Woodland Opera House is actually a state historic park/place/landmark and is one of four fully functioning 19th-century opera houses in California. The two-story brick building is at the heart of the Downtown Woodland Historic District. My first time attending WOH shows were "Tom Sawyer" in 2008, "Alexander Who Is Not, Not, Not, Not, Not, Not, Going to Move" in 2009, and "All Shook Up" in 2010 to see my then-actor-now-artistic director friend Elio Gutierrez-Montoya. Although I continued to be around the Davis/Woodland area for work, I admit I haven't been back to the Opera House for a mainstage production until this season's showing of Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Located at Second and Main, easy to walk a few blocks to restaurants. Parking is free on weekends (Dead Cat Alley), and shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm. The runtime for Hunchback was 2.5 hours with a 15-minute intermission. New Covid Policy effective March 1, 2022: In accordance with the updated indoor mask requirements from the State of California and Yolo County, masks are no longer required in the Woodland Opera House facilities. Orchestra seats (adult) were only $25, and these are cushioned seats (we got Row J, aisle) with a great view of the stage. Balcony seats are cheaper but bench-style. This was a fantastic show, especially the leads for Frollo, Quasimodo, Esmeralda and Phoebus...don't underestimate the level of talent/training just because it's a smaller venue/production. During the second act, the microphone for Quasimodo seemed to go out which was too bad. From the orchestra level we could still hear him singing even with the music but I wonder if the balcony could hear when he was speaking. Mainstage productions (5) typically run from September to June. The next one is "Bye Bye Birdie" but I'm also looking forward to "In the Heights" in August 2022. The campus is gorgeous that it sits on and the Center is absolutely beautiful inside. What I love most about the seating inside is that it's designed well with comfortable seats that aren't crammed together and you can actually enjoy the show. There are vents under each seat to keep you cool, which is also a plus on warmer seasons. The sound quality here is absolute perfection as well and I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't feel the same way as I do about this wonderful venue! What a true gift it is to have near us! Because of that, even though I've lived nearby for more than 20 years, I never made it out to a show. I finally made an exception to see the legendary Herbie Hancock at Jackson Hall, the larger venue that seats about 1,800 people. Even from the upper section, the sound was phenomenal. The acoustics are honestly some of the best I've experienced. The one downside to sitting up there is the seating layout: the rows are tight, and unlike other sections, there are no aisles. If someone in the middle needs to step out, the entire row--around 20 people on each side--has to shuffle to make room. Not ideal, especially for long shows without an intermission. Parking is close, but even on a Sunday (when parking is usually free), the lot across from the venue charged $19. Drinks are allowed inside only if they have lids, and there are no cupholders at the seats. Minor things, but they add up. Jackson Hall is a beautiful venue, and it definitely carries a "posh" or "elite" reputation that seems fairly accurate--it feels geared toward a more academic crowd. I probably won't return soon based on the current lineup, but seeing Herbie Hancock there was absolutely worth it.

Totally impressed that this theater group is run entirely by students. They put on plays as well as…read moremusicals complete with a band. Not only are all the actors students, but the artistic staff are also comprised of students and recent alumni. I have seen their productions of the play 'Spring Awakening' as well as the rock opera musical 'Rent'. I was impressed by the caliber of acting talent in 'Spring Awakening' -- their performance evoked a lot of emotion in a very challenging play. Before seeing 'Rent' I was dubious that a student group would be able to pull off an intense rock musical, but they did a great job. The theater itself is very unique -- Wyatt Pavillion used to be a barn -- so the director has to be particularly creative with the space. The front half of the stage is surrounded by the audience, and there is a tall platform that actors can access from backstage or by employing a ladder. The blocking (staging, in actor speak) was well-done, especially in 'Rent', which demands several different spaces for all the stories going on in the show at once. The student group takes on the challenges of each show and owns them. Mad props! They will all be fantastic when they move beyond college theater into the world of professional theater. TIP: Good theater always makes for an awesome date night.
