We can barely contain the joy we feel when we go into our new music retreat and think about just how HartmanBaldwin made in all come together. This is our last house, and if I had tried to manage this myself the end result would have paled in comparison to what they helped us to create. Everyone who goes through a remodel talks about how bad it is, how they wanted to cry, or even get a divorce. Hiring Bill Baldwin and his staff changes that dynamic completely to meetings where you talk about CREATION. A perfect example was a niche for an autographed guitar that I own. Imagine three designers talking about how to "honor" it and exploring lighting options for an hour. My wife and I could go on and on about the details I never would have thought of. The workers are an extension of that. They spent days making sure the drywall finish was flawless, as was the paint. Derrick who was in charge the electrical gets it. He understands that lighting is everything. Everyone from Reg the Project Manager to Myranda the decorator and Sarah the architect went beyond to make this something that was fun instead of something to suffer through. I'm a business owner and my time is precious. Letting go of it to turn it over to detailed professionals that CARE was a smart business decision for me. Because of the structural and electrical scope, I decided to build fully permitted and up to code. I hired Artoo twice. About 18 months ago I bought a one-time consultation. The consult fee is not cheap, but it's totally worth it. I got a full preview of everything that would be required for my project - sizing of structural members, ratings for materials, and what would (and wouldn't) fly with city inspectors. I also got a handful of solutions for things I didn't know how to handle. The meeting really streamlined my planning and thinking about design tradeoffs. The second time I hired Artoo (December) was to do the full construction plans. I met with Ramy to do an updated plan review and for him to take some measurements. I really felt like he was taking my input and we were working together on the final details. Then the quality of the drawings themselves are impeccable. In a previous life I did heavy AutoCAD drafting, so I'm very picky about drawings being accurate and complete. They were also turned around really fast. Much faster than I could have drawn in my prime. Next was probably the best part - Ramy said he would help with any notes from the city plan review process. I was worried how that would go. We had to do some revisions, but it was totally painless thanks to hiring the right company. I felt unstoppable with Ramy as a partner, and I got everything I wanted approved by the city. I'm writing this review today (August) because I had another small question about the plans, and Ramy basically answered my email immediately. Super tight customer service. I don't always have the budget or time to build things right. Artoo Design is one of those companies you should hire when quality and time is important. He then asked if I had a budget, I replied yes and he proceeded the say, "I am sure not enough." After 20 minutes of looking around our home he said he would call me in a couple days to schedule an appointment so we can discuss fees and plans for the house. I haven't heard from him in a week nor do I want to. We purchased a home in a nice neighborhood and the floor plan is not perfect, which is the reason for the remodel. Anyway, I find his highbrow attitude uncalled for and definitely in poor taste.

We hired Ron to do the architectural plans for the remodel of a fourplex. He came in with a fancy camera scanner to measure everything, a very efficient process. He was very much on time with the delivery of the initial draft. We discussed minor changes and submitted to the city, and they had just had a few minor corrections before approval, which is better than other architectural teams I have worked with. After we began work on the project, we discovered a beam in the ceiling was not pointing in the right direction, leading to the need for a revision to the plans. The engineer Margarito went on site and approved changes, which allowed us to quickly adapt. Overall this was a very streamlined process, I would be happy to use his services in the future and can very much recommend him.

Deservedly so. Ray and Leslie are a gem. Their team, including Michael Song and Pilar Mutec, were a pleasure to work with. I am fairly detail oriented and Pilar was so easy to work with through my multiple design changes. She showed me multiple renderings and made changes as requested on the renderings, with Mike amending the plans as needed. All the while guiding me along the way. I was minutes away from getting a variance from the DWP to allow my ADU to come within the set back from the power poles when the Palisades' fire started. The EZ Plan's team fully cooperated when the DWP said no, and redrew my plans from scratch. They helped me qualify the contractors and walked me through the differences in the bids. Whenever I had a question during the construction process, they were there to help and guide me along the way. But unfortunately, the staff architect who was assigned to work with us designed something quite fancy that we couldn't afford to build. So the project just stalled out right there, and we were ready to ditch the whole thing. To put it mildly, we were quite distressed! Thank goodness for Laurel and Mark! They quickly produced a remodel design that took maximum advantage of the existing structures and unique features of our property.
