WMEX began as a radio station in 1931. It is famous for being one of the very first stations to broadcast Kasey Casem's American Top 40 back in 1970. They are also known having legendary DJ Artie Woo Woo Ginsburg at the helm. They also broke the record Maggie May by Rod Stewart which was supposed to be the B side of Reason to Believe. They flipped the record and it became a monster #1 hit & catapulted Rod's career. WMEX was extremely popular in the 70's battling with WRKO for top position with their Top 40 format. Sadly it turned into an all talk format & other variations later on over the years, Now the WMEX THAT EVERYBODY LOVED IS BACK! They're playing the greatest songs of all time from the 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's If you Love Casey Kasem's Classic American Top 40 then you will Love Jeff Lawrence's Countdown. This guy is Unbelievable with all the detailed research he piles into each show. Jeff provides all kinds of information you probably have never heard of before about songs. Casey is Great as he counted down the Top 40 songs of the 70's & 80's as they appeared on the National Charts from Billboard magazine. Jeff does a slightly different take. He counts down the Top 25 songs in Boston from the 1960's & 70's. Jeff gives you inside info about some of your favorite tunes. Jeff also features Retro News - what was going on locally & nationally. There's also Retro Sports too with info about Sports Teams in their glory days. There's also Retro Commercials. Then he takes it one step beyond that & tells you what the price of gas, milk & eggs were at that time. What hip & trendy clothing was on sale at various department stores that no longer exist. Imagine gas for 29 cents, Hot Pants ( before Daisy Dukes) are on sale for women & Edwardian suits with flared pants for men. He tells you the price of an apartment & homes in various cities. He also tells you what Cartoons were popular on Saturday Mornings, TV Shows & what Movies were playing at the Drive-In. Jeff doesn't just play the music but gives you a living snapshot of what life was like Back in the Day. It feels like a time capsule & puts the music in perspective not just playing a song on the radio. Even if you didn't grow up in Boston , you will totally enjoy the show because of all the tid bits of info you never knew about records. It's upcycled from a recycle of yesterday for today. It's not your typical Old School show. Every weekend it's a different month week & year The same Show airs 4 different times on the weekends. Saturdays 9-11 AM Eastern Time 6-8 AM Pacific & 8-10 PM Eastern Time 5-7 PM Pacific Sundays 9-11 AM Eastern Time 6-8 AM Pacific & 5-7 PM Eastern Time 2-4 PM Pacific. WMEX broadcasts on 1510 AM in Boston & on 101.1 FM in Quincy & on the web @ wmexboston.com. They are also on your Tune In App or ask your smart speaker to play WMEX BOSTON. They are also selling Retro Merch on their Boston website too. I do have a minor recommendation for improvement for the show. Jeff talks a little fast because he's trying to cram all that into a 2 hour format. I wish they would expand the show to 3 hours & a little bit slower on the talking & expand to the Top 30 or 40. That would be PERFECT! It was a used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded.
