I mean, it's absolutely fantastic. Just when you thought you couldn't be happier, you're walking out with a bottle of Tideview's Sparkling Pear. This is huge for the Dartmouth crowd, y'all.

Once you walk in through the two doors, you're left with a small army of men sporting white butcher coast, more than likely covered with blood and a knife in hand... Lets not kid ourselves, this is a "meat chop shop" after all.Honestly, I was a bit alarmed my first time; that all changed after I saw the boards on the walls with selection and prices BUT, if you want to be able to get exactly what you want, the thickness you want it without getting the feeling that you're inconveniencing the staff or leave your first born as a deposit, well this is the place for you. It's not about having this pretty decor with a nice glass showcase to choose from. Their selection is quite extensive.... Beef, veal, lamb, pork, chicken, emu, bison, wild boar, and the list goes on depending on the seasonality of the product you are looking for. Here's how it works: You go in, let them know what you want. They will then go grab the whole animal and/or partial animal (dead of course) and say: how thick? Bone on or off? etc Meat quality is impeccable, prices are great and the staff will always make you laugh. If you live in the city, take the drive, trust me you won't regret it!

It's so nice to have a spot that serves as a baby-grocery store, offering great local produce and delightful items, like cheeses from Nova Scotia and grains from New Brunswick. They also sell goods like maple syrup, frozen local and organic berries, as well as a variety of meats. You can even stop by for lunch, as they have sammies and salads, as well as coffee, tea and sweets. I love biking over in the summer and stocking up on apples. One of my favorite things to buy is their raw milk cheese from Quebec - it's a real treat, and although it only comes in small blocks it really goes the distance with its rich and flavorful taste. I support this business' mandate of offering local and mainly organic food year round, while fostering a very nice community space. You should swing by and pick up some yummy consumables today!

In a cross section done in the recent Coast 'Green Halifax' guide you can see that buying basic items such as: Speerville Mills oatmeal, apples, eggs, butternut squash and chicken-- can be found cheaper at Local Source Market, or at least on par with the Halifax Farmer's Market. I actually have to say I look forward to seeing him now as well, cause he makes it fun, and a good shopping experience to come back to when you make the day , and they make yours. You can find fabulous deals on foods, and fruits and vegetables every day, and last night they had spinach on - which was great, and so much more decently priced that our conventional Superstore, and Sobey's. There's also a wall where there is a selection of DVDs available, and a counter with home-baked fudge (which by the way is absolutely decadent!) Any time I'm back in Sackville during the summer, I always make it a point to stop by Avery's for a strawberry frozen yogurt. (Some days it isn't in stock, in which case I happily settle for the Blueberries and Cream variety). The thing to keep in mind, is that the ice cream is VERY popular here, and so you should be prepared for a line-up on hot days!!

The first time I came in I was energized by all the hustling and bustling in this place. I was also surprised that it was smaller than I expected. Then I realized there were other parts of the building that weren't "store front". We usually come here to stock up on steaks, ribs or whatever meat they have on sale that week. If you're into raw food for your pooch they've got that covered too. Another thing I've noticed is their cashiers are very efficient, aka fast! Walmart and Superstore should send their cashiers here for training. If I really have to be picky, I'd have to say that this is not a place to bring your children. We can only come when one of us stays in the van with our young children. For one, their shopping carts are small. And secondly, this is a very busy place with limited floor space. Also the parking lot on the weekends is a zoo. But even with these "hindrances" we still manage to buy groceries here.

The fruit arrived every morning - you knew it was fresh because there was no place to store anything. Now it has found a home in a real building a couple of hundred metres from the traffic lights just off the highway - the lights weren't there when this place started. So much has changed in Fall River - but this little place still serves up the best local farm produce. It has the right feel to me with big farmers crates out front filled with melons, cabbage, apples, etc. It still feels like a farmers market as opposed to the multitude of former markets that have morphed into stores. On the real side (not the down side) is that it is so connected to the local produce that when melon season is over - its over - no more mellons - which I miss - but I am getting distracted. Fortunately The Vegetorium is now just entering the apple season so I have lots to look forward to from this little place by the side of the road.
