Love a good friendly neighbourhood store! It's big enough to have the essentials, but small enough you still need to go to a big woolies when you actually need something special. Very friendly staff and replenish most things quite quickly! read more

When I finally realized 2 DAYS LATER, (yes, that's how distracted I was) I was prepared to accept the loss as bad luck and it was almost a week later that I revisted the store to do some more shopping, WITHOUT the 2 year old this time! One look at me and Donna said, "You left something here last time!" She ran out back and emerged with the forgotten shopping bag! I couldn't believe it! I was so pleased because I was about to purchase the same stuff all over again! Thanks Donna. It's customer service such as this that will keep me coming back to your shop. I hope your employers know what an asset they have in you.

Looking for ingredients for an Asian meal, I headed off to Madam Hoo. I can practically guarantee…read morethat she will have whatever I need. I have been going to Madam Hoo for several years. Not only does she have the weird and wonderful but she also carries a lot of frozen products such a pork buns, gow gees and dim sims that you can steam at home. The variety is unbelievable. If you can get past the weird and wonderful packets of strange items, which I am not sure whether you eat or use as medicine, I realise that although Madam Hoo sells them, I don't actually need a rice cooker this week. It's an absolute wonderland of food and small appliances, newspapers and DVD's. I bypass the Asian sweets but hang around the noodles, fresh and dried. I finally end up near the vegetables. We're lucky in Castle Hill to have lots of local growers so the vegetables are as fresh as can be. The shop is full to capacity with stock and in some places its hard to maneuver but that's half the fun. My visit to Madam Hoo is finished,I only have to pay but I am always happy to hand over my money because Madam Hoo is quite inexpensive. For $20 you can get a whole basket of things. Why go to the larger supermarkets for Asian products when you can go to Madam Hoo - I love her.

To my surprise, the same bag costing ~$23-28 in other places was almost double at $40 upon arrival on the counter - note prices for the rice were NOT marked on shelf. This is a far comparison from even the few other asian grocers within 1-5km radius such as that within Castle Mall or Baulkham Hills or even that compared to my previous shopping region of Pacific Square in Maroubra. Sure, I could accept that the store rental is dear within Castle Towers. HOWEVER, upon opening the rice bag, I find it crawling with small insects. These insects were also revealed upon retrieving the bag from the rack. I should've suspected earlier. Perhaps it was a bad batch, or perhaps from bad storage or lack of stock flow due to the prices. In business, I understand that you either float or sink; but this is one way of staying afloat that will guarantee the floundering of the business. I for one will not being returning, but hope that this review may change your future practice.

Also found frozen pelmeni (Russian dumplings), Went to the pet supply area, and saw a variety of dog treats, including one probably found only in Australia: Kangaroo tail disks. I can't believe I'm reviewing a supermarket but I wished I'd seen a review of Aldi before I decided…read moreto shop here. Ok, so I get that it's a discount supermarket and things like service and cleanliness take a back seat to low, low prices on everything, everyday but Aldi take it to the absolute limit. The shelves a scantly stacked in a seemingly random order, I mean, who puts baby wipes next to chocolate and tuna next to seeds and nuts? Admittedly, they have some killer bargains on some of the most random stuff and the prices are really, really good. One thing I can't recommend highly enough is the meat. I kid you not, theses steaks are the bomb, better than other supermarkets and turbo lean. If you've got a sweet tooth, you'll love the extraordinarily large range of European sweet delights. The fruit and veg is inconsistent but averages out at poor. If you want to put your groceries in a trolley, it'll cost you $2 (you get it back when you return the trolley) or you can buy a branded key chain with a little token on it to replace your $2 coin. alternatively, you can drag a basket behind you. The checkout is an experience in itself - it's like Supermarket Sweep on steroids. There's this unspoken game between you and the checkout staff as to who can scan/pack faster. I win. Overall, it's not a terrible experience, you can do 80% of your shopping here but you will still need to visit a regular supermarket. The annoying part is, being in the middle of North Sydney, what you save on groceries, you make up for in parking.

As for food, the quality is a lot better than what I had expected! Can find a lot of basics. Great corn chips, chips, chocolate snacks, pastries... Not so good olive oil. Despite the $2 difference, I felt bad for those caged hens popping out eggs like machines and picked up the free-range ones instead.
