Yesterday, after a doctor appointment in the Fort Norfolk area, we had enough time for some exploration, My friend had grown up in Atlantic City, the neighborhood taken by eminent domain to build Norfolk General Hospital. Relatives lived on some of the streets near Fort Norfolk Medical Plaza. One of the first places we chose to explore was Woodis Avenue. We drove slowly so she could see if there was anything recognizable remaining. Much to my surprise one of the first things I noticed was a door with the 13 News Now / ABC logo on the door. It was only then that I remembered their studios were on Woodis Avenue. The building has a nice urban feel and sits flush with the sidewalk. It's a multi story well kept brick building that speaks well for its Tegna ownership. A parking lot sits directly across the street, possibly for employee use. Having met my husband when we both worked for a Media Group (radio, television & cable) in Atlanta during the late 70's, my theme should be "I brake for television stations." There was plenty of street parking available. So I was able to walk the sidewalks and peruse the difference in technology in the almost 50 years that have passed. How fascinating to see a dish farm & transmission tower located in the small area directly adjacent to the building, which must contain offices & studios. I'm assuming the tower must be to relay signals to its main transmission tower in Driver. The dish farm speaks as much to technological changes as do smart phones & the Internet, which didn't exist in the time period I was in the business. Only cable systems had dishes then. They were humongous and usually just one per head end. I walked the connecting street and saw the remote broadcast vehicles in a nearby parking lot. One more look at the dish farm & tower and it was time to move on. I had walked from 1977 to 2025 on the sidewalks of Woodis Avenue. Thank you WVEC for providing such quality news & programming. You'll continue to be my station of choice.

There was a major renovation in 2023. Virtual studio tours are available. The studio is shared by its sister station WVBT. WAVY's transmitter is in Suffolk. The current owner is Nexstar Media Group, The first station broadcast was on September 1, 1957 as an ABC affiliate. It has undergone many changes of ownership. One of the company's that owned the station was Lin Broadcasting. A former President of that company happened to be someone I worked closely with in my job a zillion years ago while working for a media group based in Atlanta. The station also swapped network affiliations with WVEC, the current local ABC affiliate, In my opinion WAVY has an excellent news and weather organization. They operate their own Doppler Weather, which is appreciated by this weather geek. In particular I enjoy their noon news. The anchor and meteorologist have great rapport. Bringing laughter and joy into a world with bad news every day is important. I particularly like Don Slater, their Chief Meteorologist Emeritus. He retired and then decided he missed the job. I'm so glad. He makes weather fun and you feel his excitement in covering big weather events. He is funny, which I love. Duties are split with the beginning of the week covered by a new meteorologist, who is young and personable. NBC itself airs a lot of shows and sports that I enjoy. Thank you WAVY, the Call Sign that well describes our Coastal area, for being my news & weather fix.

Importantly, it makes a point of focusing on a particular problem (such as an issue at a nursing home) then pulls back to examine the systemic issues (such as poor state oversight) that may be contributing to the problem. There's a weird review on here falsely claiming WTVR is pro-Democratic party. The claim makes no sense, as the network does so much critical reporting on city and the state governance, which happens to be dominated by -- Democrats. Non-partisan journalism is important to me, as it is to most viewers. Nothing in WTVR's news coverage reflects bias for or against any political party.

I was super impressed with the news team personalities. Very polished and polite. Equipment seems to be all up-to-date and the studio is bright and cheery, seemingly with all of the required bells and whistles.

If it is raining they will talk about the umbrellas...people want to hear the news, not how you feel about aspect of it. Their polls are not scientific and are worded with a liberal slant.
