Today, returning from Logan Airport, I took a small side trip and visited one commemorative site that has always intrigued me. I am obsessed with history and absolutely believe that the past is a prologue because we still haven't managed to learn from our mistakes. I went to Danvers MA, near Route 128, and within this amazingly historical town, surrounded by meticulously preserved 17th and 18th century homes, with the aroma of fresh spring flowers, honeysuckle, and roses, lies the commemorative monument to the Witch Trials of 1692. For most of us. the Salem Witch trials (it happened in Danvers - old Salem Village, not the town of Salem, by the way) are but a distant footnote. A Halloween fable. An interesting and even humorous tale about witches and goblins and curses. When in fact, this monument marks a huge black eye in our history. When otherwise good people succumbed to panic and ideology, and committed unspeakable atrocities. 200 people accused. 150 people arrested and thrown in a dungeon. 19 people hanged. One tortured to death by being slowly pressed to death between two boulders. Even when the entire farce was over and the entire world knew that it was a grievous mistake, it was too embarrassing to acknowledge the error and five people remained in a dungeon until they died, forgotten by the world. Just because of the bad publicity it would generate. That's what happens when religion and government become tied in a symbiotic relationship of mutual support. Truth becomes subordinate to ideology disguised as faith. And somehow, for the ministers adjudicating the accusations, it was all directly tied to Scripture. We should all learn from this unfortunate event.

Not only the 19 hung as witches, and Giles Corey (who is listed as being tortured) but those who died in prison, including an infant child of one of the accused.

While I didn't enter the house, it was great to see the exterior and take photos from outside. The Ropes Mansion garden is free to enter, and is accessible through an arched pathway at the side of the mansion. The garden, while small, is beautiful and tranquil to walk through, complete with plenty of roses and a small pond. It's a great spot to take tourist photos as well. A must-visit for Hocus Pocus fans!

Do you remember in the movie when Dani and Max are outside the mansion just staring up at it in awe? That was me. The infamous mansion where Allison lives is a sight that can't be missed! It is located in a residential neighborhood at the very end of the street, but it is worth the quick detour away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist area. We came later in the evening so were only able to get a couple of night time shots - we wanted to get one of us in front of it, but a tour group was coming through at the same time and we didn't want to be too distracting. I'm not sure if they ever do tours inside, I believe the Ropes Mansion is owned by the Essex Museum, but the outside was definitely enough for me. If you're a fan of Hocus Pocus, this is a must stop!

There are lots of "stories" but the history reveals a movement that took Women and Men, young and old, mostly by hanging (not burned at the stake as sometimes is portrayed) though there was the one older gentleman who was pressed. A docent told us a bit about him and his refusal to plead which resulted in the "pressing", a legal process at the time. It occurred in a relatively short window of time with several individuals being hung on the same days. Each person is memorialized with a stone ledge and I took the opportunity to speak each one's name. Looked like folks were also leaving flowers and other tokens. If your time is limited, I would make this a priority.

Women were mistreated during this horrible period. Glad we were able to visit the Salem Witch Trials Memorial to pay our respect to those who had their lives taken because of the fear of witchcraft. It's great to know they dedicated this area to the memory of those who lost their lives at such a young age. If you get a chance to visit Salem, don't miss the opportunity to visit this somber spot known as the Salem Witch Trials Memorial.
