With the Grain is my Saturday morning ritual. The coffee and baked goods are amazing. I stock up for the week with an oatmeal sandwich loaf (awesome for our Saturday lunch grilled cheese sandwiches), baguettes (they make for fantastic French toasts), croissant bread (which my daughter devours in her school lunches) and often something sweet as a treat - the brownies, bee sting bars and cinnamon rolls are always a hit! The staff is super friendly and I appreciate the loyalty cards for coffee and bread. The bakery itself is small but so quaint being in an old historical house. Visiting Guelph for a family get together and found this wonderful little bakery through Yelp. Great variety of pastries with daily rotations to mix things up and provide a surprise or two. Tried a strawberry filled donut (excellent), a honey glazed yeast donut (very good), and a cardamom bun (good - dough seemed a little overworked). Americano was standard good. Parking is challenging, so be prepared to drive around and then walk a bit. No inside or sidewalk seating as far as I could tell, so take out only. Parks nearby to enjoy the food and coffee if you don't live in the neighborhood. Definitely worth the minor inconveniences. read more

Whenever I'm in Guelph I have to go to With the Grain!! Although their portions can be small, their food never fails to amaze me. It is so natural and you can tell there is no added salt, or other artificial substances that don't need to be there. Their seating area has a very cute and welcoming vibe that makes everyone feel so comfortable. I would recommend their white bean & kale pesto sandwich (pro tip= add some chicken to make it more filling) and their breakfast burrito! Homey/hippie/chill vibe with creaky wood floors, painted out, distressed chairs, people catching up, some reading the newspaper, others on their laptops, and a waiter who calls people, "Friends". :) That basically sums up WtG! Coffee is GREAT! I believe there is at least 3 different brews to choose from which is roasted locally by Planet Bean. I had the Medium and one of the Bolds (not Grainer Gold), and both were nice 'n rich in flavour! None of that watered down stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed the BATH (Bacon Avocado Tomato Havarti, $8.50) sandwich on homemade bread. Bread made all the difference! Homemade Sausage & Eggs ($9.50) were good too, although I found the sausage a bit overly seasoned and not sure what oil was used to fry the homefries in, but I wasn't too fond of the taste. Again, homemade touches did make a difference: bread, sausage, seasoning on homefries, etc. Service was unpretentious and very polite. Parking: Small-ish lot behind actual restaurant. Yes. As everyone else has said, the food here is great. But the other aspects of the place really take away from food quality. For one thing, it was unbelievably noisy, which I know is not the fault of the restaurant itself, but it make it very difficult to have a conversation with my friend. More importantly however, is the service. I have never felt like such a burden to a server before. I had to go up to the bakery doors to ask for more ketchup, and when I did, I found her talking to the other servers. When I asked for more ketchup, she looked annoyed that she had to stop her conversation to get it. She spent as little time at our table as possible, and I don't think I saw her smile once. Also of note here, the bakers and food prep people do not appear to wear hair nets. I know at every food prep place I've ever worked that is extremely important, especially with girls with long hair. For some reason, they don't wear them here and it really makes me wonder what other corners are being cut. read more

Holy CRAP the prices are out of control here. As someone who lived in Guelph for many years, I used to enjoy the deliciousness of With the Grain. It used to be pretty stellar. The last time my friend (a Guelph native), boyfriend and I went, we were super disappointed. Prices are outrageous, and the food just isn't worth it. My friend's veg chili had semi-raw veg in it. The carrots were hard. The chili was average at best. I got the BATH, which I usually love. Sadly, the lettuce was slimy and wilted, which ruined the entire sandwich. My boyfriend ordered what was basically an Egg McMuffin, except he paid about three times the price. What a shame. read more

Okay, I have to admit this place is like chocolate covered crack. Literally. It is that addictive. Everything that I've ever had here is incredibly uber delicious. To start off the breads are fantastic, the baked goodies scrumptious, the squares insanely good... that's just the baked confections. They also make delicious sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. I came here for lunch today from out of town because of all the good reviews I read on Yelp. Also, it has a parking lot, which saves me from embarrassing myself while trying to parallel park downtown. Both my friend and I had today's special: roast pork panini with Brie cheese, arugula, rosemary mustard, and cranberry sauce on flax bread. The bread was fantastic - as I expected since it's made fresh at their bakery right across the street! The flavours in the sandwich were spot on, however my only complaint was that the pork was sliced quite thickly, making it hard to eat. We went here for brunch today. We both ordered the eggs with bacon. The eggs tasted very fresh and were cooked a perfect over easy, the dark yellow yolk running everywhere. The order came with four huge pieces of toast, fresh and buttered, served with homemade raspberry jam. Delicious! The bacon (3) slices was good, my boyfriend was disappointed in the small serving of pea meal bacon with his. Potatoes? Not good. Overcooked and not seasoned. (Not because there isn't enough seating - it's just that popular!). The coffee is great and there are vegan options available. First the restaurant: 3 stars- The food and service was good. I had a cappuccino and roast chicken sandwich. Both good if not exceptional. Prices on the high side but not outrageous. I would have rated this place higher except I don't like the ambiance . It's extremely noisy even though I had a corner table. Seems popular with parents of young screaming children who like to throw their toys on the wooden floor. The chairs and tables are also wooden so maybe echo the noise. Parking is tight. I arrived around 9am and had to line up on the road for parking for a few minutes. No line up to get a table. I went through a bit of a food renaissance recently, and this is one of my favourite discoveries. With the Grain is a bit of a hike if you're walking from downtown, but I can promise it's worth it. Heck! It even gives you that right amount of anticipation for their tasty tasty treats. They bake all of their own desserts, breads, etc., and all of them are fantastic. Their desserts are unique (beestings -- shortbread squares with a honey based topping and slivered almonds) and done to perfection. You can walk in there and get a great lunch (soups, sandwiches, and more), or some pie/squares/scones/etc/etc/etc for a gathering. Want to grab a treat and a coffee and sit down to enjoy it? With the Grain is located in a beautiful old house with a really charming comfortable atmosphere and plenty of seating. In addition, they serve Planet Bean brews, locally roasted fair trade coffee also based in Guelph. Their staff is super friendly and helpful. The place does get a bit nuts though, especially on weekends, so be prepared to brave a crowd if you go during peak times. read more

I've had the BATH sandwich from here... and like other Yelpers have attested, it is so delectable! Bacon, avocado, tomato and havarti on freshly made bread, with a spicy mayo spread. I tried to recreate the sandwich at home (made my spicy mayo with sriricha) but it wasn't the same. I've also tried the espresso brownies from here... amazing! My brother-in-law gets his coffee fix from here daily, wish I lived closer so I could go more often. read more

Love this place. My addiction is regularly fed by my mother-in-law, who buys me thir lemon squares when she goes in for her weekly bread-CSA pickups - they evidently have some sort of super-cool program where you can subscribe and get their breads on a schedule over at the bakery part. Genius. Sandwiches are good, full of nice things, vegetables are ripe and tasty, seasonings are good and balanced. The kitchen is not afraid of a little salt, which I so enjoy - some things are just better with salt, hey? I've eaten here several times in the past and it's always been fine but the last time I was there my friend ordered the tofu scramble and it was off-the-chart salty. When we complained about it they tried to appease us with some raita yogurt (which should have been included in the plate but wasn't) as if to neutralize the spiciness but that wasn't the problem - it was simply way too salty! We asked that the meal be replaced with another but they were not offering to accommodate us and that it was our taste buds that were off! After we insisted we eventually go the meal replaced with another but felt that we had to ask too much to get it and they were obviously not happy to do it. This place is probably in the top 3 best breakfast places I've been to so far in North America (out of over 250). Very creative menu. I had the curry tofu scramble. Unreal. What a unique and successful dish! I also ordered a pancake to try. Delicious and wholesome. You eat here and it's like you're adding years to your life, everything is healthy and most of the items are (if I'm correct) local/organic. Was in town for an appointment and asked for a recommendation to grab a quick lunch. I was recommended 'With the grain". Had actually spotted it on my way too. Looked adorable, quaint converted house with the sister bakery establishment across the street. Was also told that the vegetarian chilli was a must. Well, this is why taste is so subjective!!!!!! Has anybody told the cooks here about sofritto, a base or jamiroquai to develop a stew. I'm guessing that their's is composed of jumbo cans of diced tomatoes, pinto beans, a few diced carrots and an overload of cumin. Not used to eating raw canned tomatoes, warmed up. No flavour development or cooked for that matter. Do they take it for granted that some patrons might, just might, have the 101 on stews and beyond. It was disgusting!!!! Saving grace, that bread! Delicious! The chilli came with a very thick slice.The sandwiches looked lovely and the salads were ok. Ordered the quinoa and it was good, although a little bland. Service was very good. Service tends to be on the slower side, but the food makes up for the wait. I strongly recommend the Breakfast Burrito with avocado. One problem I do find is that I have attempted multiple times to order take out but no one was available to answer the phone. Charming breakfast and brunch spot. Everything is very fresh, and of course organic. The coffee's and smoothies are great. They have weekly specials, in addition to their regular menu, so that's nice. While the only thing spectacular about their veggie chili is the size of the bowl, he breakfast sandwich was very good.
