I went to Woods Ace because they were the only ones open on Saturday. I bought a Stihl weed eater due to the last one I got somewhere else not starting no matter what I did. I was immediately helped and once I decided to purchase the item they took it to the back and tested it before I left the store, I didn't even tell them about it the trouble I had had before coming in, that's just something they do there. I was helped to get the warranty set up right there in the store. The whole experience was awesome. it was the best service I've had from anywhere in years. Worst sales person ever. I drove 40 minutes to buy a recteq RT380x grill/smoker. The floor model had the lid installed wrong. I asked the "manager" why the lid didn't seat properly. He mumbled something about a new manufacturer and they all fit like that and that I was wrong. I called him an idiot and walked out. In the parking lot I googled the issue and come to find out if you over tighten the hinge screws the lid won't close properly. I called the store from the parking lot to talk to the GM to try to maybe go back in and buy the grill but they said he was indisposed. This store is very near my home, so it is wonderfully convenient. If you are expecting a super store hardware store, this is not it. This is a smaller hardware store with lots of great little things (I call them treasurers) you may not find in the bigger places. They do have the essential things for plumbing, painting, fixing, planting, ant control, etc. But they also have handmade things you can give as gifts that are local to the area. Very cute. The people that work here are very knowledgable and helpful. I have run in here for a new air filter, or things to fix my bathroom sink or get a copy of a key. Helpful when locating a specific item (I.e, fence vs deck screws/nails, various bug sprays, etc) Would best call it the CVS of home improvement stores: best suites when you don't have time to wait in line, need assistance with specific project items, or want to score premium products or great deals. They have Yeti and Green Egg products, and on the other hand, have snagged some $5 welcome mats on sale. They also have really cute patio furniture pieces- picked up a couple $60 Uwharrie chairs, painted them white, and they still look brand new. So, I needed a piece of glass cut. ACE has done this for me multiple times in the past; once @ Woods ACE Hdw. two days ago. (I asked up at the register first & they sent me back to the paint dept.) Today though, Nick said, "Sorry. We don't cut other people's glass here." I asked, "Since when? Is this a new policy? Y'all did it for me the other day." He said, "Not at this store." So I asked, "Are you saying I'm lying?" (He clearly thought I was.) He asked me, "When?" I answered, "Wednesday." Then he asked, "Who did it for you?" (He really thought I was lying.) but I named the ACE employee who'd cut the glass, (yet didn't know the name of the Wed. register person who said, "Yes. They'll cut your glass for you back in paint.") I asked if the manager was there and Nick said, "Yes. It's me." And I responded, "You're the manager here? For the whole store?" This is the closest hardware store so I often stop in here when I need a/c filters. They're reasonably priced and they always have my sizes available. My most recent trip was for spray paint for my shutters. They had multiple options available for the color I needed and for use on plastic (with primer too!). They always answer my questions & assist in any way possible. Overall this is a good store. Only problem I have however is their reward program. If you spend a certain amount of money over time , I thinks its 200 dollars you get a five dollar reward. Pretty good and I shop there often. The problem is they put an expiration date on it. I just left from there and they would not take my coupon that was expired by 8 days. The gentleman John who owned the store before the Woods would always accept these....regardless of the exp date....I mean its a reward that you EARNED....not a coupon off that comes in the mail every couple of weeks. I purchased 2 spray cans of Ace brand gloss enamel black to finish my project that has taken me 5+ weeks to complete. The 1st spray can erupted mainly all over my hand and down my arm. Still, the paint hit it's target and I now need the 2nd can. 2nd can wouldn't stop spraying. However, I proceeded to finish painting. Everything seemed ok. 5 mins later, my hand crafted 2 drawer stand is all grey. Call 800#. She called this store. Spoke to manager Santos who said "if she comes in, I can refund her or swap the paint can out". Really? Not both options for ruining weeks of work? I'm a teacher in 2 schools. I was in search of a yeti cooler for a Father's Day present. This one had the color I wanted. I had never been. I was expecting to find a tool store like the box guys. I had my kids with me so I wanted to get in get out. We walked in and my kids liked the store. They had cool kids stuff. Then just about every area I was in there was a worker if I needed helped. What a great store! I'm huge on customer service, and this location is outstanding. From the moment you walk through the door, if you're wandering around the store, you can bet on at least two associates saying hello and asking if you need help. The store is always very clean and organized with a great selection. Once in a while there are certain things I can't find here, so I have to go to the competition. Sometimes, Ace's prices can be slightly higher than their competition. The plant and garden section are equally excellent. A very good selection of plants, shrubs and flowers. The selection and fair pricing on garden equipment also make for an easy choice to shop here. The staff are very friendly and work very hard. I appreciate that they have a positive attitude in a climate that is extremely hot/humid! Notably the associate named Brent, goes above and beyond to ensure customers are happy. He knows his stuff! We appreciated his knowledge of local plants and the growing conditions. We purchased a very large amount of plants for a commercial project. Brent was very good about making sure we were not wasting our money on plants that would not make it. He was kind enough to come by our location to check on things, to deliver "stragglers" or spur of the moment plants and just to make sure that we were satisfied with what he'd helped us choose. Absolutely love this store! The staff is super friendly and helpful. I like that my money is going to a store that has a small time feel. This is my go to place for mailing packages, the post office is open seven days a week and has hours until 6! Inside the store, there are little shopping carts for kiddos which is helpful when you have to bring them. Anytime I have asked for help, plants or hardware, the answer has not only been helpful but sincere. While heading to my favorite coffee shop I realized that there was an ACE Hardware literally within a few feet. I was so relieved because I needed a ton of house ware goods and didn't want to drive across town to a Home Depot or Lowe's. I was fortunate because this ACE store had everything that I needed and I loved the fact that the store was much smaller than some of the larger hardware stores. I didn't need to walk what seemed like the length of a football field to find the items that I needed and to top it off, whenever I had a question, there was always someone within a few feet of me who was willing to assist me. I even grabbed a guy from the paint department to ask a question about lawn and garden items and he didn't tell me that "he was not a lawn and garden associate" or refer me to another department, he came right over and did his best to recommend the product that would meet my needs. I have always been helped with whatever I need, be it advice on a project or an item that I need. However, during this COVID crisis I walked into the store shortly after open, I saw that once entrance was marked Exit (the entrance I have been entering in for years) so I walked over to the other door and walked in, not realizing that the one guy standing outside of the Entrance door was in fact the "line" to enter the store. Three steps into the building and I was immediately halted by the lady at the register with a "Sir I am going to need..." and I immediately cut her off with a "Oh sorry are y'all doing a headcou-...." (Are y'all doing a headcount type of thing) which she cut me off with "I need you...to walk out...of my store...right now." I put the "..." to emphasize the pauses she placed in there, and it's important to note her tone was very annoyed and frustrated. I understand it was early and maybe her caffeine hadn't kicked in quite yet, but I also don't know why she was saying "her store" because I remember when she started working there a few years ago. Besides this one Incident, I cannot complain about this location at all, and would rather give 5 stars throughout years of service, but I have to admit that I seriously considered ever being a patron to this business ever again because of this one employees' words, actions, and tone. After cooling off I realized that I can't let her actions alone ruin my thoughts of this business that someone has poured years of their life into cultivating, so I will definitely return, but I think this employee needs to be reminded of customer service policies. I hate to admit it, but I often forget that Ace is right here on Old Trolley road (adjacent to the mall that hosts Toast! Summerville). But every time I stop here, I have the most pleasant shopping experience. I think literally every employee says "hello" and offers to help me find something. While sometimes it's a bit startling because you've already been asked this by every other employee you've come across, I do appreciate it because usually I do end up needing help and by the time I realize I need help there's no one around to help me! I was very disappointed to find out that filling my propane tank costs almost twice as much than filling it at Costco. So I came into the store today which for the last year or two you have been my go to store. There was a small kamota jr grill on the floor that wasn't setup correctly but I was willing to take the floor model and work with it. You wouldn't budge on price being a floor model, you wouldn't throw in a bag of charcoal. I would have bought it from you even though I saw it for 100 dollars cheaper at Lowe's and Amazon. I would have bought yours and fixed it no problem if you threw in a bag of charcoal ( 20 bucks), but your manager was stubborn and didn't even come to talk to me or offer any discount. Gary is always willing to help with a smile on his face. I've seen him pulled in multiple directions answering questions about plants and he's always so positive, well spoken and he knows a lot, I mean a lot about plants. They have items you won't find in Walmart, Home Depot or Lowe's which is why we go there so much. I'm very local to this store and try to use it as often as possible. The USPS desk is especially convenient and the usual staff are always excellent. HOWEVER - This last Sunday it all went terribly wrong and they lost my business to both store and the super convenient Post Office. I'd rather drive to the end of Trolley Road now to mail stuff. So I needed some screws for some carpet trim. I go to the store and they have millions of screws and after about 20 mins without help, I narrow it down to 2 screws. As I passed a guy he did question me as to whether I needed help and I at 1st said no as I already had my choice narrowed down to 2 screws. Then I thought well maybe he might know so I told him what I was doing and jokingly said I needed to buy 2 screws at 9c each so I could nip back home, check the size and then come straight back to buy the box. He just aid 'Oh ok then!' and went straight back to his notepad leaving me hanging there. I thought this was a little odd but went to pay. I paid, I left, I checked the size at home, I returned and I went to get the box. $5.29 on the drawer so I grab the box and go to pay. Notepad guy looks up at me as I pass then looks down again. I get to the cashier and a customer was already there and seemed to be struggling to understand something. There was another guy in front of me wanting to buy some bottled gas and a guy behind me with 2 bored and noisey kids. I get to pay and the new male cashier rings up an amount that with tax was over $7 and thought that seemed high so I told him the price said 5.29 on the drawer. He then asked me if I would like him to go and check the price. As he seemed to be waiting for my reply (odd) and the 2 kids behind be were getting raucous I heard myself saying not to bother I'll just pay the higher amount. Lol seriously I said that.... He shrugged his shoulders and said nothing but proceeded to ring me up for the high amount and I was just about to sign when I came to my senses and said, hang on a minute.... this ain't right! I was suddenly really annoyed by this and asked him if it was normal to just overcharge someone for convenience. He just shrugged so naturally I got even more irritated. I told him not to put himself out and that I would go and get the drawer, yes folks the whole drawer. On the way back to the cashier with drawer in hand, notebook guy asked me if everything was OK so I said no it was not OK. All he could say was that I was not to worry and that I would only pay the amount it said on the drawer on this occasion. Sounded to me like he was doing me a favor and implied that I was trying to put one over on them. SERIOUSLY?!?!? He didn't even take the drawer off me and just let me go off with it to the front desk. He just went back into his conversation with another member of staff who also just looked at me like I was weird but not interested type of expression. So by now I'm seething and back in line. Unfortunately I really needed these darned screws as I really wanted to launch them due to my near 'losing it completely' situation. I just told myself it wasn't worth jail over a box of darned screws...lol The cashier didn't say a thing and just entered the correct price as if nothing was wrong. So I asked him if he actually understood what I had been asking him and whether he understood why I was so annoyed. He just shrugged again. I pressed as to whether he would have been happy to pay the extra amount as opposed to the right amount and he said that he would have easily paid the higher amount in this sort of situation as it was easier. I told him the maybe 1 reason for him not having a lot of money is because of that attitude. Hey, I didn't even cuss other than explain the reason why I was by now so 'p%^%$d!' So I got annoyed and obviously lost my position of any respect but to have it thrown back in your face in front of other customers and 3-4 other members of staff who all did NOTHING is in my opinion UNNACCEPTABLE On my way out I proclaimed that I would not be back and I heard him say OK. Manager of this joint - SERIOUSLY? Can you imagine how this would have gone down at either Lowes or Home depot which are both at either end of this street? I have been using ace to ship packages US mail service and also to purchase plants, paint etc. Until this past week I have been very satisfied. Last week I went to ship a package and was greeted by a young brunette girl behind the counter who immediately had an attitude. She definantly did not want to be there. I decided to change method of shipping, she said it would be too much trouble to remove the tape! Then said she would have to charge &3.00 for a piece of new tape! I have mixed emotions about this Ace Hardware location. The staff is extremely friendly, and I really like the neighborhood feel of the store. However, the shelfs sometimes are a little bit barren, and in the summertime the store is swelteringly hot. Tried to call this store to ask a question. No one answers the phone. A recording comes on & lists extension numbers. No one answers the extensions. I tapped "0" for the operator. No one answers. A recording tells me to leave a message & then says messages cannot be left as the mail box is full! I've shopped this store a few times & always felt the staff was a bit "stuffy" & isn't interested in helping customers. This not answering the phone issue confirmed my thoughts. I then called Ace Hardware on Dorchester Rd. The phone was answered immediately by a very polite lady. She answered my question & gave me some information about tanks for gas grills. Reserved 2 weeks in advance and was told they didn't have the 24' truck but I could drive to Buford - must be 65 miles away. Got a -6' instead, it was dirty inside and out. Ran terrible. Because of the small truck - we called Budget and told them we would need it another day. When I turned the truck in the amount due was double due to late charges etc. The employee didn't offer to call Budget Truck Rental even though I told him we had called. If they can find a way to do so, they always provide cost effective solutions and helpful advice on every project I've involved them. Should they not have a particular item in stock, they will accurately state when it will arrive. If that does not work for me, they will recommend alternatives options of where the item might be found. From the store manager to the last person you see on the way out, these are folks trying to do a good service to their customers. Ace hardware is always helpful. I can't say much about their post office services as I've never used them.. But as a hardware store they are top notch. They have a good selection of products and a lot of hard to find items. The prices on their PEX valves is about as good as it gets. The Staff is well informed and you can't walk 10 feet into the store without someone asking "Need any help finding anything?" If you're looking for anything, just tell them and they can point you straight to it. The best part about this store is their screen service. I haven't found one like it anywhere else. All you have to do is bring them a damaged window / door screen and they'll repair it for a great price. They can even re-build your screens if they're dry-rotted beyond repair (had one where the corner pieces turned to powder, the guy replaced it and made the screen good as new. Just to sum it up, Excellent service, Excellent selection, and competitive prices. read more

Horrible experience!!! We confirmed our truck rental with Ace Hardware a week prior to our move and scheduled our flight arrangements, everything! Ace Hardware calls us the morning of, I repeat THE MORNING OF, our out of state move to advise us that there was a mistake and they don't have the truck after all. No apology, nothing, just simply said the truck is not available and the reservation will be cancelled. Really? People make scheduling arrangements based on the confirmation you provide! Now, because someone simply couldn't use some common courtesy and give us at least a days notice, we are out an additional $300 as we had to find another truck same day at a premium rate!
