From Downtown San Jose to Santa Clara's Koreatown, I have had my hair cut by a variety of stylists across the region at different price points. I'm usually happy for a couple weeks. Then, the appeal starts to fade. I start fussing with my hair in the mirror or in the Zoom window. Miguel has been my barber for over two years, and he is the first one who has given me the confidence that my hair always looks good. I have none of the anxiety of sitting in the chair I typically have, and it's easy 30 minutes of cutting and conversation. Though the sports memorabilia on the walls aren't exactly my vibe, it doesn't matter to me when the haircut is supreme. What I received was... well, apparently a creative interpretation of one. One thing that really stood out was how much the barbers were talking amongst themselves while working. Conversation is obviously fine, but when it starts affecting attention to the haircut, it becomes a problem. Unfortunately, my haircut looked like attention had definitely wandered elsewhere. I went back the very next day to have it fixed. Ger*** initially asked me to wait 20 minutes, which I said was perfectly fine. Then he changed his mind and said one of his teammates would fix it. Then that changed too, and suddenly I was being asked to book another appointment, presumably so I could pay again to fix the haircut I had already paid for. Interesting customer-service model. What bothered me even more than the haircut was the attitude. Mistakes happen. A professional business acknowledges them and tries to make things right. Making the customer jump through hoops to correct your own mistake is a different story. Unfortunately, this was not my first scheduling issue with Ger*** either. On two previous occasions, I had appointments with him that did not work out. The first time, he told me he was stuck somewhere and could not make it, so somebody else handled my haircut. The second time, there was apparently confusion about the location. So after a couple of past scheduling/service issues and now a haircut that needed fixing the very next day, I think I have given Elevate Barber more than a fair chance; Maybe I was expecting too much. Apparently expecting your barber to keep the appointment, give you the haircut you asked for, and fix it when something goes wrong is now the premium package.
