I went to Avenue 50 Studio for a poetry reading the other week, to celebrate the launch of a new…read morebook by Rocio Carlos and Rachel Kaminer. It was my first time at this venue, though I know it hosts readings and other cultural events all year round. It's a really lovely gallery in Highland Park, with a focus on Chicanx/Latinx visual arts. The space is welcoming, with several open rooms flowing into each other, each of them decked out with artwork. Until this weekend, you can see a Day of the Dead exhibit honoring photographer Laura Aguilar, with tribute photography from several artists, as well as a display of Aguilar's Day of the Dead coffin series from 1990. The reading was on a Friday night, so it was basically a party, with booze and snacks and a DJ (poet F. Douglas Brown) in addition to the poetry. It felt fun and vibrant and comfortable, like a party in a super cool artist's house. There were probably over fifty people in attendance, and we all fit comfortably in the main room when it came time to listen to the reading. If you're looking to add a little more art to your cultural diet, I'd highly recommend checking out Avenue 50 Studio. Check the calendar, too, as there are regular free events. You might get some music and literature to go with your dose of visual art.

The garage Gallery is located by the 110 freeway between (7th) and garland on a very dark street. Parking is very scarce its all meter however, there is parking right around the corner for 12$ and $10 Which, is a quick skip an a jump from the gallery. Side note: The 12$ parking has an attendant and the 10$ parking is by machine. Bring cash because the machine doesn't always work so good with a credit card! The gallery itself used to be an old auto mechanics garage they converted into an art gallery, which is un-like the typical Gallery's you'll find in downtown LA. It is a must see if your into a great art experience! The walls are covered with murals painted by extremely talented graffiti artist. The quality, color, and composition of the entire pieces will blow your mind, and the work is this absolutely fascinating! The traditional artwork displayed for purchase is canvas, digital, airbrush, t-shirts, prints, and vinyl. The artwork is hanging buy nuts and bolts and steel chains hooked to the roof very industrial ja ja. Here's where the experience becomes even cooler, the other half of the gallery is a huge dance floor highlighted by black light to highlight the neon murals painted on the walls. A cute female DJ plays music so if you like, you can dance, kick back, have a beer, or just relax and enjoy meeting new people. The ambiance here is totally relaxed and it's just a fun place to chill. The best thing about this Gallery is the owner and his name is Trek. He's a really nice guy an, I love that he's so passionate about artist, art, and the art scene in general. He's a credit to the kind of people that run the art scene in downtown Los Angeles. If you have a chance to make it out to his gallery I highly recommend because he will also greet you with a smile. Great owner, great gallery, and a great experience I highly recommend it!

I'd been trying to find the time to visit this museum ever since it opened in 2018, but it just…read morehadn't happened until this week, shortly after it reopened after its COVID-19 closure. I was worried about having missed out on the prior exhibits--but I was excited to see that the current exhibit is actually a kind of "best of" the prior four shows, which helped me get up to speed. Booking my visit was so easy on the 3D-Space website, and opting into text messages allowed me to receive a confirmation that day and even detailed parking instructions, which I really appreciated. We texted the museum founder and director Eric Kurland upon our arrival and he greeted us at the gate and walked us down to the basement level entrance. 3D-Space may look small at first, but there is SO much history represented in its artifacts to certainly fill the hour-long time slot (and then some). Eric's knowledge base about 3D technology, optics, and equipment as well as its place in cultural history is really impressive. Although he was happy to let us explore on our own or guide us on a tour through the museum, we took advantage of the latter and bent his ear with all kinds of questions. (It's impossible to stump him!) I really loved the display of Diableries (and the video of them animated that's showing in the back of the museum) as well as seeing some of the figurines that had been photographed to create Viewmaster slides of the Flintstones, Beauty and the Beast, and more. There were also a couple of 3D coin-up consoles that were a real treat to experience. I look forward to seeing what future shows Eric puts on at this hidden gem of a museum!

The bouncy air mattresses for the kids looked very dirty and worn... I don't think I would want my kids to climb all over that germ mountain and put their hands in their mouth. There was a booth with free photo booth that seemed interesting. Otherwise, it's hard to not compare this to so many of the bigger, newer, cleaner fairs around the city (626 Night Market, OC County Fair, LA County Fair, etc) But go Yelp for having a booth! Fortunately, there were still interesting things to see, from jewelry makers using materials from a disassembled nuclear warhead, to bracelets with a cause that's supposed to make you happy when you wear it. My favorite vendors there were Noral Clothing which makes gorgeous custom, and Lulu Designs, which have awesome vintage designs on high quality materials. bracelets Music and food is also featured here, with a special area for the 21 & older crowd looking to dehydrate the old fashioned way. With alcohol. And once that's done, there are vendors giving away "healthy" soda samples. The food vendors range from Umami Burger, to traditional Thai food. And if worse comes to worst, and you don't find anything on the street, there are pretty trendy restaurants on the sidewalk. My personal favorite, is a Thai vegan place called 'Green Leaves Vegan,' selling healthy food at very reasonable prices. Even if it's not the most exciting of places to go to, it's definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area. You might find a small treasure worth the effort.

It's unique lot layout with patio style furniture and fixtures makes it feel like a party in the coolest backyard. From vendor marts, to comedy shows, queer mixers, foodie days and beyond. I got to experience Temple Grounds as part of an event Sabo No Sabo, an LGBTQ+ BIPOC party group spreading visibility & bridging gaps ‍, cool vendors #ShopSmallSupportLocal - incredible DJ Carmen (basically a younger version of Dj Irene - if you know you know), incredible performances, excellent drag show and plenty of libations. Parking might be the only challenge, but LA Metro runs pretty frequently along Temple Street and rideshare is relatively easy. Portable bathroom on site w/ hand washing station. Natural lighting and string lights at night. Murals of incredible art. Plants for sale. And the kindness coolest laidback owner, Nancy running the show. Queer owned. Woman owned.
