goodstone? more like mid-stone. we expected a stellar dinner but were let down by both food and service. our server told us it was "busy" but it was a long holiday weekend and there were plenty of open tables. we saw other tables were being offered bread, when we hadn't. so we asked for bread. after assertions that it was "in the oven," we never got the bread. and the waiter never brought it up again before giving us our check. he also brought us the wrong dessert and when our dessert did come you could tell it was pre plated, so it didn't make sense to have such a delay. the food was not great. we had to send our steak back because it was totally hammered. it was also perhaps the worst cut of filet, i've ever had. nothing we ordered was worth the price. there were also ants running around our table and it was unreasonably cold in the restaurant for june. i highly recommend saving your money and going somewhere else. read more

We came here before for mother's day and we expected the same level of food quality and service. We were disappointed by both, mostly the food. Let's just say the food was not eatable. We paid $500 for a salad that had no pairs or blue cheese on it, eventho it was listed in the menu. The wine was vinegar. The steak was a lump of fat dumped on mash potatos with yellow stained broccoli... stuff you see in prison movies. The kicker was the desert. They took regular savory stale biscuits and put whipped cream on it. The server did not care much since it was prepaid with a gratuity included. We enjoyed a one night stay in the Stallion Suite. The staff were incredible. From the moment we arrived to our departure, everyone's attitude was friendly, helpful and informative. The property is massive. Driving onto the grounds brings us to the inn. There is plenty of walking and exploring. The pool area also has lawn games and a fire pit. Our room was perfectly cleaned. The massive king size poster bed was very comfortable. This suite included a sitting area in the bedroom. Then, down our private hall, we had a small living room and coffee station. The mini fridge was stocked with sodas and water. I ordered room service twice and the food was delicious and well prepared. This place is a great getaway even for one evening. read more

This review is for brunch at Grayson's. It was the worst steak I've ever had especially for $38. It was 90% fat and inedible. I would've asked for a change but food took 30-40m to come out. It is tough to write this review because I would like to review both the restaurant and the Inn separately, but there does not seem to be a way. So here are two reviews: Goodstone Inn - Loved this place. It is a series of houses scattered across a working farm. We stayed at the Manor House. There were three couples in our group, so we took three of the four bedrooms. All were spacious and well appointed. But we also really enjoyed the dining room area, the living room, the sunroom, the patio and all of the little hidden hallways. Just a perfect place for our group. While on property we also enjoyed the pool for a relaxing afternoon, a walk around the property and the restaurant. More on the restaurant later. Goodstone was a convenient and very scenic drive from downtown Middleburg and a great central location for visiting wineries. I highly recommend staying at the Inn. The Goodstone Restaurant Breakfast. As guests of the Inn, we had breakfast there every morning included in our room rate. That is usually a signal that breakfast will not be very good. Wrong ... it was excellent every day. Our group tried everything on the menu over our 4 mornings and loved every item. Two items need to be pointed out. The eggs, no matter how prepared were the best eggs any of us had ever had - fluffy, flavorful and moist. The Smoked and House Cured Salmon on multigrain toast. I have had smoked salmon for breakfast around the world and this was without question the best breakfast salmon dish I have ever tasted. The salmon itself, the egg, cream cheese, the herbs and the onion were mixed and prepared to perfection. The Goodstone Restaurant Dinner: We ate in the restaurant for one of the Bistro Dinners, not the fancy dinners. Excellent lighter fare for our first night in town. Lots of salads at our table, all very good. My wife and I also shared an Herb Chicken which was perfectly prepared. Service seems a bit spotty during the evening. Especially compared to the excellent breakfast service. I would still make the decision to eat one meal here, but if not staying on property, I would not seek it out. Breakfast on the other hand - come from any hotel and experience this on. So, conclusion. I would give the Inn overall 5 stars. I would give the restaurant 5 stars for breakfast. A lot of potential being wasted. Beautiful setting and facility. Staff was on par with the best of TGI Fridays. Summer jobs with a lack of training. Waitress was enthusiastic but completely untrained. When you order a $200 bottle of wine, the server should know how to at least open it. Between ordering and dessert, the waitress was nowhere to be seen. No complaints about the food. Not amazing, but satisfactory. No bread or other pre-meal offering. The appitizers and main meal were served together, after a wait. Dessert menu was weak. Cappachino was very good. The place needs good supervision and staff training. It could be a fine restaurant. It's a stunning inn tucked away from the middleburg town center. I bought a day pass to the pool. I checked inside and ordered food which was delivered to be poolside. They have restrooms with free water and towels. They have a bathroom and a shower. Just only one of each so not best for busy times. The pool was cool temperature. Unfortunately there was several bees and flies around the pool that don't make it an enjoyable experience hearing a constant noise of buzzing. The pool went from 3.5 feet up to 7 feet. There was no lifeguard. The pool lounge chairs are on muddy grass surrounding the pool. The pool has the view of peaceful farm and fields of grass. It sounds like nature and buzzing of course. It was rather sunny day which was nice to relax by the pool. The server would come by often to take orders by the pool and of course deliver the food as well. We chose this restaurant for Father's Day brunch based on the menu posted online, which featured a variety of traditional brunch items, including egg dishes that would accommodate some dietary restrictions in our group. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we discovered that the restaurant was offering a completely different menu. When we asked our server about the discrepancy, he acknowledged that other guests had raised the same concern. We then asked whether it would be possible to order a simple egg dish--something as basic as scrambled eggs--but were told no. Given the circumstances, a little flexibility would have gone a long way. The service was also disappointing. Soup was delivered without a spoon, a drink order was forgotten, and after desserts were described to us, the check was brought before we had the opportunity to order one. I have had good experiences here in the past, which makes this visit particularly disappointing. Between the inaccurate online menu, the lack of accommodation, and the inattentive service, this experience fell far short of expectations. This was my first time at Goodstone, but it won't be my last. We arrived on a Saturday night to celebrate my birthday and decided on the complete trust menu. The service: attentive, detail oriented, warm. The food: to die for. The chef came to the table at one point to finish a dish for us. Overall, it made the experience that much more exciting. I loved the A5 wagyu with shaved truffles. It was so buttery and obviously very fresh. I also loved the root vegetable dish. Every detail was very well thought out. This review is for staying at the Inn, dining there for multiple meals, doing a guided farm tour, a kayak excursion, a hiking excursion, using the pool and hot tub. The entire experience was a solid 4.5 !! We did one of the rooms in the stables as they feel the most authentic and antiquated- and it did NOT disappoint! Gorgeous - well appointed- and even luxurious in its antiquities and finishes. Our room had a clawfoot tub and shower attachment and it was beautiful. All the accouterments in the bathroom for toiletries and in the mini kitchenette corner were very generous and well thought out. The font desk manager (amber I think?) was amazing in helping us line up all we wanted to do with the 48 hours we were there. The farm manager - an adorable young woman - truly made my birthday feel special with some produce and eggs we were gifted, and just helped us feel one with nature! We LOVED visiting all the animals and learning about them. The new excursions lead - a young man- made our kayaking trip fun and adventurous and we felt safe at all times, even when it started to rain. Absolutely do a hike with him and if you're lucky- some cows will come right up to you along the way ! There is a lot to do between hiking biking kayaking peddle boarding - a gorgeous salt water pool and lovely hot tub. Our room felt like an oasis in and of its self! If they installed an infrared sauna by the area were you get massages - they'd be ALL SET ! Meals at the primary restaurant were delicious - farm to table - and the BEST sorbet outside of Italy was had for desert, no lie! Loved the tavern. We're local and stopped in for a drink at the bar. You can sit at the bar and talk to the friendly concierge, great bartending staff, or you can choose to sit in big leather sofas by the fire and enjoy a romantic drink. Ehhhh! Quality to quantity to price is way off. You're being charged for a Michelin star when the food is not there. Very disappointing, honestly. We went with a party of six adults. Food was good but not THAT good. We had various dishes off the menu and everyone had the same thoughts. Excessive prices. We had, as a group, 6 main dishes and 4 appetizers plus six mixed drinks and it was $1000. That's too much for what we received, considering the quality. Overall, more like 2 1/2 stars because the restaurant decor, ambiance and grounds were immaculate and beautiful. I mean this whole place is so nice. No complaints there at all. Since we were staying at the Salamander Resort we wanted to check this place out for dinner. I was really impressed with the ambiance and the drive up to this Inn was nice. The food was on the expensive side for the portions you received but it was worth it. The bread that they have delivered here was some of the best I have had. I believe it comes from DC. We started off sharing a winter salad and the octopus. The salad was meh, I wouldn't recommend it. The octopus was very good and the habanero sauce that came with it was a great addition. The chef sent a complimentary amuse bouche that was corn bread topped with caviar and some creme. It was delightful. I wish I had more of that! For the entree, I got the Guinea Hen and my wife got the Lobster Pasta infused with squid ink. Both of these dishes were wonderful and we didn't leave anything on our plates. Finally we finished with the Affogato which was tasty but nothing spectacular. The service here was good. They take a team approach so we had a lot of people serve us, even the sommelier. We had a really lovely evening here! The setting is beautiful, the wait-staff are great, and the ambiance is cozy and modern rustic. The foie gras is creamy and delicious, and there is so much of it (not a bad thing, please keep it all!!) that it definitely needs to come with more than 3 tiny slices of brioche. The scallop crudo was hands down the best thing we ordered--it was so flavorful, tart, and creamy! The mushrooms in the squab appetizer were awesome; everything had a delicate flavor and texture and was cooked perfectly. The lobster-salmon appetizer was pretty good, but what elevated it for me was the beurre blanc--holy crap, they nailed that sauce. The beef tenderloin literally melted in my partner's mouth--it is one of the best he's had, and definitely the best in the area. The dole with lemon-butter sauce was really tasty, and the addition of perfectly creamy mashed potatoes and salty greens were such a great complement; it was also a bigger portion than I expected, and I was pleasantly full after. My only request would be a better choice of desserts and cocktails; there were only a few things to choose from and they were all pretty basic--nothing called out to us. And the espresso machine was broken, so that was disappointing at the end of a meal that we had to drive quite a ways home from as well. read more

First of all, this restaurant is unbelievably gorgeous. Floor to ceiling windows (literally, it's like sitting in a greenhouse), a roaring fire - super romantic spot. Perfect for a high end date night. The food was killer, although it was the first tasting menu I've had where you pick and choose which courses you want. I had the pickled apple salad (7/10), the scallop (10/10), the honey nut squash (9/10), pot au feu (10/10), and the salmon (10/10). This is about the restaurant-- the Inn is lovely and gorgeous. The food is good but not great or excellent. I've been to plenty of Michelin Star and James Beard award restaurants and this felt like they wanted to be that but were so far off. Portions are absurdly small and the plating is dramatic, but so sparse. The server told us twice that she was sober and couldn't comment on wine or deserts with alcohol. This ended up being such an odd experience for us. I booked a dinner for four through Open Table and when we arrived, we were told we were joining the wine dinner, a set menu accompanied by a wine pairing. This was incredibly frustrating because we didn't sign up for this specific experience and I double checked my reservation email in case I had missed something. I still don't understand where the mix-up happened. I'm also not drinking but they at least removed the cost of the wine pairing from my meal. The set menu is not one I would have willingly signed up for: I hate rabbit and squab and those were two of the dishes. 1 star off for being forced into something we didn't agree to. The next star off was for an off-putting interaction with one of the staff. She was clearly drunk or stoned, and her behavior was so unprofessional. She inserted herself into our conversation uncomfortably and then proceeded to go on a tangent about how Middleburg is pretentious, she and I are kindred spirits and lesbians, and some other odd comments. She also patted my head at one point. We were all shocked and felt so awkward. The three stars given are for how beautiful the place was and since the food was well-prepared. I did enjoy the crudo, scallop, gougere, cherry tart, and peanut brûlée. And I love the concept of the wine dinner. It's awesome when restaurants do things like this and I'm glad they're going to keep doing them. It's just not what we wanted to do with our evening. My spouse and I stayed at the Goodstone Inn a while back and we had dinner our 1st night there at the Goodstone Restaurant. I will review these 2 portions of the business in separate reviews because the reviews are different. GOODSTONE RESTAURANT This restaurant is fantastic! The food is as good as ANY I have ever had before and way better than most other fine dining restaurants. The atmosphere is rather unusual - the dining room is a modern addition to the very old main building of the inn. The dining room is completely glass, like you are surrounded by the beautiful rural Virginia nature around you. It is a 2 story open air room that manages to feel elegant and casual at the same time. The service is great from start to finish - the person who seated us was very friendly, the wait staff was very friendly, EVERYONE is friendly here! They are knowledgeable about the menu and the food too. But - let there be no doubt here - it is the food here that is the star of the show. We started our meal with 2 appetizers: wild mushroom risotto and house made ricotta. Both were fantastic. The wild mushroom risotto is a dish I have had many times at many other restaurants and the Goodstone Restaurant mushroom risotto is the best I have ever had. Bar none! Each bite was intense, creamy, comforting and woodsy. Simply delicious! The ricotta was an unusual dish. The cheese itself was creamy and luxurious. It was finely balanced against pickled veggies and some bitter greens. I have never tasted such a dish before in my life and I suspect that I never will. Bravo! My main course was venison and it was expertly prepared, seared on the outside and rare on the inside. The meat was pure and tasty. The sour cherry sauce was perfect and an enlightened addition to the meat. Truly spectacular! Goodstone Restaurant is worth the drive from the Washington DC area - even if you go just for dinner and you do not stay at the inn. The food will make you giddy with love! GOODSTONE INN This Inn is very good. There is a main building that was once the stables to a luxurious old country estate. There are several other outbuildings that are now used as guest houses. The main building is beautiful. The staff is all friendly and expert in their care & customer service. Special shout out to Sue who took my reservation and who checked us out on Sunday. She was great! We stayed at the French Farm House - one building with 3 separate bedrooms (each with its own private bathroom). This is where Goodstone starts to lose it. The room we had (the Angus Room) was nice enough, to be sure. There was nothing wrong with it. Quiet, clean and rustic in a good way. I have no complaints about the room. However, the bathroom is not up to par. There is a whirlpool tub, the old fashioned kind with thick, high sides, and the only shower is inside this tub. It is difficult to get into the tub especially for anyone shorter than 6' tall. We had to lay towels over the sides of the tub in order to get in and out (and this did NOT make it comfortable). The bathroom, further, is simply not as luxurious as the room or the Inn or the surroundings. In fact, the bathroom was dirty, dusty and yucky. The many spider webs and nests meant that nobody had cleaned the bathroom prior to our arrival. There were also dead bugs on every flat surface. NOT ACCEPTABLE! I do not mind paying $500 per night for an inn but I want a nice place to stay in for that price! The condition of the bathroom was a huge stumble for this Inn and I will have a hard time coming back to this particular room and paying that particular price for it. Maybe the rooms at the main building are better - I hope they are. Because the Goodstone Inn and the Goodstone people are doing everything they can to make a stay here truly fantastic. But I cannot tolerate another stay with a bathroom like that! I hate to say anything negative about Goodstone Inn. I really did love it there and our weekend retreat was relaxing and comfortable otherwise. But that bathroom experience was bad. read more

I came here with my mom and her friend and daughter while we were staying at the nearby Salamander Resort and Spa. The Salamander offers complementary car service to and from places nearby, which we used to attend dinner here one evening. The space is beautiful, glass all around with high ceilings. It would be nice to come here while it is still a little light out to enjoy the scenery. I ordered a dirty martini as my drink and unfortunately it came with blue stuffed olives, and i really hate blue cheese, so that was an unfortunate start to the evening. We had coffee (French press), empanadas, as well as chicken and waffles. The empanadas are a smaller dish with fruit on the side, so I would recommend getting an additional meal on top of what we ordered, but it worked for us. The property itself is also very beautiful. They have acres of land, a working farm, as well as hiking trails. It was a beautiful day and we walked around the property after having a great meal. I attended a wedding at Goodstone. Stunningly beautiful, and serene. The property is simply gorgeous. The food was good. Standouts were the beef filet, roast potatoes, and spicy crab balls. The customer service we received was excellent. The drive from DC was about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The roads leading to the inn are winding, but it wasn't a bad drive during the day. At night is an entirely different story. There are no lights and it is country dark. Think Mississippi, Alabama, no lights in the country dark. This is a lovely venue for a wedding, special occasion, or a getaway. Pictures do not do it justice. This place is really beautiful. I would definitely return, but in the future I would leave atleast 20 minutes before nightfall to allow time to get to the well-lit main road. read more

The grounds and location are lovely and our room was spacious and clean and nicely decorated. However. The bathroom is quite dated. The tub is an old jetted tub with a very wide side, making it difficult to get in and out or, especially for a short or elderly person. But more troubling is the lack of grab bars in the tub/shower enclosure. The young people who serve meals are friendly and do their best but clearly are not trained. Some of the "greeters" do not know when meals are served or when the 2 restaurants are open. The website is out of date regarding menu selections and no one seems to know. We were not advised until we arrived that no dinner was served Monday - Wednesday in the Conservatory --only in the Bistro--and no lunch on the days dinner was served in the Bistro. Now for the food: Bistro was fine although few choices. Conservatory offered Waygu steak for $140 for 4 oz. The Dover sole was $70 and way overcooked. It looked like 2 small fish sticks. The prices were absurd, given the quality and quantity of the food. The lobster appetizer was so raw i could have read a newspaper through it. In short I understand the challenges caused by the pandemic but the poor quality plus high prices were not worth ever going back or recommending this place's read more

There were two other rooms in our cottage but we rarely saw and didn't hear our neighbors at all. The was a hammock to relax in behind the cottage. We got bikes delivered and rode around the property to check out the farm and see the animals. There's a gorgeous pool to swim in and a restaurant with a bar when you get hungry. The property is very beautiful with lots of greenery and the staff were all amazing! I would definitely return here again! It's just a short drive to town where you can find other restaurants, resorts, and wineries as well! read more

My boyfriend and I had the 6 course tasting menu. We arrived just after 6:30 and one of the first tables to be seated. Goodstone takes slow eating to an extreme. We were one of the last tables to leave at 10:30 pm. Courses were 30 minutes apart, and I think this was on purpose and not because the kitchen was too busy. All the other tables seemed to gotten the fixed price meal and were in and out. After a while, I was tired and a little bored (not a statement against my boyfriend but it's a long time just to be sitting there). The waiter even noticed and apologized. Perhaps if it was a large group of people, this would have been acceptable timing. But for 2 people, 4 hours was extreme and I wish I had known before selecting the tasting menu. Other than the timing, the meal was lovely. The wine list was extensive and I found the perfect wine for the evening. (At $110 a bottle, I tried to make it last through the evening, which was difficult at 4 hours). The beet salad was a nice start. My favorite was the sunchoke soup and slow poached lobster. The flavors were amazing. The pheasant was good, but a little dry. Loved the croquette that accompanied the meal, wish there was more than one. The P'tit Basque cheese course was delicious. The apple cake for dessert was a little difficult to cut with a fork, and they had taken the knives away. (So it wasn't melt in your mouth moist but good). I loved the little extra chocolates they gave at the end. It was delicious! So was the oyster at the beginning. I struggled with the rating as the whole timing made the evening drag on and the food seemed underwhelming towards the end. Perhaps a warning that the tasting menu would take so long would have changed our minds. I wanted to review the rooms separately but seems I can't write a second review. We loved staying on the property. We stayed in the French Farm Cottage in the Angus Room. Since we were off season, we were the only ones in the cottage. The room was comfortable and had very nice touches to make it warm and relaxing (thank you for the heater in the bathroom as it was chilly in there otherwise). I wish the weather was nicer so we could sit outside and enjoy a bottle of wine. Next trip!! read more

This place deserves all 5 of the Yelp stars for multiple reasons. Let's start with the location. You begin your journey up a hill, almost to a point where you aren't really sure where you're headed to (which is kinda fun). Once you reach the top, you're exposed to miles and miles of land, accompanied with this beautiful, one-of-a-kind properties. I can only imagine the beauty of this place in the summer time, if I'm saying all of this during the winter. Entering the inn, you're greeted with friendly staff, as you are escorted into the dining area. Passing through the main lobby, I noticed Monopoly, Clue, and various other games set up for guests to play before or after meals, or if they just wanted to pass the time. Head down stairs to the dining area, equip with open windows and a fireplace. We attended the fixed menu Sunday brunch with 2-4 options, per course. I went with the butternut squash soup, cod, and chocolate dessert. For starters, the soup was AMAZING and actually grown locally in their garden, which is a huge plus. The cod was perfectly cooked, practically melting in your mouth, accompanied with a smooth, potato-like sauce. Lastly, the chocolate dessert put my mouth in heaven and over the moon, with the light, delicate chocolate mousse, cake, and ice cream. My date chose the steak, which was amazingly prepared as well, accompanied with potatoes and spinach. Honestly, I'm sure the whole menu would've been amazing! One more perk was being presented with a stool for your purse (lol!), which was a cute touch. The staff was so friendly and warm, instantly making me feel right at home. What a gem this place is!
