WFPK FM Radio Louisville - Soul Asylum on-air studio performance

The WFPK station was originally a stand alone local public radio station and has now consolidated resources at this location. We were thrilled to be invited to the private studio facilities to view a live on-air performance by Soul Asylum for a 1/2 hour Saturday segment. The band was in town to perform at the Bourbon and Beyond Concert in September 2024. Introductions and interview were conducted by radio host Kyle Meredith and meet-and-greet was held afterward with lead singer Dave Pirner !!!

Doors open at 11:30, show starts at noon, and they are finished at 1. You can just brown-bag your own meal, or if you're a public radio member you can make arrangements for a free sandwich from City Cafe. The studio is great, and the musicians are better. I've seen touring acts like the Dirty Guv'nahs and Jason Isbell here, but I've enjoyed even more being introduced to local musicians like Houndmouth and Ben Sollee. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that the shows here are so satisfying that I usually don't bother to go see the bands play their paid gigs afterward. (But I do tend to throw the musicians a bone by buying their CDs.) The down side? Well, the performance studio is limited to 70 people, which means there are no guarantees, unless you're willing to line up early. And because you want to get there a few minutes early, you're committing yourself to a full siesta -- an hour and a half or more -- something most of us working stiffs can't afford during a workday. I only wish I could play hookey more often. As it is, I try to carefully reward myself every few months. Rarely am I disappointed when I go. Check their website for the schedule.

I found out about 1450WXVW because my boyfriend has a college sports radio show on their station. It started as a college football show, and has spiraled into a fun 1 hour long show about all things sports, and related dealings in the news. He has a lot of fun doing it with his two other friends and the radio guru, Trevor, who works for Sports Buzz. This station is nestled back in a mostly residential looking neighborhood in Jeffersonville IN. It looks like a house of sorts that was transformed into the station. Trevor was very nice and allowed my beau to bring a fun 11 year old (hence why I was present) on the radio with him one week. That was a great experience for him, and I enjoyed being able to watch him have that opportunity. I appreciate Trevor's kindness and attention to having a small guy in there with them. They talked sports. That's what they do. :) Check out this station if you are into local/regional sports as well as talking all things sports. Going Deep is the name of their show. They usually air on either Wednesdays or Thursdays at 7pm. The show runs for 1 hour. They have loads of other sports shows on the air. Tune in.

And since I already give to LPM, I thought I could perhaps show my appreciation in another way, by penning this review. Plus I've been hearing about the pledge drive because I listen to LPM's stations -- specifically 91.9 WFPK Independent Louisville and 89.3 WFPL News Louisville -- several times a day. When I'm in the shower, getting ready to go out, driving around town and working at my desk, I either have the radio on one of these stations or am streaming via the LPM app. I love that on WFPK I discover new music and develop a deeper appreciation for music that I may not have given a full listen to before. Kyle Meredith, John Timmons and Laura Shine, in particular, always curate a great mix of songs. And Duke Meyer, via "Relics," makes me fall deeper in love with classics. WFPK also hosts great "Live Lunch" segments that I've been lucky to attend in studio. The Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore Live Lunch is still one of my favorites. Plus they put on Waterfront Wednesday -- a summer event staple in Louisville. And when I want to learn more about the world around me, I tune into WFPL. I love the shows -- local and national -- that I find on this station, and especially so because they usually take an intelligent, deeper dive into current issues. And on weekends, I'm always eager to listen to "This American Life," "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me," "Ask Me Another" and more. Plus its Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting has shown light on several stories that may not have been covered otherwise. I lived for a short while outside of Louisville, and that made me love LPM even more. Louisville is lucky to have such a resource on its airwaves. I will continue to be a sustaining member for years to come.

After he drove my car, I noticed 89.3 was saves to one of my pre-set buttons and now I'm hooked. The stories shared are current, thorough, unique and interesting. I appreciate the sound bites from people interviewed on the topic which really holds your attention. Live shows are aired from various cities and at times, Louisville is a spot visited. I once took my husband to a show and left surprised at how much I enjoyed seeing the people in person - even funnier than hearing the banter on the radio. Take a break from repetitive music and dial in to this great station and organization. You will not be able to ignore their passion for bringing news to the masses.
