Couldn't find it at the normal supermarkets or anywhere else I normally go so I tried here and bingo, they new exactly what I wanted and where it was in the shop, and at a decent price as well. What was it I was after your probably asking yourself about now, well I'll tell you, even though there may be a real danger of causing a stampede to all the Asian supermarkets. But first there is the obligatory story to read, enjoy..... My sister introduced me to these on a recent day trip to Mount Martha, we stopped at the service station and shops on citylink for some brunch and at one of these shops they had beans or edamame as a substitute to chips. Well I decided to give them a go on her recommendation and we bought a tub of beans and a tub of edamame, we then sprinkled some Himalyan salt on them and devoured the lot. I preferred the edamame over the beans, they were also fun to squeeze out of their pods so I have been looking for them in shops ever since. So here I am ready to explore another bunch of new experiences in food from my local Asian supermarket, I can't wait. What are edamame you ask, they are soybean pods, who'd have thought it. Boil them up, add a little salt and get squeezing,Yum.

I love checking out NQR every now and then for the completely random range of items they stock…read more Although you cant bet on finding a winner every time, I usually leave with a swag of food, whether it be favourites for a discounted price, or something I haven't seen before that grabs my attention. Great for if you are having a party and need to stock up on finger food and dips etc, as the stuff is ready to eat and you'll save a bunch of great food that people are most likely going to devour whilst drunk. Basically, if you don't know how it works, NQR get regular brands of food, drinks, groceries and alcohol and sell them really cheap. These are brands you'll know of that might only have a month left on the expiry, or wound up here because they weren't selling well. However they get here is none of my business, all I'm concerned about is the fun of finding bizarre food items and buying them.

An aisle full of different varieties of sauces sits opposite an aisle full of different kinds of noodles. There are also packets of countless dried vegetables and legumes, perfect for your next curry. Oddly, there's also an aisle stocking a mixed bag of western food, including Arnott's Shapes, Pringles and every energy drink under the sun. The frozen section is full of ready to cook at home snacks. Spring rolls, tofu and many other Asian favourites are all here, and decently priced to boot.

What I like about Maxi is the odd items you wont find at Coles. The cereal section for instance is a do-it-yourself affair, where you pick and choose form open canisters and fill up your bag of muesli or cereal by weight. The shelves too are quite industrial, and it gives the place a warehouse feel that most city stores would consider boutique.

Like the previous reviewer I am impressed with the extensive range of specialty products, in addition their fresh meat provides extensive choice and cuts as well as bulk product. The fishmonger is the best in Ferntree Gully, excellent range and many prepared from fresh whole fish. The range of fruit and vegetables is good, however this is one area that from my experience doesn't compete well on price. Finally they appear to employ a range of staff, from young to mature age, they are friendly and you see the same faces over the years. I guess I can take comfort in knowing that my spend is supporting an Australian medium size business.

Some…read moreclever person decided it would be a good idea to move things around so now not so quick and fairly frustrating. It is fairly clean and was well laid out. It has friendly, knowledgeable staff and a great deli dept. They do a pretty good job of keeping the shelves stocked though sometimes when things are on special they are empty. There is stacks of parking which is usually well utilised. I prefer Coles over Woolworths as there is better parking really but I still shop at both. Always lots of specials and it tells me how much I saved on the receipt. Don't bother checking the back of your receipts for some great local offers as they no longer do that. Pretty disappointed in the backward steps they are taking.
