Sure Fit did excellent work on the installation of front door and closet locks in my condo. Their prices are reasonable too.

The biggest problem is they treat people in a VERY condescending manner. Slow to acknowledge they've made a mistake. Even when it's their mistake they'll charge you a "call" to come fix their mistake. Communication is so poor. If you speak with one person and call back later, the rest of the staff is either too incompetent to deal with the call and/or just doesn't care. You're made to wait, "He's gone for the day, so you'll need to call back tomorrow or Monday." They've gotten by on their past reputation. But according to SF it's always your mistake and never theirs. So I'll get another contractor to reinstall 2 locks that I told SF had problems! Their records are handwritten--which ensured they can't be hacked. If you're there at 5pm, they'll close the shop around you. read more

I lost the key to my bicycle hitch after a long trip from Florida to DC. I ordered replacement keys from the manufacturer, but these would have taken several days to ship and be delivered. I had a very complicated problem, not worth the time it would take for a locksmith to solve it. I was amazed at the cooperation and effort that Sure-Fit put into my problem. 30 years ago, when our house was built, I had Medeco high-security locks put in, using a high-security keyway so that keys could not be duplicated without my signature. The locks are still working just great, all this time later. But I wanted to order a couple more keys. I called the locksmith, but they're gone. Turns out that a good bit of subsequent investigation on my part showed that they are actually long gone. No hope of tracing them or records of our keys or our license for the high-security keyway. I called the nearest Medeco locksmith, and they told us that they wouldn't make keys for us. They insisted on installing new keyways on all of our locks before they would make keys. We have five of these, so that would be perhaps $1,000 or more in needless expense. So I called Medeco. I sent them a key, and they decoded it. They gave me a list of Medeco locksmiths in the DC area. The second one I called was Sure-Fit. I described the problem, and the person I talked to said that they'd get back to me. Next thing I knew I was talking to Jim Mullins, president of Sure-Fit. He said that there was a contract problem--their contract with Medeco restricts them from making keys for Medeco locks that they don't install. Jim then worked with Theresa Nester of Medeco, who in turn worked with Medeco's contracts department to give Sure-Fit an exemption from that provision of their contract so that they could take over my account. I've now completed all the paperwork to transfer the account, and in a few days I'll place my order for keys. Thinks are now set up so that my wife and I can now order new keys by telephone. Have you ever found a company president who would do so much to save a customer $1,000, when it meant his company not getting that money? Jim Mullins is an exceptional person, and it's easy to see why his company has so many GREAT reviews on Yelp. I'd be comfortable having Sure-Fit do any locksmithing job, and I wouldn't even bother to get competitive bids. These are the people I want to do all of my locksmithing work. read more

I don't think I ever meet anyone as patience as Carl in a customer facing position. I came to Sure-Fit today to pick-up some keys for the dorms at my job. Yes, the college babies are back from summer break. This was a last minute request but Carl handled it like a champ. Even in the mix of some miscommunication and certain keys he admitted might not have been cut right, his customer service never lacked one bit. Carl stepped up, and stepped in to make sure everything will be resolved. If you ever need any extra security measures or keys made, Carl is the man. While visiting my sister in Takoma Park, she asked if I could be handyman on several lock issues. I called Sure-Fit, and spoke to "Carl", describing my problem: I had a 1910 lock with a broken spring. Could they repair it? I also had a 1" thick storm door. Did they have a lock to fit it? Carl asked me to send pictures so he could be ready when I arrived. Twenty minutes later I handed Carl the broken lock, purchased his recommended storm door lock (which he rekeyed to match my other outside keys), and had him rekey a 3rd lock I was installing to match the rest. He showed me several different options (so much easier in-person vs. studying Amazon pages), and completed both the repair and rekeying within a few hours. I couldn't be happier. After a change in staff we were looking to get new keys cut for various doors and installing new key locks on old doors. They were very accommodating. I inherited restricted Sure-Fit lock systems at both my office and my home, so I've had a number of opportunities to interact with them over the past few years. At first, I definitely balked at the cost for making a single key, especially when I'm the kind of person who always like to have extra keys just in case... That said, the process you have to go through (just the first time) to open a new account is rigorous - I even had to bring in a copy of my deed of sale for the new house! I'd never really thought about it... but those $3.95 keys you can get cut at any hardware store are super easy for anyone to copy if they have your keychain at the auto-shop, etc etc etc. With a surefit restricted key, no one can copy the key except our authorized list of users, standing in front of them with a photo id. I do feel a bit safer, honestly. Plus the staff has always been helpful, and I like knowing exactly who I'd call if I ever were to lock myself out or whatever. read more

So helpful! I lost the key to my filing cabinet and called Sure-Fit Security to schedule a locksmith appointment. Instead, over the phone, they walked me through the steps to find a keycode on my cabinet, which they had in stock. So I drove to the shop 10 minutes later and the key was ready to go. Company has very professional locksmiths, but am disappointed with rates and hours of service available. If you buy a lock elsewhere they will charge you $150/hr (time and a half) to install it. Also, they say its a free estimate, but then charge you $70 "separate" call fee, that you have to pay, but they say they credit your account, so essentially you are locked in to having to do business with the higher than normale hourly rates. rip off. read more

I came home and my key would not open the front door lock. I called another locksmith firm, and they sent out a tech who drilled out the cylinder and opened the door. He said that a pin the lock cylinder was broken and that a "bar" in the mortise ( a box holding the door locking mechanism) was also. He wanted over $600 to replace the entire lock. I took the parts to Sure-Fit, and within 10 seconds they determined that the mortise was OK and that all that was needed was a new lock cylinder for $38. The installation tech was very good. The VP and customer service for organizing the scheduling and contacting me regarding appointment, quote and status was horrible. Non-existent, actually. I had to contact them to get my quote after waiting 2 weeks. Also had to call two weeks later to find out my appointment was set up for 2 days later. And the price they quoted was different than the price they quoted the insurance company, so now I am out $1700. In dealing with the VP to express my concerns, he continued to be degrading and tell me it was my fault and provided no assistance or empathy. Absolutely horrible experience. Would recommend that others use ANY other company than this one. read more

I want one item when I go to a locksmith, spare keys. Without a doubt, this place can probably duplicate any key known to man. I know because apparently my keys are very difficult to make. I had to go back 3 times for them to get the right fit. I will say that albeit for the hassle of going back 3 times, the owner really cares about his customers and they try to do everything possible to make the lets work. We made two trips to SureFit to get our keys copied. The first trip we had zero of 2 keys correctly copied, so we returned a few weeks later. The second trip we had one of 2 keys correctly copied.
