit. Different trips each year but both well run and very enjoyable. This year, we did a day trip from Arena to Peck's Landing. On this trip, I liked how you drove your car to the end of the route and then shuttled from there to the beginning. That way, when you come off the river, you just jump in your car and go--no waiting for a shuttle, no long ride back to a parking lot. Loved the trip's optional "check-in" point at Woody's--good little convenience store with nice local brews. See you next year. read more

Yeah it's canoe season. We go every year, and it's fantastic. The canoes provided are excellent and big enough to hold everything you need. We always do the 18 mile overnight stretch and it's great. With our group we always drop the supplies and passengers off at the launch site and drop the cars off at the end point. The shuttle back is convenient and it saves a lot of time then reloading our gear into the bus. The river is always beautiful. The staff at the canoe company are always nice and do give any information they may have about the river. Excited to go next year again. read more

First, I'll echo the other positive reviews. All gear is in good shape. Logistics are very simple. They take care of your canoe, life vest, paddles and shuttle, and you take care of the rest. Second, I'll explain why this company excels. We took a large group trip over a busy summer weekend. There were a couple of issues, both of which were our (the customers') fault. The employees fixed everything. Here's what happened: 1) Some of our drivers arrived late. The way it works is, we drop off people and gear at the boat launch and then drive to the end point and parking lot in Spring Green. WCC then shuttles drivers back to the launch. A few of our drivers were late, but WCC staggered the shuttles and waited to make sure that they could shuttle everyone over. No complaining or lecturing, they just did it, even though it was our fault that we were late. 2) Our trip leader made a mistake and booked the wrong launch point. All of our people and gear were at one launch point (the one we thought we booked) while WCC was taking our driver and canoes to another launch point (the one we actually booked). Once this mistake was discovered, WCC immediately volunteered to drive our canoes and drivers from the correct launch point to our incorrect, but preferred, launch point. Again, customer's fault, but they happily took care of it and got us on the river ASAP. read more
