I work in the healthcare industry, and similarly to those who are in law, time is always very limited, schedules (even large swaths of one's schedule) are very likely to change at the drop of a hat - despite how hectic my and Mr. Raie's schedules are/ever were, he has always been highly professional, effective, and knowledgeable. There were two instances where either the timing of proceedings was very limited (I was previous out of the country and when returning to the States, was informed of an upcoming court date). Even though he was not getting paid, Mr. Raie very graciously took time to speak with me personally, after hours, and helped to device a suitable course of action. Mr. Raie went so far as to reach out to several of his personal contacts in order to assure my legal needs were being met. This man is very helpful and his services were always very reasonable in price no matter what firm he was working at. There have been multiple occasions where I was leaving the hospital late (later than 10pm), and still Mr. Raie made himself available, never charged me for a freakin phone call nor text message nor email (which is basically unheard of in 2023/2024 when talking about the legal industry). Legal stuff is ALWAYS expensive, but you really get good "bang for your buck" if you will, with Mr. Raie. After a federal indictment I had a long road to hoe and that also meant hiring an attorney. This was my first foray into such a world as this. I did not know strategy, I did not understand the system, the sentencing guidelines or anything about how to create the best possible result for myself. Over the course of approximately three years I worked with Steven LaCheen and David Shapiro, their office staff and even their attorney children. I did not anticipate that the best defense would be that during that time (I was under their counsel) they would actually require that I become a better human being. They did this not for altruistic reasons but mostly because - certainly in my guilty plea - the best defense was the truth. Even though we agreed on this fact early, how the truth is told is a delicate process. The reason this is, is because many people work to manipulate the system. It's critical that we thought like a judge, thought like a prosecutor and even thought like a reformed criminal. It was never about bullshit; rather our story was as real as we could make it. The discussion did not always go the direction that I wanted it to, the tasks I was given to complete we're not always the ones I wanted to do, however by the time I stood in front of a judge I had provided them with as comprehensive and yet somehow simple a package anyone could hope to present. My attorneys had created a person that in their words "a judge would be crazy to send to jail"; I say my attorneys did it but really I did. That is the magical silver lining of all of this.
