I joined Crunch for the closest thing to CrossFit I could find, which is their HIIT program. I am…read morewell versed in CrossFit, but it is cost prohibitive in this area, so HIIT, being a form of CrossFit, was the next best thing. I took 3 HIIT classes for free before joining the gym. The $9.99 per month membership does not include the classes so I signed up for the top tier at $29.99 a month. Definitely doable. Sadly though, the early morning and Friday HIIT classes were cancelled almost immediately after I joined, due to lack of participation. Lucky for me, my work schedule allows me to take the classes at 930am M-T. They also offer them at 6p. Carolyn is the HIIT trainer on the weekdays. I like her style, she's bubbly and motivational and I usually work up a good sweat. I've taken Traci's class on Saturdays, which is very intense. The HIIT zone has all the stuff...Pylo boxes, Battle Ropes, Pull Downs, Bar Jack, Slam Balls, Medicine Balls, etc. Crunch offers spin classes as well as several others. Aerobics, Zumba, All Out Athlete, Chisel, to name a few. I did a couple with Ruth and they were brutal, in a great way. I think the gym has every piece of work out equipment one could ever want, EXCEPT for the Smith Machine, which I really like if I'm lifting because I simply feel safer. The ONLY reason I'm giving Crunch 4 stars instead of 5 is that one day I asked for help understanding a machine and I was kind of brushed off. My fault for not being a little more assertive, being that I pay to play there, Because I came in for the classes and didn't ask for more, that's where I'm at. I'll work it out. All in all, I am enjoying Crunch and the HIIT Zone, even on days when I can't show up for class.

ACAC gyms are the bomb.com!…read more So this experience was kind of like going to CineBistro to watch a movie and then going to... a regular movie theatre. Once you go to CineBistro with the in-theatre dinner service, crafty cocktails, and comfy chairs, it ruins your moviegoing experience forever. You become a movie theatre snob, if you will. ACAC has the same effect... specifically the Short Pump location. I became a member about a year ago and ACAC Short Pump has been good to me ever since. The rooftop bar and pool, the floor to ceiling windows, the cafe, the sprawling classrooms! All of it is top of the line. I've always been curious about the Midlothian location, but when you live in the West End, traveling to that area is like going to Timbuktu. However, I happened to have a meeting in good ol' Midlo so I packed a gym bag and used it as an opportunity to ch ch check it out. When I first walked in I noticed how large and in charge the space was. I mean, it really was ginormous. But, it looked more like a giant warehouse with a bunch of machines than a health club, which is what Short Pump looks like. Also- I thought the basketball court inside the space was really cool until folks started playing and it got real loud. Real fast. That would be annoying to me if I'm just minding my business on the treadmill 3-4 days a week and I have to hear shoes squeaking and voices echoing. I digress. The one way that Midlothian beat Short Pump? The pools! They have amazing pools and an outdoor water park. Yes, Short Peezy has the rooftop pool, but these were so much bigger. In this case, bigger does = better. Another area that gave Midlothian major cool points? I left my favorite earrings on the stationary bike and didn't realize it until I was already in the car on my way home. I called the front desk and someone had already turned them in! I went to pick them up today and they were safe and sound in an envelope with my name on them. Thanks, Midlothian!

Unfortunately the facility's priority is the swim team. From late May through July the outdoor pools are used by the team morning afternoon and evening to accommodate families with different schedules. Even our weekly evening class that uses the deep well has been moved inside so the children who aren't on the swim team can play in the pool. Whenever I have brought this up with management they deny that swim team is their priority and say that we must share the pool. I don't think this is a fair statement since swim team has the pool 8-9 hours a day (not including meets)

The weight area is stacked, plenty of racks, solid free weight selection, and the vibe is actually motivating. You walk in and want to lift heavy. No waiting around forever for equipment, no weird energy -- just people there to work. Only thing I miss is the hydro beds from Planet Fitness. Other than that? No comparison. This is the spot.

The biggest issue is that members constantly leave weights, bars, and other equipment wherever they finish using them, and it apparently just stays there until the next person picks it up and moves it to its new home. Re-racking weights and returning equipment should be the most basic rule in any gym, yet here it feels completely optional. Instead of being able to move through your workout, you will more often than not waste time searching for the equipment you need because someone else could not be bothered to put it back. What makes it worse is that this is not a hidden problem. There are signs throughout the gym reminding people to re-rack weights, but they do not seem to be enforced in any meaningful way. At that point, the signs are just decoration. I also regularly see personal trainers and membership coordinators standing around the front desk joking, talking, essentially socializing while the gym floor stays disorganized. There is nothing wrong with this, and morale does matter, but when there is clearly downtime, no clients to attend to, and the gym is that disorganized, that time would be better spent keeping the floor in order, returning misplaced equipment, and reinforcing the rules that are already posted. Then in the future they could reclaim that time instead of letting the same problem continue. For a paying member, it gets old fast. People join a gym to work out, not to spend part of every session cleaning up after strangers and hunting down bars, plates, or attachments that should already be where they belong. If you are considering joining, just know that the convenience of this location is doing a lot of heavy lifting, because management and basic gym etiquette are not.
