The locksmith from the Lock Doctor came and just bent a piece of metal in the mechanism that had become warped in the cold weather. Needless to say, the bill was nowhere near $895. BTW, the Lock Doctor locksmith told me there is a nationwide scam going on with locksmiths. I found an article at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19714358/ if you want to learn more. If the locksmith you are using wants to be paid upfront, jacks up the price after doing the work, or works out of a fake address, you should beware. The first locksmith I had called had an address at 14th and Park roads right around the corner from me, but I later went by there and there was no locksmith anywhere on the block. Postscript: someone noted that the locksmith I recommend doesn't have a specific address, which is kind of funny given my comments above. I believe he works only on-site and doesn't maintain a physical store front (as scammer locksmith I used first fraudulently advertised). He lives in Logan Circle, so that represents the area from which he works.

He tried for over 30 minutes to fix this fob... he said he had to help another customer and I also had to leave for a little, and he was willing to stay after business hours for me to come back and try again. I walked 10 minutes and found this key kiosk in the parking lot of Shoppers. The owner was able to copy my keys perfectly. This is also includes a particular DC mailbox key. I live in the Brookland/Pleasant Hills area by Catholic University. It was worthwhile to go to this key kiosk. I got what I needed. Finally! Their hours are Mon-Fri 11am-3pm. We had Joseph out to our new house to repair a broken door handle, to replace three locks, and to…read morechange out two handsets. (I found Tivoli through a paid advertisement for Tivoli locksmiths on Cleveland Park listserv.) Upon examining the doors, he said that he was unable to change out the handsets because to do so would require drilling, and he considered that beyond his expertise. He also said that he was unable to replace the locks on the existing handsets, but he was able to make new keys. I thought it was very disappointing that someone who claimed to have 33 years of experience was unable to change a lock - and I should have followed my instincts and asked him to leave. When I went to lock the doors I found that Joseph had not repaired the broken door handle on my old french doors. The handle was loose and still hanging brokenly at an odd angle, and when lifted it would flop brokenly and not engage the locking mechanism. As a result, the door could not lock. When I called Joseph to point out that he must not have tested the keys and that he had left me with a broken door handle that would not lock, he screamed at me, saying that he left everything perfectly, and that I must be stupid and confused and clearly didn't know what I was talking about. He screamed at me for 10 minutes as I tried to persuade him to at least let me send him a video so I could prove that I knew how to use the door and that the handle was actually broken. He refused to listen to me and he refused to look at the video. I tried to reason with him, but could not get a word in with his shouting at me. I have never had such a bad and abusive experience with a contractor. This person is incompetent and treats his customers horribly. I am shocked that he remains in business. UPDATE. The locksmith came back to my house later that evening, and fortunately my husband opened the door (I would probably have called the police ). Husband took Joseph outside, where he was shocked to discover that the door handle he'd worked on was indeed completely busted. At that point he apologized to my husband for his rudeness to me over the phone, refunded our money, and promised to repair the door handle. He's come back to the house a couple of times since, but he has been unable to repair the lock. I do give him credit for apologizing and trying to make the situation right. I am raising this review to 3 stars just for that. UPDATE. Joseph came back a couple of times, but was unable to repair the old lock and eventually just stopped coming. In the meantime, my general contractor was able to install the new electronic locks on my old doors. It took a couple of hours in total and it was not at all necessary to buy new doors, as Joseph had insisted.
