Fast forward to the present. I found a way to coerce the ol' iPod into working again, but day in and day out, I find that I prefer actually learning something about the world while I take my morning commute. 9 times out of 10 I'm tuning in to 97.3FM to hear the broad range of local and international talk, news, and music radio. Not to say that I don't get down with some Morning Edition and All Things Considered on 88.9, but sometimes you need to hear journalism from a little outside of your comfort zone. 97.3FM is the only place in the area that you can tune in to Democracy Now, Harry Shearer's Le Show, Tell Me More with Michel Martin, and Talk of the Nation with Neal Conan, among many, many other programs through the day. Also once a week, history nerds can get stoked on listening to Clay Jenkinson on the Thomas Jefferson Hour, and food nerds can drool while listening to Lynne Rossetto Kasper's The Splendid Table. And sometimes I get effing tired of listening to classical and jazz music ad nauseum. There, I said it. I said what's really on the minds of public radio listeners. 97.3FM really mixes up the musical offerings around RVA, and in any one night you can expect to hear punk, jazz, funk, hip-hop, zydeco, country, rockabilly, "folk," or whatever. The only downside is the very limited broadcast area, due to the "Low Power" designation. Depending on the day, I have reception north to past VCC, south to around 288, east to just past the airport, and west past Short Pump. Tune in and check it out. There's something for everyone on WRIR.

I recently started listening to this station. I am a fan of Top 40 music, but get tired of some of…read morethe other local stations' focus on the bubble-gum hits. This station throws in more hip-hop, rap and R&B tunes for a better mix. Also, they actually play music in the morning. Since there aren't too many local morning talk shows any more, and I'm not a big fan of any national morning personalities, I like that I can just listen to hits on my way to work. No stupid games or DJs who think they're a lot funnier than they actually are. Also, as another reviewer noted, they tend to throw in some old stuff, but not old like the annoying songs from last month, old like "oh, I haven't heard this song for a while and am happy to hear it again." This may be my new standard local station.

Frankly I also like this station because they play more than just whatever the number one song of the week is. The Top 40 station on XM plays the same three songs on repeat, but this station tosses in some older stuff... like Tupac on my way home tonight, and Biggie yesterday afternoon. I like that they play some stuff I haven't heard in a while, keeps me on my toes. If you like Top 40, check this station out. Its arguably just as good as the Top 40 station on XM, and maybe better.

Ok this probably makes me super old, but I really like this station…read more I must caveat this by saying I'm not a huge local radio fan, I usually listen to XM (I am ashamed to admit that) or I plug in my Ipod while I drive. However, this week I drove my husband's car, which is sans XM and my Ipod is dead, so I ended up listening to the radio. I felt very 1999... I was searching around for good tunes, etc. Anyway, I stumbled upon this station because they were playing a song from the late 90s that I legitimately haven't heard in a million years.... Never There by Cake. They are committed to playing 53 minutes of music per hour (which is pretty decent... I can deal with 7 mins of ads over the course of an hour...) and they don't talk over songs... CLUTCH. So fine, I'm not sure I heard the latest Coldplay song on there, and I don't think Katy Perry songs will be on there anytime soon. But they played Hey Jealousy recently, and if you don't believe you can check out their playlist on their website... Try them out. If you really like them- you can listen online whenever you want! They recently fired one of the morning show cast members, moved the other to a less desirable time slot and began playing a syndicated morning show that's not locally based. This really made me mad. There already aren't very many Richmond morning show options, and I'm sorry, but I don't want to listen to stupid crap from some guy who isn't in my town on the way to work. Music-wise, Q94 plays your typical top 40 bubblegum hits. This is the station where Miley Cyrus hits get a lot of play. This is okay with me sometimes as I like mainstream music, but I do get sick of hearing a few "hot" songs played over and over and over and over and over and over. So I guess I can handle Q94 in small doses, but now that there are other top 40 music options in town that play more of a mix, I don't really listen to this station too much anymore.
