I applied for a new visa for China two weeks ago, but still had a reviewing documents message on the consulates site. My wife and I submitted are applications at the same time but she got her visa a week ago. Very nervous because we have a trip to China planned in three weeks. I found China Travel Services and called to see if they would handle my case since I am going on a domestic trip and would need to have my passport mailed to me in another city. I went to their office, now located in Chinatown SF, and spoke to Apple. She was very understanding and understood my needs. I left my passport with her and she instructed me to contact her when the status changed to submit my passport. Three days later I got the message to submit my passport and immediately contacted Apple. She said they would submit and will mail it to me when returned. One week later it was in the mail and returned to me with a new Chinese visa. Very appreciate the help and would recommend this service. read more

This is honestly the worst tour company, you could possibly pick to travel anywhere. I wouldn't even ask them to give me directions to the restroom in their office. The general appeal of a company like this is to have an ally in your primary tongue to show you around other places that you would be traveling to. Ideally, when situated in the heart of San Francisco where the Chinese population is souring, you would think that this would be a great for your parents as they travel during their silver years. Not the case -- at all. Don't get me started on the insane up-charge for excursions. (Example: you want to see the Duomo in Florance, Italy, for example) and tickets are 17 Euro per person. Well, if you book the excursion though China Travel Services, they'll charge you $75 to book it. The only other place where you the service fees and up-charge are that high is if you were to book this through organized crime. But let's put that aside for a second, because this is a business. It's not uncommon to be ripped off. Now, let's imagine you booked said tour 2 months ago. Fast forward to, I dunno, the day before you're to fly out, and they tell you that they could only book some of the tickets, and you now have to find your own. Wow! This perfectly sucks. How about this? You're at the airport and you literally about to board your flight, and you have to hear from another member of your tour group that they, again, didn't book a ticket for you to an excursion the day that you land? You might as well just tell me that you're flying to Hell itself and they forgot your luggage. read more

Be aware - must call to be sure they're available before showing up. I did not use their services but showed up during hours and no one was there. They were at least communicative . Also their price is higher than wayway travel which is what I used. I read the owners somewhat rude reply. 1. When I showed up, during business hours, NOONE was there so no, you are not correct. Awesome people and service. I was in desperate need of a China VISA for a family of 4. I'm from Las Vegas. I researched for a China Agency in San Francisco, because I'm zoned for the San Francisco (please check which state zone you are listed for. You can web search under China Consulate Zone). My trip was coming close on May 31st and it was a Memorial Day weekend. What caught my attention was that they were open 7 days a week from 9am to 6pm, excluded the major holidays. Also majority of the China Travel Agency in SF on yelp was closed on the weekend and closed early. So I called Sweet Ruan on her direct line and left a message. She called me right back. Told her my situation that I need a next day/24 hour rushed VISA for 4. I had only Sunday, Monday(memorial day), Tuesday and Wednesday cause we were flying out on Thursday to China. So she told me to text her snap shot of the paper work, photos, plane tickets and hotel reservations (was a little skeptical but I was desperate, and there reviews was all good review on yelp). First thing she text back is my photo was to big (passport photos 2"x 2"). She told me to get a China VISA photo which was 48mm x 33mm. I went to Costco with the photo requirement paper and a ruler to measure the photo and the Head measurements "Please follow the requirements to the T". So I text Sweet Ruan with the new and old photos just to see the differences. Sweet Ruan told me it looks good. So on Saturday she listed things to bring. China VISA paperwork with photo, copy of your birth certificate, copy of your passport and license (both on same paper) for kids you can use school ID's, passports, plane tickets, hotel booking and your tour agenda. One thing I love about Sweet Ruan, she was on vacation and still helped me out. She told me she was going to refer me to Vicky Wu, since she was on vacation. So on Sunday I flew from Vegas to SF to drop off my paper work. I met up with Vicky Wu. She was so kind enough that she double check my paper work and found couple errors. So I had to redo some of it. Vicky told me everything looks good and she'll keep me posted. If everything is good you can come by on Wednesday after 5pm to pick it up. Also Sweet Ruan was keeping in touch with me while she was on vacation. Monday came it was Memorial Day and the SF China consulate was closed came Tuesday Vicky called me first thing and said her co-worker took the passports and dropped it off and she called me back in the afternoon saying no issue from co-worker. Wednesday Vicky called around lunch time saying our VISA was approved and would be ready after 5pm (Thank you Jesus). Long story short I flew back to SF from Vegas to pickup my VISA on Wednesday afternoon. I was amazed with Vicky Wu and Sweet Ruan for expediting our China VISA. We got back on 17th of November, it was 12 day tour and It was an amzing experience. They kept all the promises and about meals went beyond. As per original plan only some meals were included, they provided all meals on many days and some on most. Ofcourse, brekfast was included everyday. China Tour and China Travel services are the same and they have a page for each so you might need to check out both pages. One couldn't beat the price of $1.7k with flights, hotels, some meals and entrance to major attractions so keeping my eye on the price, here are a few comments -May Lin told me the 4 hotels were all very well located and close to city centers. When I mapped the hotels on a map and went back to her with this information, she tried to change the story by saying that the concept of city center in China did not exist. This is NOT true - it does exist. Regardless, the hotels are VERY FAR from city centers, especially in Beijing. - there are four touristic places listed on the stops as 1. Silk Factory 2. Green Tea Plantation 3. Pearl Factory 4. Jade Museum These are mandatory shopping stops which are not listed as such in the itinerary. I had read some reviews before and when I asked May Lin about them she reluctantly said they were shopping stops of 45 mins each. In truth, here is how much time our group spent in each 1. Silk Factory 2 hrs 2. Green Tea Plantation 2 hrs 3. Pearl Factory 1 hr 4. Jade Museum (it's not a museum) 1h30 mins If you add 4 hours in travel time, you are spending 1/4 of your days in these stops. During stops 3 and 4, a couple of people in our group expressed their disinterest and wanted to stay sleeping in the bus. Lo and behold, the tour guides MADE them leave the bus and join the group. Going to Suzhou was a waste of our previous time that could have been spent in Beijing where we did not even get a chance to get to the Temple of Heaven. I feel we were taken there just to go to the silk store. The lunches were all in places out of the way and not that pleasant nor hygienic but then again, we paid $1.7k. THe only good ones were the Hutong lunch and the Peking Duck. This brings me to the next point: the itinerary says, " For dinner you'll enjoy a Peking Duck feast with a Kung Fu Show". This is not true either - it is a mandatory Kung Fu show where all the tourists have to make a stop at and after the show, a short drive to have Peking Duck (1 of 2 good meals). Again, we were not taken to the Temple of Heaven and instead to a KungFu show where 50% of the people fell asleep?! Seriously.... I hate being lied to. This trip is not positioned as a shopping tour. My guesses are either that the shops belong to China Tour or China Tour partners with the shops. I am giving it 2 stars because 1. I had fun despite all the sketchy stuff going on and 2. for Charlie the tour guide. Now you know! read more

Well, the votes are in and the 5 stars have held up extremely well, this tour company has CUSTOMER SERVICE at the top of the list and the folks they select for their tours. Chinatour is associated with China Travel Service and we were impressed with the personal care of all of the folks. We had Michael as our tour guide in Beijing, experienced, personable, engaging, honest, accommodating, and most of all ADVOCATE. We have been on tours before in Taiwan and China and if your tour guide is not advocating .for you whether at the hotel or during bargaining with vendors, you don't have that "good feeling". Since we stayed at another hotel prior to the actual tour, he double, tripled checked to make sure that transpo to his hotel for the start of the tour was made correctly. Calling and keeping tabs on the driver. In short, he was incredible! He wasn't able to go with us to Xian, but Helen in Xian was really good and although she was able to only spend 1-1/2 days with us. She advocated so well with the hotel and made sure that since we were leaving apart from the group the last day that we had secured choices of getting to the Xian airport. Had a minor glitch that hotel didn't get our one night extension and Helen took care of it. Then there's May Lin, we kept in contact with her and as her normal superior self, she immediately answered any small questions we had with tipping, etc. We definitely will get together with her to de-brief. Oh, BTW the others who worked with May ( who turned out to have all PHD's but young folks)all appreciated the incredibly quick turnaround from May. I recently had a frustrating experience trying to buy airline tickets for my family of 6 to fly to Taiwan for the summer. Due to the ages of our children and differing return flights for myself and my husband, we were unable to book the flights online. Christy was very helpful and nice from our first phone conversation. Although we had to pay a little more than the airline website prices, Christy's efficiency, excellent communication and sincerity made the process more bearable. This year I was counting on them, and they COMPLETELY dropped the ball. They gave me the wrong form to fill out, they were incommunicado for most of the day when I told them I was under urgent time constraints, and to top it off, their staff can be VERY rude. We just got back from China on a 12-day tour by China Tour on Nov 25, 2013. We bought the tour through Groupon.com for $1.7k/person. Before we left from US, we were concerned about the quality of the tour guide and hotels because of the low price. However, trust me... I can tell you that you don't have to worry about any of that. China Tour has put together an amazing tour with top-notch hotels (4-5 stars ratings) and excellence tour guides with good command of English language. All 4-5 stars hotels in all 5 cities that we visited have awesome buffet breakfast, buffet with variety of Asian/Western food. Included lunches and dinners are (of course) Chinese food, (you are in China, so this is no brainer)... These meals ranges from very good to average, but they are definitely not as greasy and salty as we were expecting. We are also Asian, so Chinese food is not a big deal for us. However, there are quite a few Westerners in our group, and having Chinese food everyday for more than week did not go well with them ... we managed to get through the tour though. YES!!! there will be 3-4 shopping stops on the tour as indicated by others, but this is also expected for us and everyone else in our group. We have taken many organized tours in many countries, and they all included shopping stops. If you evaluate the qualities of the hotels that you are getting on this tour (again, they are all 4-5 stars hotels), you'll see why China Tour need subsidies from these shopping stops so that they can provide deep discount to the buyers. Overall, we are very impressed with the quality of the hotels, the service of the tour guides, and how cheap we had paid for our 12-day 5-city China tour. We definitely recommend China Tour to everyone. read more

Did lots of research before planing 35 day tour of China most places (esp. similar names) had bad reviews so was VERY suspect. Spent numerous weeks working with Alex, and made numerous customizations, flights, hotels, cruise etc. Trip was PERFECT and far exceed expectations. Food was plentiful, shows/tours were all quality, transportation and logistics was 100%. Weather was a little hot, but service and itinerary was great. Tour guides were all professional (some more personable than others) but never had hand out for tips etc. Hotels were all excellent except for smaller towns, but better than expected. Compare their prices and you'll see they are the largest and most reliable. We met other travelers who got cancelled on at last minute, so they joined ours. We considered doing it ourselves, but glad we didn't. THey guys offer the best price and best service. Just becareful every other travel company is called china travel. They guys are BBB and California State attorney registered. read more

We had a mixed experience with ChinaTour.com. It was easy for us to build a custom itinerary for our trip to beijing with a day trip to Xi'an to see the Terra Cotta Warriors. They handled getting our visa's for us, although they didn't tell us their address had changed until we had already sent our passports. We were able to call FedEx and pay to reroute them, and everything worked out. They booked us at the Ritz Carlton in Beijing which was excellent. The breakfast there was also very good. Our tour guide was very friendly, but not very knowledgeable about the places we went, and seemed more interested in talking on the phone than working with us. At the Great Wall, not only did she not tell us anything about the wall, she made us wait in the heat for more than 15 minutes while she talked on the phone. Our meals in Beijing were mostly at mediocre restaurants (besides the hotel breakfast). Our day trip to Xi'an started with our guide not being at the hotel on time. We left without her, and then picked her up on the way to the airport. Our flight to Xi'an was cancelled, and it was very hard for our guide to reach anyone at ChiaTour to try and deal with it. I ended up going to a different airline and figuring it out. Our guide in Xi'an was excellent, and we learned more from him about the great wall than we had from the guide who took us there. It was great to see the Terra Cotta Warriors, and our guide was very knowledgeable about them. There were no problems with our flight home. However, when we arrived back in Beijing around 10:30pm, there was no one there to meet us. We looked around and waited for about 15 minutes and then took a cab to our hotel. Our guide called us after midnight and confirmed that we made it back. She said she had been at the airport for hours. I suppose she must have been at the wrong terminal. Once home, I contacted ChinaTour about a refund for the airport ride that never happened, and they said since it was just a misunderstanding, there would be no refund. To summarize, parts of their services were very good, parts were ok, and parts were very bad. All in all, I would use someone else hoping for better results. read more

I had a horrible experience with the manager, Sweet. When purchasing our tickets she was extremely friendly but when certain circumstances came up and I needed to change my flight, she was no help whatsoever. She told me to call the airline myself, which the airline said they could not do anything and had to go through my travel agency. When I called Sweet once again she said that I could not switch my flight, but one week later I received her call stating that she will try to switch it. It dragged on to a point where I had to buy another returning flight. DO NOT book anything from Sweet. She's out to get your money! read more

My wife and I are huge travel buffs and just returned from 10 days in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. We had a WONDERFUL and FANTASTIC time in China, and I highly recommend this travel company for booking your tour. We actually found a Groupon for the trip last year and ran into problems redeeming it the first time around (you MUST call them right away to book, don't wait too much longer after purchasing voucher). The gentlemen Peter told us we'd have to pay extra to confirm our flights at that time. Once we expressed concern over this, May Lin stepped in and helped make everything right, and I give tons of kudos to her! The tour guides were awesome, especially Frank who was extremely hilarious! I wouldnt trust @Andrea V's review too much. Yes, there are some mandatory planned stops at some of the government owned and operated stores (Jade, Pearl, Silk, etc.), and some sales pitching at the traditional Chinese medicine and green tea providers, but why bitch about it? It's no different than many other organized tours in our country who make deals with local merchants. The trip is cheap, extremely cheap...because it is subsidized by the Chinese government to help boost their tourism industry. If I can go on a 65%-70% discounted trip to China for 10 days while seeing some of the most magical and richest historical landmarks in the world, eating 4 and 5 course breakfasts (all), lunches (3 or 4) and dinners (2), staying in true 4 and 5 star hotels, seeing the real Shanghai acrobats on the 4th row, and covering 4 major cities in the country all under the included price, then I can deal with going to a few government-run stores to buy a few souvenirs. People that can't see the good in this deal are subpar human beings who are a disgrace to truly dedicated and respectful American travel hobbyists. My only cons were: The smog was pretty bad in Beijing, most all of the time was scheduled and structured (very little "free" time), and there was a bit of discouragement on the part of the tour guide when we expressed a desire to forego the "optional" activity riding the rickshaws and having lunch with a Chinese family in Beijing. Overall, it seemed like ChinaTour.com was generally uncomfortable with the tour participants deviating at all from the plan. If they really want you to pay for the optional trip, they shouldn't make it optional. But, on the plus side, you won't ever have that feeling of being nickle and dimed to death, which is common touring other places (especially in the U.S.). The trip was fantastic, and ChinaTour.com should be lauded for their service and provided value. I'd do it again and recommend it to others in a heartbeat.
