As a WXXI member and a listener of their AM programming we are big fans so it was nice to finally tour their facilities as part of the Landmark Society's Inside Downtown Tour. We caught the last tour of the day conducted by long time docent Peggy - she did a very nice job talking about the different studios, the programming, and some of the technical aspects of the place. One of the country's best classical music stations broadcast out of upstate New York. While some classical stations are content to recycle the same pieces endlessly, WXXI steps up with performances from Glimmerglass, Wolf Trap, Chicago, and the orchestras of Cleveland, Dallas, and Santa Fe. One can hear classical music from all over the US. An Empire State of mind. They have unique shows like "Classical Guitar Alive" and "With Heart and Voice." Their Sunday morning programs focus on sacred music. It's refreshing. WXXI is the call sign for the public media company that provides PBS TV coverage and NPR radio coverage for the Rochester, New York, metropolitan area. Most of the nation (including myself) would never have heard of WXXI if it weren't the host radio station for Richard Gladwell's wonderful program, "With Heart and Voice" (WHV), that is syndicated weekly to over 100 stations around the country. WHV features organ and choral music and, in most markets, is broadcast early on Sunday morning. In Houston where I live, you can hear it from 7:00 to 8:00 AM on KUHF FM. The program always opens and closes with the distinctive organ work, Trumpet Tune in D Major by David Johnson. Because Gladwell is originally from England, his programming highlights sacred music of the Anglican tradition in particular. He has a massive collection of recordings and features professional and church choirs from all around the world in addition to the fantastic boy treble voices found in the University and Cathedral choirs across England. I find listening to WHV a great way to celebrate the glory of God before even rolling out of bed to shower, shave, munch on a few kolaches and attend Church on Sunday mornings. Richard Gladwell is very generous with his time and knowledge of choral music. I've emailed him in the past to ask for recommendations for recordings of specific anthems in the choral repertoire after explaining my preferences. He has always returned my email promptly with his thoughts. I've purchased what he suggested and found he had impeccable taste. If you want to find a surefire way to lift your spirits early on Sundays, WHV is just what the doctor ordered. read more

WXXI - Radio Stations Near Me - Rochester, New York

Probably closer to 3.5 stars, if truth be told. As a nearly full-time classical music station, I must applaud them for remaining with their music programming choice. However, in the last 3-4 years, I have noticed a distinct slide towards mediocrity. First, when long-time morning morning radio personality Simon Pontin retired, his replacement(s) were nowhere near as educated, experienced, or as interesting. Then, they statrted adding more commercial shows that were pretty far from 'classical' music (like Stage Notes, etc). Also, overnight, the music is from some national feed, and the music is often rather banal. Hopefully, they will turn things around soon, or I may have to lower my score. read more

PBS offers great TV programs. Unfortunately WXXI TV off the air broadcast has poor reception and too many broadcast difficulties. Recently it has been off the air for almost 2 days. In today's age of cord cutting and TV streaming it is seems ridiculous. Hopefully they will improve in the future. read more

I love the PBS kid's shows on in the morning for my young children. Clifford, sesame street, caillou, etc are all great shows that my children enjoy watching. read more
