I have been coming to this campground since I was a child. I have seen all the changes. But this year everything as gone back to when I was a kid. instead of working toilets they have ports potties. There is a water problem since the water spicket in my area is not working and the one that we use the water comes out really slow. they Should mention that to people who made a reservation so you can plan accordingly and bring more water Maybe it is the cuts to funding for the forest service. read more

We really enjoyed our trip here. The campsites themselves are very spacious. Your not on top of your neighbors. You have plenty of room. The host came around everyday and sold firewood an took out he trash took care of bathrooms. There are trails to hike on along the river and one in the camp site that is quarter mile long with signs telling you about the hike. There are some great hikes along the rode out to the campground (off main road but on the road you turned off to get to campground) that are AMAZING!! Waterfalls. Pools. Just beautiful. We would defiantly return. read more

My family and I had our annual camping trip and decided to try a different spot, we came across this one... There are some pros and there were some cons of this site. Pros: 1. Beautiful swimming holes! Big enough for multiple families, rocks high enough to jump off, water is clean and clear. We literally spend half our day here. 2) A lot of shade whether it be at the swimming holes or campgrounds. Neutral: 1) They do have multiple restrooms throughout the campground, so more than likely there will be one within short walking distance. They are "cleaned" however, how well can you really clean these toilets? Cons: 1) If you are like our family and enjoy music, community, and enjoying the night with adult beverages this site isn't really for you. Lights out are at 10pm and strictly enforced by the park host. She was literally driving around all day and night. She even came to tell our kids they need to keep it down when they were literally sitting around a campfire. It got very annoying. We weren't the only family out late so she was walking site to site trying to put people to sleep. 2) Some camp sites are very small and awkwardly placed. If possible you would want to research or go take a look beforehand. Our sites were fine for the most part, they are all kinda connected, so you may be next to a family not part of your group. There are some along the road on the drive in that there is no way I would ever camp there, just seemed they threw a table and there you go. read more

Very nice campground and the Camp host, Tim was nice and very helpful. One word of warning. Do not attempt to bring a trailer in there. They really should change their web site to not allow trailers. I indicated I had a trailer and it still let me make a reservation. I had a very time getting my trailer around the loop. If you have a very small tent trailer or small RV, you will be OK. Tim was impressed with my trailer driving skills and it took all the skills I had to navigate my 3/4 ton truck and 24 foot trailer through the loop. In addition, the road up to the site is steep and curvy. It is just no place for a large vehicle. read more

Drove here from LA this past weekend and MAN did we have a good time! Our first day was Friday and we finally arrived after taking one too many "wrong" turns. We were greeted by a creepy-looking cabin with a detached garage that looked JUST as creepy if not more. We spent most of Friday hanging around inside and near the cabin. On Saturday we hiked down to the streams to try our luck at fishing (make sure to purchase a California Fishing License if you plan to do the same). Although we didn't catch any fish (possibly bad conditions), we had a great time exploring and hunting for salamanders! (*see photos) Our weekend ended on Sunday and we were on our merry way back to LA. A few things to note: -there is absolutely ZERO cell phone/Internet service here and not available for the next 20-some miles -kitchen is almost fully stocked (we cooked a lot using their oven and range) -faucets and showers provided HOT and COLD water -there were a few ants and ONE dead mouse (not deadmau5! hehe) But that's what you'd expect at a cabin in Sequioa, right?! -you'll LOVE the sound of surging water from the streams below! Absolutely beautiful! I was nervous to camp here because of the heat and vault toilets but once I got a look at the campground near the river, it took my breath away. We stayed in campsites B24 & C23 with friends and it was perfect. The road between us is a one car road so it's narrow. Some things to keep in mind: 1. The weather for Springville showed to be in the 90's however at the campground it was only 80 degrees. Keep in mind the elevation difference. 2. Springville is the last place to buy ice or anything you have forgotten. There are no stores at the campground. 3. The Ranger stated they come by around 8:00 at night to sell firewood for $8 a bundle. You can have fires! 4. There is a large crystal clear watering hole just passed the group sight that is perfect for the whole family at any age. There is a large enough shallow end and a deep enough area to jump off the rocks. There is a slight hike coming back up but totally worth it! 5. There were bees in the morning, gnats and flies all day and little mosquitoes at night. We all came home with 40+ bites. Enjoy your stay! read more

I have never written a review about any place before but I had to do it for Wishon Campground. This place was amazing. We stayed here from Aug 21st until Aug 24th 2014. Unlike Elizabeth we actually stayed at two campsites because of the number of people we had. (6 adults, 2 teenagers, 3 children.) We stayed at number 18 and 19. We loved these sites because they were a bit more private and very shady. Getting there was a pain at first because whenever I put in Wishon Campground on my GPS it gave me the one next to Bass Lake. I would suggest putting in the coordinates or simply following the directions when you reserve your spot. So to start from the beginning... The drive up was pleasant. Steep cliff and small roads. We were met by an awesome camp host by the name of Randy. He can talk your ear off but is a very nice person. We wanted to take a picture with him when we were leaving but sadly he wasn't there so next year if he is still there we will make sure to get one with him. Anyway the first night was mostly setting up and relaxing since we came from the Antelope Valley and was about a 3 hour drive. The second day we took a drive down and went to a spot called the Lower Coffee Camp. This is a day use park and for a $10 parking fee you can stay there until they close at 5:30 PM. On weekends this $10 pass can get you into Upper Coffee Camp as well which is a short drive up the hill some more. Anyway lower was nice. I don't know what Elizabeth was talking about we were able to swim here and get to the water easily and our youngest child was only a year old. The rock slide is amazing and there is a big rock you can jump off of into the water. We all had a blast here. The third day we decided to go to Upper Coffee Camp which is only open on the weekends. This place has more parking but let me tell you the hike down to the water is steep and long. The hike up is worse because you are tired from swimming all day. Personally I liked Lower better but had to try it. Like Lower there are some rock slides but one I tried I named the Whirlpool of Death because if you don't have a float vest or aren't a good swimmer it will spin you around very hard and I have no idea how deep it was. I'm 5'10 and couldn't touch the bottom. So if you do have children and go to upper I would suggest going down where the middle parking is and swimming there. They did have a rope swing but is busy. I would also suggest water shoes since the rocks are very slippery and can be a huge pain in the butt when trying to get out of the water. Overall we all loved this place. Yes there were mice, yes there were bugs, and yes people play there music sometimes to loud. But I mean come on if you go there expecting that everyone is to cater to your needs then maybe camping at campgrounds with other people isn't for you plus cabin camping isn't camping. The vault toilets were gross but hey have you seen any vault toilets that aren't gross haha. They are always gross. But for being vault toilets they were decent. Not the best but the host does care and does try to take care of them. I have been testing the waters for sometime now and trying many different campgrounds to see what we enjoyed the best. I have to say that out of all of them Wishon has been our favorite and we will definitely be going back again next year. read more

This campground has a lot to offer for such a great price! I love camping here, reserving a spot/site is really easy and vacant. We love the campground, there is a fire pit for each site, a communal bathroom in the middle, and water for 3-4 sites to share. I love cooking on a open fire, hiking up to the vast sequoia trees, swimming in the river and sleeping under the stars. I try to come out here 2-3 times a year to get away from the city. Beware, your phone will not work out here, there is no connection. You have been warned. read more

CALL BEFORE BOOKING!! Bumping this up from 1/5 to 2/5 because the camp host was kind and honest about the current situation here. The camp site does look pretty and scenic as mentioned by the other posts. BUT! There has been a brush fire 3 miles north of the campsite for the past month which is apparently contained, but has been causing very thick smoke in the area. Even if this is a scenic site, the smoke clouds your view and the whole scenery is gray. Within a few minutes of arriving our eyes started getting irritated. The host mentioned the smoke is much worse in the mornings. We arrived at noon and it was already unbearable. Another horrific problem mentioned by the camp host - this place has been heavily swarmed with flies for the past year and they have no idea what's causing it. It was our first live experience of a horror scene covered in a heavily infested, thick, black cloud of flies summoned by dark magic. Want specifics? Try 3 flies per cubic inch in the whole atmosphere. If you stand in place and rotate your head, you'll bump 15 flies against your cheek by the end of your motion. We saw at least 35 camp sites with only 3 that were being used. Just like us, many others must have left immediately upon arrival. Not sure if we are willing to risk the long drive to revisit this place. read more

Old oak grove campground provided a canopy to shade us from the heat and yet let the sun streak through so as not to feel dark and dreary. Kinda a magical garden feel. Water holes walkable and drivable for COLD water fun. Some fishing success within campground, as well. Would've been 5 stars but they were in between camp hosts so I give the rangers 5 stars for their effort to keep us stocked with toilet paper, but a water shortage was not something they were able to fix. Also, our site had Carpenter bees so we couldn't use the picnic table without them bugging us. Overall nice campground, but remote, so hard to do day trips. read more

If you want a cold-season Sierra campground with gorgeous big sites and ancient oaks and a rushing river to sing you to sleep, this is it. Host Randy and his sweet Lab could not have been more welcoming. Camping late Nov, we found the water off so bring your water, but we could buy wood and stay warm with the campfire. The road up is twisty and has some potholes but low-clearance was fine. I'll return whenever I need a mountain camp out after most of the cg's are closed for the winter. read more

Great place! No flushing toilets but clean water available. It's quiet and easy to get around. A running creek right near the sight but no nearby shops to get food. There is NO CELL SIGNAL. Heads up- the road to get to Wishon Campground in the last four miles is at a steeper incline and very windy, but it's paved. read more

Wishon Campground appears to be a local hang out. We had rented the cabin located at the entrance of the campground. (Be aware: the coordinates noted on the reservations.com website for the cabin are incorrect on GPS so we ended up lost and drove uphill to a remote area within the campground, on an unpaved dirt road.). The cabin was old and dirty, and was infected with mice, ants, and spiders. It was also located next to a big dumpster where all the trash from the campground was stored. Not what I had expected for $165 per night. Overall, the campground was okay, but we have camped at much better locations. There was a creek within the campground, but the water was cold. We spent one day hanging out at the "water slide" area which was located about 4 miles from the campground, down the mountain on HW190 on the way to Springville. The water slide area was a place with a large water hole for swimming and big rocks functioning like water slides. You will need to park along the highway then make a steep climb down by foot. Note: this climb may not be conducive for elders and small children. Once there though, I felt like we were in a mini water park resort, located outdoors near nature. Hanging out at the water slide was the best part of the trip. However, because of the crappy cabin and just average campground, we do not plan to ever return. read more

Need an escape from the hot summer months??? Head over to Wishon Campground for the icy cold waters of Tule River! The Central Valley was a hot 110 degrees and the temp considerably dropped down once we got to camp. At first we were disappointed at our site (#8) since there was no shade and it was only barren dirt for our tents. Then we found a shaded enclave under the canopy of trees enough to fit three 4-person tents. Then we found a trail that lead to the river for a private secluded water hole. There is a picnic table and a fire pit/grill combo. Unfortunately during some summer months, open fires are not permitted so YOU SHOULD BRING A PORTABLE PROPANE COOKING STOVE. I cannot stress that enough. The small city of Springville might have it, if not Porterville has a Big 5 you can visit. I already miss the sound of rushing water as we fell asleep. read more

Wishon Campground was amazing this week. Quiet, peaceful, beautiful little place. The campground host (I think her name was Nicole) was super hard-working and very nice. Bathrooms, though they're vault toilets, did not smell and had few bugs. She does a good job. Wednesday night was our last night and we were the only ones in the campground. Sites 20 and 21 are amazing as they overlook the water, but our spot, 25, was good too. Another good one was 28. Starting to get a little buggy, so don't forget the bug spray! Lower Coffee Camp was an amazing little swimming hole about 20-25 minutes away that the dog loved to swim in. Expect to pay $10 for day use there, except during the week. Driving up to the trail of 100 giants was a long haul. read more

No water available in the campground, although that wasn't mentioned online when we reserved it. Had to drive out 25 minutes each way to fill water, which was a bit of an inconvenience. Our site (27) was close to the river and it was very soothing to listen to the rushing water at night. Our site wasn't level and we had to walk down a bit from the car, however other sites around were better. Earlier sites (1-8) seem to offer more privacy, even though there was no crowd and we had no neighbors during the weekend. Toilets were clean and odor free. There is an interpretive nature trail inside the campground which is badly maintained with many fallen trees. There is another hiking trail right outside which was shaded and nice. There were many ticks where we stayed so beware if you travel with pets. The camp host was very friendly. read more

Wishon, given that the Complex fire was less than a year ago, is in decent shape. The campground itself tho is a disaster, largely due to the Forest Service's neglect and vandalism. Also the "Campground Host" was terrible. He showed up on my first day and said he was too tired to log me and give me my paperwork but not to worry he said he'd come by next morning. I waited until 10 AM and then went my way. Never saw him again. He either is incredibly lazy, is a stoner, has another job, doesn't give a shit, or all of the above. Trash was piled up in the campground to overflowing and the pit toilets were a mess. No paper and filthy. Sad! read more

This has to be one of my favorite, if not my FAVORITE camping spot ever. I wanted to go camping for my birthday and made the decision a bit late in the game for reservation. I could t find a single reservation open anywhere it seemed!! You can book up to 6 months in advance for most places and it seemed like everyone in California did that for the campgrounds I wanted to go. I ended up coming across Wishon and it had availability so I went with it. My last resort turned into a GEM. Amazing location right on the river, we could hear it rushing the entire time we were at the campsite. There were plenty of little areas to swim in and the water level was great. **Be Careful, There is still rushing water, rapids and slippery rocks but plenty of family friendly swimming spots that runs directly through the campground** Bring plenty of big spray, I can't say it enough. Tons of bugs but the campground is worth it. No running showers. It just bring a solar shower. Vault toilets so it will be a bit stinky and a lot of flies but the camp host was amazing and kept the facilities very clean. There are Bear boxes at every site and bear proof trash cans and recycling cans throughout the campground. If you need all amenities, this may not be the place for you but if you don't mind roughing it a little, you won't be disappointed!!! read more

Luckily, most of the campground and immediate surrounding area was spared from the recent fires, but the in the wider area the damage was significant. Much of the surrounding area is closed for public use for the foreseeable future. I would still recommend staying here because the campground itself is very pleasant. The camp hosts do a very good job of keeping the sites tidy, trash cans emptied, etc. I think the best sites are along the river: 20, 21, 23, 25, 27. My preference is in that order. read more

Wishon Campground is a little hidden gem in the midst of Sequoia National Forest. Not sure whether to complain or avoid pointing out the lack of signage indicating this site from State Route 190. It is tucked back away from the main road and offers plenty from the surrounding areas. There were only a handful of fellow campers at the end of the 4 mile trek along a fork of the Tule River. We were pleasantly surprised by the canopy of oak trees mixed in with big pines to give quite a shielded cover from the sun throughout the day...shielding some of the stars at night. The flow of the river masques the sound of any noise in the campground and most everyone didn't make much noise. We couldn't even hear our neighbor's generator the next site over. Overall plenty of room for our tent and nice privacy in between sites. It's a little harder to find scrap firewood within the campground to scavenge, but there's plenty in the surrounding area that's easy to pick up and use for a camp fire. It was our son's first camping trip ever. He enjoyed every minute and started crying when we had to leave. Our entire family had a great time. Restrooms were pretty clean, they picked up the trash on the second day we were there and had "reserved" signs with our name and site number before we got their. Easy access to nearby Lower and Upper Coffee campgrounds, several nice waterfalls, trails near the power plant and close to Camp Nelson for gas and supplies. A little over an hours drive to Trail of 100 Giants. Very nice. We will be definitely be back. read more

Swarms of mosquitos !!!! I have been camping many times and was totally prepared for bugs but the amount of mosquitos we encountered at this place was insane. Before we could even get out of our truck they were all over the Windows. We could barely walk thru the campground without covering our faces because these bugs were everywhere , it was miserable. And if you're thinking about using the bathroom, forget it those are full of bugs too. We reserved a spot for 3 nights and only stayed for one. The nature up there is beautiful but we will NEVER go back to this campground. Also be on the lookout for rattlesnakes... read more

I love this campground and have been coming for 8 years during summer time. When we had our daughter who is two now we decided to try renting the cabin, just easier to share the river and experience with a toddler. The cabin was horrible! There is no AC which is fine but no fans very hot and dirty cabin. The lady tried to clean it well, not her fault, but it looks creepy inside. For the price they are charging is not good. Def would be better to sleep in a tent. There were huge fire ants in the tub and most of the screens on Windows missing so bugs are all inside. We ended up only staying one night then left. I love this place but had to warn others not to ever rent the cabin big mistake!!! read more

If you are reading this review now and thinking of going up now, please be very careful going in the river. It is very fast moving at this time and dangerous. Two people were recently washed away by Lower Coffee Camp. Very sad but true. The bug situation described by other campers is not bad at all. Maybe it just depends on the time of year. A lot of people who come to this campground seem to have pets. It was a really nice relaxing camping trip for us. Our spot was big and ok except the water and trash was really close by so there are always people who are getting water or throwing away trash. The camp sites that face each other on the loops are actually quite close. You can see across to your neighbor's fire pit, etc. So that might be something you should consider when choosing a location. The vault toilets were not clean and the trash was overflowing. Maybe again, it had to do with the time of year. No sign of the chatty camphost. Most days, the camp hosts were not even there. Really grateful to Katherine Y. for giving the heads up about no cell phone service. Service actually goes out when you pass Success Dam. The road leading up to the campground is narrow and winding. Also, does not have a guard rail to stop you from tumbling down. The trip into town is pretty long because you will drive 4 miles on the extremely winding road so make sure you have lots of supplies before heading up. read more

We spent 3 days and two nights here, site 24. It was hard to find, because there is no signs telling you where the entrance is. We got lost twice and finally found someone on the road who gave us directions. There's ZERO cell reception, to me that was a plus, but just be warned. GPS will not work. There's TONS of mosquitoes and gnats, make sure to pack bug spray. The sites are very shady, tons of trees, so it was cold most of the day. Our neighbors found a rattlesnake under their rv. The bathrooms are generally clean but smelly. They have water spigots but you can't wash dishes or clothes there. You have to fill up a jug and take it back to your camp. We were allowed to have campfires as long as they were kept in the ring that is provided. The bear boxes are big, we fit two coolers and a plastic tub of dry food. The waterhole is not far from the campsite the water was so cold. There is fishing, but when we went we didn't see any fish. A lot of the other campers were driving down the mountain to catch any fish. The hiking trail is confusing, there's signs but none are clear as to where you are, easy to get lost. There's tons of thorns and foliage, wear pants or long socks. It does have access to the river though. Overall it was great, quiet and clean. read more

Beautiful campground, very tucked away. We have camped here with our 3 kids the past 2 summers (July) in our 18 ft. trailer. Some campsites are better than others depending on if you're camping with a large group or alone. During the week is very quiet but Friday night there was a huge family reunion taking up 6 campsites (we counted over 30 tents) and it sounded like a drunken rave well after midnight. But the mosquitos! Those things are like little evil vampire babies! By the 3rd day the mosquitos were so bad (and we were armed with heavy duty deet bug spray) we packed up and left. The spring or fall might be better. * The kids love exploring the stream. We have seen snakes, bear poop, butterflies, dragonflies, bats. * With the recent drought related fire restrictions there are no campfires allowed. * Trash and recycling are usually full/overflowing; be sure to bring extra trash bags. * Vault toilets - exactly as you would imagine. :) read more

Wishon campground is a great place to take your loved ones for the weekend! The campsites are well taken care of and restrooms are fairly cleaned. There's running water to use. This place offers great shade when it's hot. Nearby walking distance is a spot to swim or just to chill, but the water is freezing cold! If you drive like 5 mins down the road you'll spot areas where you can hike down to great swimming holes! Just park on the side of the road and hike down. Look for the trash cans which most likely is where the trail starts. Also during the summer there's tons of mosquitos and bees during the day, so go prepared with repellant. Also fires are prohibited during fire seasons so don't depend on camp fires for cooking or heating . For those who enjoy shooting firearms, your in luck! At the campground there's a fire road that'll take you up the hill, drive up the fire road and spot an open area that's where you can target shoot. Just make sure your at a far distance and shoot away from the campground . I would recommend you reserve online at reserveamerica. read more
