Tune in and you'll be greeted by Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, or mid nineties grunge and slight post grunge rock. Maybe if you're particularly unlucky you'll get something like Fred Durst yelling to himself. Now this isn't really their fault. I mean look what's out there right now. Evanesence? Mushroom head? Linkin Park? My Chemical Romance? None of these bands are really, well, good. Not to say that Alice In Chains is the best music ever created, but there was more universal like and overlap to that than listening to FALLOUT BOY. And I think that's why they haven't changed. 'BCN (as we call it here in Bahstahn) is still trying to cater to the 35 year old commuter from Quincy to the 15 year old high school student from Newton, to the 23 year old college guy. And rock's gotten too polarized for that. I used to listen to the DIAMOND DAVID LEE ROTH show back when that complete lack of funny was on the air and I couldn't believe it. Capitol try though, guys. I *love* folk, and I love independent radio- so I should be an avid WUMB listener, but I'm not- and…read moreif they can't capture MY listenership, then who the heck is listening?! Let me start at the beginning- there's a lot I like about WUMB. They play a lot of indie singer-songwriters (and some established ones), and they're remained true to their folk roots. They are not overrun by corporate nonsense. The downside: WUMB feels REALLY old. I have no empirical evidence for this, but my gut is that the average age of listeners is somewhere in the 50-65 bracket. While I appreciate that they have remained faithful to the WUMB formula, and have refused to sell out (i.e. I hate the new WERS and really miss the days when ERS had actual SHOWS!), I also can't help but wonder if their staunch adherence to a very old formula isn't going to eventually kill the station. Why not have a few DJs who seem a bit younger? WHy not invite more community participation? They just seem like they need a bit of fresh air for the next decade...

WERS and WUMB are heavily formatted, WZBC has taken the cutting-edge niche, and WBUR has sold the students out for the spotlight of NPR. Which leaves the best good ol' fashioned small-time college station in the area, a helter-skelter mess of students and locals with often no prior experience playing just about whatever comes to mind at the moment, or screwing around on the air just because someone is letting them. It is radio at its finest -- unscripted, flawed, and spontaneous, with as much beauty in the bad moments as good. WMFO preaches the freeform philosophy, which I sometimes think means "we don't have the time or interest to coordinate any of this," making fertile ground for unpredictability. I am a WMBR devotee first and foremost, and WZBC has button #2 on my dial. But when the undeniable earnestness of either isn't doing it for me, I tune to 91.5 and the great majority of the time, I get what WMFO is best at -- fun. Straight-up, amateur, unpretentious fun, possibly the most sincere place in local radio.

Thankfully for listeners of this station Evolution radio is available on iheartradio. The one drawback is the music has changed slightly.

In fact last night Pete played a set spun by Maya Jane Coles recorded at Space in Ibiza. It was an amazing set - real house music!!! Now I know that hardly anyone listens to the radio these days - myself included. However to have this station on the air and to be able to just turn the radio on while running errands or whatever and have this is AMAZING.

The careers of two of her favorites--Joanna Newsom and Broken Social Scene--hopefully be cut short by the international shortage of helium. They sound like Alvin and the Chipmunk tribute bands. Musical tastes are subjective but if the announcers don't know anything about the music, they should educate themselves. That's what college is supposedly about. The host of The Coffeehouse talks more about coffee than music. (Her conversation mirrors her musical choices--every comment on repeat). WERS might be able to cut back on their now incessant fundraising drives if they diverted some of the money they spend on MBTA advertising back into the station and if their management would more responsive to their students and their listeners.

Generally the format is the more commercial sounding which will drive you nuts. There's only so much Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross one can take. I hate Rick Ross btw. At any rate, Boston hiphop alumni Edo G hosts a dope sunday show that focuses on indy/rootsy hiphop. Another Boston hiphop alum Jeff 2X (formerly Def Jeff from Almighty RSO/Made Men/Hangmen 3) is also in the building here. The saturday dancehall show is straight up insanity too. The downside (at times) is the screaming. Every single DJ screams at this station. Sometimes the energy is there but a lot of the time its just annoying. Also, they bang through mixes very quickly at times playing only one minute of a track. This is annoying especially if they put on your joint and you're like.... awww shhhhh thats my jam!!! ... but then.... its GONE and they go into another Rick Ross song. UGH! Also, dont believe all their screamy hype - not every DJ in their roster is dope. A couple need to work on their mic sets and practice scratching with serrato at home to perfect it before hitting the airwaves.
