Hollow tree and boundary stone on the Underground Railroad Experience Trail
    Paul L.

We had a nice hike this morning on the Underground Railroad Experience Trail, followed by wandering around the buildings (which of course were closed for the pandemic). The site manager passed by and asked if er had any questions, so we asked about some of the buildings and she switched into her tour rap -- I couldn't help feeling she was glad to be able to talk to visitors). One thing that was a bit off-putting -- she talked about the fact that the Palmer family, that has owned the farm located on the property, had decided to keep slaves that came into its possession with the patriarch;s second marriage, and kept them even though the local Friends' community to which he belonged had freed all of its slaves and expelled him from their Meeting because he had decided not to to so as well -- of course, she said, he had acquired more land and needed laborers to maintain it, so this was just a decision and as an historian she could not pass judgment. just try to understand what had moved him

Attended the Underground Railroad tour on Saturday. The tour guide, Peter Routson, was very engaging and informative. He shared the information with great insight and encouraged the attendees participation. Highly reccomend tour for anyone interested in finding out more about the Underground Railroad and the history of the Sandy Spring area.

Affordable memberships considering the area. I have friends who have been members for years and still enjoy it. The golf course is really solid. They have a great mixture of holes. A couple of drivable par 4s and all the par 5s are reachable from certain tees. Two tough par 3s on the back that can make or break a round. Green surrounds are tough if you're in the wrong spot. The greens themselves are always in fantastic shape. They are severely sloped at times, so you must be accurate with your approach shots. I couldn't find the golf course architect on their website, but they did a good job considering the hilly topography and small footprint of the property. But I can also see one hitting pretty much the exact same shots every time no matter what tee box you're playing. Favorite hole: Par 5 12th, except for the yellow range balls that litter the left side. Downhill the entire way. Range on the left, trees and then the 18th hole on the right. Reachable for many with usually a blind-ish to a peninsula green with water right and long. The very tall red stake frames the front right of the green. Very cool hole before the brutally tough par 3 13th. The driving range is good and they have really nice Titleist practice balls to hit. The short game area is outstanding. I could spend hours out there with a few wedges. They have two small-ish putting greens on either side of the clubhouse. The restaurant is a great space and they have an area for bigger events. The food and service are both good too. Sadly, I have not enjoyed the pool area. Just a solid club overall. The members I have interacted with have all been great. I have had and heard somewhat mixed interactions with the people that run the place, but nothing bad enough to write about here.

Anyhoo, I've been a few times, and the food is pretty good. Not great, but good. The service is very good, and the overworked staff do a heck of a job considering the obnoxious people they have to wait on.

The place is cute, it's like a house, with several different dining sections. We started with the pork "wonton" appetizer. Some pieces of the diced pork were a little fatty so hubby and daughter didn't love that. These were not wontons, they were more like chips with the diced pork on top of it. But I thought the sauce had a good Asian flavor. We also had the crab soup, which was very good. For entrees, I feel like they could have had more items on their menu. But I was in the mood for a burger, as was my daughter. It was a good sized burger and it was very good. We both enjoyed it. Hubby got a chicken pasta dish, which he enjoyed too! It didn't disappoint with the crispy battered fried cod and crispy hot fries. It was delicious. One of my friends ordered the egg plant, cheese, tomato sauce and noodles. She really liked her dish. Another friend ordered the pork chop with cheesy potatoes. He said it was tender and delicious. My other friends ordered the teriyaki salmon and they both loved it. Our server was trying to serve too many tables. So, getting dessert took a long time. It also took forever to get a correct check. I ordered the opera cake which was 3 different cakes combined into one. I thought it was really tasty. Luckily, we were enjoying the evening. But, a word of caution... there are not enough servers on the outside deck. I did take off a star for the wait time. But, the food was awesome and we will definitely go back.
