Joan and Kathy are the best, and treated us as if we were family. They were always available for any request. Accomodations were excellent and well-kept. Clean and spotless. Happy hour was fun especially if there are other guests. Sitting at their little bar or sitting on the grand front porch just chilling is great. And their breakfasts are amazing and made fresh. Each morning is something different. If you eat it all, there is no room for lunch. My wife and I travel the world, and this is one of the most charming, relaxing, and accomodating places we have stayed. Downtown Front Royal with all of its eateries is within walking distance. This is an older establishment, very decorated, in town, with offstreet parking. We had a great breakfast, maybe even a little too much. The hosts were wonderful to chat with. The room had lots of space, with a large bed, separate sitting and TV area, and a small refrigerator in the room. It was a little tight in the bathroom. There are alot of collectables throughout the house. The common bar on the first floor had complimentary drinks, with fresh baked cookies and some snacks in the room. There were also sweets scattered through the home. If you find the bed is too high, look under the bed for a stepstool. We were given bath salts as a gift when we left. read more

Love this bed and breakfast inn. We stayed there a few years ago and happily returned. Charming is the description of this place. It is filled with antiques but is comfortable and cozy. A huge breakfast is served daily till 9:00 am, fresh fruit, toast, fresh baked muffins and a big plate of eggs and ham or a giant omelette or french toast or pancakes with potatoes. The sisters who run the Inn are very, very friendly. I can't believe they manage such a big place. There is at least one separate cottage on the property. Often, the small bar area is open in the evenings with complimentary beer or wine. They even made me a cup of sleepy time tea. Several of the folks we met at breakfast had stayed there before. This is a place to return at every opportunity. We will return. read more

On a cold & rainy night, the folks at Woodward House came through for us. Originally, we had planned to stay at an AirBnB in the area, however, we couldn't make it up the icy, unpaved road to our destination. Not wanting to give up and head back to D.C., we called Woodward House with fingers crossed, explained our situation, and got the cheery response of "come on up!" This was our first stay in a bed & breakfast, and it was really great. We were greeted with warm beds and some friendly advice on where to get dinner. The next morning we found out that "skip-a-lunch breakfast" was no joke. This will definitely be our go-to stay next time we want to take a trip to the Shenandoah. read more

The Woodward House was a lovely discovery in the tiny town of Front Royal. Though we only spent one night in Nancy's Perch, we hope to go back soon. The innkeepers seem to take the time to get to know every guest and will tell you the story of the house as well as all of their predecessors over a free pint (or two or three) of delicious VA beer. As for breakfast, the list of menu items is truly impressive. Coffee, orange juice and homemade muffins to start. Oatmeal with a variety of topping options and a homemade cinnamon apple concoction. Then you get to order. From the healthy omelet to the decadent French toast ... you will not be disappointed. Also, if you get the chance, try one of Joan's homemade teas! Only 10 minutes from Route 66 and just about a mile from the entrance to Skyline drive, this place is great for antique-hunters, hikers, cyclists or just city folk looking for a retreat. read more

Our first stay at a Bed & Breakfast and we're so glad it was here. Our bedroom was Julia's Suite and it definitely was sweet! King size bed was very comfortable with many pillows to choose from. Sitting area had a cozy fireplace, tv, and plenty of seating options. There were homemade cookies, Keurig coffee maker, small fridg, snacks and water. We had a nice view of the sunrise over the mountains in the morning and the "skip lunch" breakfast was so fresh and tasty. Fruit, warm banana nut muffin, oatmeal ... then the breakfast option you chose. I had the blueberry pancakes and my husband had the vegetable and cheese omelette. Both delicious. Bonus for dog lovers was Lucky the 175 lb mastiff who loved sitting on my feet. Felt like Joan was an old friend and Kathy was out every few minutes to check on us during our yummy breakfast. read more

We stayed overnight in their Julia Room which was a good-sized suite with a small living room and a king-sized bed. When we arrived Joan the owner had stepped out but the guests warmly welcomed us. I gather they were regular patrons of this place. They showed us to our room and invited us to join them in the bar. The place itself is a more traditional looking b&b with the busy floral wallpaper and knick-knacks and books all over the place. My husband later went downstairs to find the owner and chatted with them for a bit. Overall a very friendly, hospitable place. We had breakfast the next morning which was the best we'd ever had at a b&b. There was a small buffet of hot and cold cereals. We also had fresh-cut fruit and a warm sticky pecan bun waiting for us at the table. Then we ordered a veggie omelette which was pretty yummy. Joan and Bob are wonderful hosts! My husband and I enjoyed the comfy bed, spacious and eclectic room, and delicious breakfast.

A bit of a mixed bag. Our company booked 4 rooms as overflow lodging from a nearby venue in Hume where our company outing was being held. I received great feedback from our guests staying in the cottages -- they appreciated the rooms and the breakfast if not the location (across from a gas station and down the road from a McDonalds - you get the idea). When we arrived around 9PM we were a little stunned by a party going on loud and strong in the parlor. Joan pulled herself away to lead us up to our room and then mentioned we could come back down and drink too after we got settled in. Maybe she didn't see my 7 year old son desperate to go to sleep. The room we stayed in was very small, smelled of mold and needed some basic repairs to plumbing. That would have been tolerable, and I could have convinced myself it was charming and whimsical, but we also had to put up with the carousing that went on late into the night directly below us by the other guests partaking in free booze. Had I not been with my young son I probably would have joined in, but it just wasn't feasible. I'd suggest booking a cottage if you are traveling with kids or don't want to hang out in the parlor until the rest of the guests are ready to retire. We couldn't stay for breakfast, as it didn't accommodate our early morning schedule, but a nearby diner took good care of us. I have traveled the world and this place ranks way at the top in similarity and "feel" of a magnificently run UK country inn. Host and hostess were extremely happy, helpful and caring people. Loved them both. The house sits atop a wonderful hill that offers tremendous views and "peace" in the evening on the massive covered porch - rocking chairs included. Motorcycle friendly. Joan, Bob and Kathy have mastered the "Art of Hospitality". I recently reserved the Woodward House for the weekend of my daughter's graduation from Christendom College. There were 12 of us staying, most of whom were first timers to this spectacular bed and breakfast. From the moment we entered their quaint front room on Thursday to our depature on Sunday morning, we were treated like family. Actually better than family, as they went out of their way to see to our every comfort and need with pleasure. We took advantage of the complimenary beer and wine both evenings. Joan, Bob Kathy, Gene, and Donnie joined us for an evening of enjoyable conversation and celebration. Bob tended the bar area and regaled us with with his quick wit and entertaining stories There is so much to love about this place. The rooms are all different in character, each with a unique feel, with one thing in common, amazing beds and linens. My one sister described the bed as sleeping on a cloud and I agree with her. The homemade cookies in your room are to die for as is the "skip a lunch breakfast". Try to stay on a Saturday night and on Sunday morning you will be treated to a southern favorite, Sausage Gravy and cheddar cheese biscuits...yum. We plan many more trips to this "special retreat" and I know the rest of our family are already looking to come back for another weekend. The best thing about this place is by far the Innkeepers. We have stayed a number of times at the Woodward House, but our most recent stay was particularly wonderful. We had signed up at a nearby airbnb place for a couple of nights but the first night there was so awful that we contacted Joan and Bob to see if they had a room for the second night. They really didn't have any rooms but instead opened up a suite that was really large for our needs. So, we got truly royal treatment on Royal Avenue! Woodward House has a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere and Joan and Bob are the ultimate hosts. Every room we have stayed in there is very lovely and the suite was particularly nice. They have happy hours at a little in-house bar in the afternoon, and the guests can get to know each other and Bob and Joan a bit better. There isn't enough room to write about the breakfast. The variety is amazing, the preparation flavors, and presentation are exceptional, and amounts truly allow you to skip lunch. I can't say enough for this place and these special hosts. read more

My wife and I invariably stay at bed and breakfast inns when we travel, as we try and avoid cookie cutter hotels. We both agree that our stay at the Woodward House on Manor Grade was the best thus far. The exterior when we drove up the steep driveway caused some caution as it seemed a bit worn. Ah, but looks are deceiving, as we were welcomed by the sweet proprietor Joan as if we were long lost friends. We retired to the the quaint little pub in their living room and had a nice draft craft ale before we even unloaded our luggage. Our stay of 3 days was regrettably too short, as Joan and her husband Bob, and sister Kathy were extremely gracious and treated us like family visiting their quirky, cluttered, invariably interesting inn. We stayed in the Elizabeth's Suite and it was nice having a little separate room for lounging and reading. The breakfasts we had each day were amazing and ample, and we had the good fortune to be here for the Sunday biscuits and gravy special (scratch cheese biscuits and homemade sausage gravy, the best ever.). We will be back to this small piece of paradise soon. read more

We just returned from our second stay at Woodward House--what a wonderful experience. We had come to see the leaves in the Shenandoah National Park, but a cold and rainy weekend put a crimp in those plans--no matter! We could have spent the entire weekend nestled in Joan and Bob's cozy B&B. Our room (Julia's suite) was spacious and included a gas fireplace, as well as snacks including homemade cookies. Joan even baked a cake and made a card for my husband's birthday. We very much enjoyed wandering around those house looking at the many mementos that decorate seemingly every surface. And a complementary glass of wine (or 2) sitting at the bar while playing Trivial Pursuits was a very pleasant way to pass a few hours. The breakfasts were outstanding--including homemade pumpkin pancakes and a delicious omelet, loaded with veggies, cheese and country ham and truly met the "skip a lunch" criteria. Tthe location is great--we were able to walk to an excellent restaurant (Element) for dinner, as well as to a movie theater, and it was just a short drive to several wineries. Last but not least, when we left a couple of items behind, they shipped them back to us promptly--and didn't even charge us for the postage. Thank you Joan, Bob, and Kathy. I've never stayed at a B&B prior to my one night stay at Woodward House, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but if all B&Bs are as delightful as this one, then it is an experience that I would love to have again, as they set the bar high. I've never experienced such genuine hospitality before. The host are super kind and generous. We had the most delicious breakfast. The decorations were absolutely wonderful and our room was spacious and comfortable. There were many little personal touches that made me feel the hosts went above and beyond to serve their customers (like homemade cookies). The front porch deck felt like something out of a story. Finally the location is superb when staying in Front Royal, which is a great little spot for a quick weekend get away.
