This is my favorite place in the neighborhood next to Pasternak. When I want to come downstairs to grab a drink in a really cozy place and to be around other humans, but not too close to other humans on my own couch and stuff, I head here. Feels like it's likely not changed much since the end of the DDR times. Honestly I'd swear I hung out here in the 90's when p-berg was a very different place, but I was pretty intoxicated in Berlin in the 90's so I can't say for certain. read more

The perfect living room type cafe, older than retro, almost older than vintage.. this place has more charm than most modern places combined. The Caipirinha is a good choice if you are thirsty, or if the sun is out.. otherwise the bio wine, or the coffee are both safe bets. Wohnzimmer only gets packed quite late in the evening, so I like heading there in the early hours when it's still quiet and calm.. then I find it the perfect chair to sink into, bring out a book or a notepad, and get lost in thoughts.. someone else's, or my own. In the back they allow you to smoke, but luckily the front room is smoke-free - which is perfect, seeing it's my favorite anyways. read more

Awful customer service, from staff that look like they chomp on lemons all day. Serious attitude problem. I ordered a Moscow Mule, which tasted awful. I politely asked if I could swap it - the bar lady was rude back, saying that because I had tasted it it couldn't be returned. I said fine, I'd just pay for another drink. She then spoke to a colleague, then begrudgingly changed her mind and made me one. When she brought it over I said a genuine thank you, but she completely blanked me, like a 5 year old in a sulk. I then ordered another drink after from the same staff member, and was charged double the price. Presumably as some kind of restorative justice. Avoid. read more

I was torn between giving 3 or 4 stars but decided to go with 4 as I think Wohnzimmer is a great, cosy cafe/bar. I went here during the day for a meeting and Wohnzimmer has a great atmopshere for that. You feel like you're hanging out in grandmas living room while sipping some tea (or cocktails). The only thing I don't like is that at times it feels a bit clutters like there is too much furniture there, especially when you attempt to go to (what I think) is the smokers area. Besides that though, I think it's a great spot to hang out or work. read more

Being a child of the 80's in Berlin, this mirror image of a great dive bar for me puts Spandau Ballet in perspective with charm as I look over the furniture & find a place to ruminate over culture gone past and consider my next hop on the continent with good company. Nein!! The coffee is NOT good. The deserts were cheap (like discount grocery store). The furniture was vintage and unique but could use cleaning. There is a dirty funk happening here that people choose to ignore when writing a review. It seems they have a no smoking policy now which is good, but it needs to be professionally cleaned as the smell of ash does not compliment anything well in my opinion. The energy was ok. This bar has a nickname in our household, for my fiance who does not speak German: "the perfect bar." As in, "meet me at that perfect bar." They play great music and they actually know how to make a cocktail. Until a few years ago, if you ordered a martini anywhere in Berlin, the bartender would open a bottle of vermouth, pour it into a martini glass and hand it to you. I'm totally serious. read more

My favorite cafe in all Berlin, I think. Wohnzimmer just works. The inside is done up in old sofas and chairs and coffee tables, all mismatched furniture but all plush and charming. for me, the ambiance can't be beat. The bar is right smack when you enter the place, almost always with some sort of daily treat on display, like teas with fresh herbs or little cookies or whatever. A good cup of coffee and a slice of bio cake makes for a great afternoon, only for under EUR5. ....But what really makes this place special for me is the breakfast. My favorite is the großes Käse Frühstück. Good for two people, its a giant plate filled with lovely cheeses, fresh veggies and fruit, some spreads, and a little sweet treat for dessert. The bread is fresh and tasty that comes with it. Also included is a glass of orange juice. For EUR5? I'd call that a good deal. They also have lots of other choices--a combo coffee and bio croissant tray, herb toasts, müsli, and more. Lately I've been getting my breakfast with not just a big ol' coffee but also their Bionade Schwipp, a big glass of red bionade, sekt, strawberries, and fresh mint. Very refreshing. Right now in spring is the best time, to just sit outside on one of the benches and tables that wrap around the outside corner of the building, soaking up the sun and enjoying beautiful Helmholtzplatz. read more

I would have described this place as a 'hidden gem' a while ago, as was Helmholtzplatz, where it's located. Wohnzimmer used to welcome my partner, myself and our dog and we've spent a lot of hours (and money) there lounging in the comfy vintage chairs and sofas. Now, our dog's not welcome so, neither are we!! The place is grungy. I like that, that's not a negative thing but we have overlooked the stench of unwelcome smoke that lingers from adjoining rooms, but please don't, Wohnzimmer, turn your nose up at our well behaved, clean, non-smelly dog!!! There's plenty of more welcoming 'alternative' bars and cafe's in the area as long as they don't all start generating these 'airs and graces' that really don't suit Berlin, the 'beauty' of Berlin. Please don't let Berlin turn into Paris or London! Keep Berlin real with no 'airs and graces'. Please don't forget those who supported you BEFORE the tourists came in their droves! read more

A really relaxed cafe with a real comfortable feeling to it. The service was really nice and quick. The seating is good and we had the separate room off to the left all to ourselves which was nice. Even when other people showed up, it was still completely chilled out. I don't mind the self-service aspect at all and the selection is good. The back room was a bit too smoky for us so we wanted to sit up front but in general a great cafe to hit if in the Helmholtz Platz area. I will be back at some point to try out the breakfast. read more

Okay, admittedly: this place is one of the smokiest bars I've ever been to (they do have a separate room for smokers, but it's still pretty intense throughout), their wine selection isn't mind-blowing, and it can be a pain to find a seat, since it's somehow always. packed. With that said, Wohnzimmer is bar none (ha!) my favorite bar in Berlin. The ambiance is so relaxed and the seating is (for the most part) cozy and comfortable. Tons of places in Berlin go for the vintage antiquey style, but in doing so they all end up looking the same (and not in a good way). This place, on the other hand, can really pull it off. The music is great more often than not, and the people who go there always seem friendly and relaxed. Sure, there are lots of tourists. But it's Prenzlauer Berg, people! Bottom line: come here! It is still one of my old favorite bars in Prenzlauer Berg. I also taught German there once in a while. It actually managed to keep the same style over all those years. The atmosphere is very cozy; it feels like an eclectic shabby chic version of your grandma's living room. It's good for relaxing and chatting with friends. They play good music and the atmosphere is very friendly. In summer it's impossible to sit anywhere but outside because of the heat. However, seats are quickly taken and they don't have that many. Their choice of beer is not too good either, and is bottled. Pretty smoky too if you're a non-smoker. read more
