TL;DR/The Short Version: Really cute bakery/cafe with Filipino influences. I tried their Ube pandesal and it was soft and fluffy. The Slightly Longer Version: I came to Xena's to get some Halo-halo, as I saw online that they had it. Unfortunately, when we arrived they said they didn't have it as they don't have the ingredients to make it. So I got the Ube pandesal ($3.75) instead. They asked if I wanted it heated up and I said yes. The Ube pandesal was soft and fluffy and it had a small amount of cheese inside which was a bit melty from warming it up. The bun was tasty and I enjoyed it. The cafe is very nicely decorated with a black and white colour scheme. They have board games there that you can play. They also have a chess table. They have chairs and tables and also a couch. The cafe is super cute. A great place to hang out with friends. Service was courteous. (186)

Great food, friendly service and fun decor. The cafe lattes were absolutely perfect every time. Made for a nice break from the Hampton Inn's breakfast.

This is such a cute cafe please come and check it out. The decor is just so fun and unique. The whole place is mostly black and white which is so fun. The food is delicious and is unlike anything I've before. We also got the Ube grilled cheese which is so good and a cool idea. Honestly the only down side is the fact that at 5 ( 1hour before closing) they close down the kitchen so you can't get any sort of food after 5. We didn't know this so showed up and ended up eating just desserts.

Cute cafe and the owner is super nice! We had a delicious Filipino style bacon and egg wrap, the perfect size for a light breakfast before touristing it up in Halifax. I had an iced Ube Latte and it was delicious, my mom (a non coffee drinker) took a sip and even she loved it! The Ube bun was really tasty as well. Service was quick and the restaurant was very clean. Would recommend!

The food was absolutely amazing. The service is exceptional though when they have line up and busy they really tried their best to serve it as fast as they can. A little patience won't hurt as you see them serve with a smile and very humble and nice. Our experience was amazing. A hidden gem in halifax that worth the stop and visit. Check their ube products. The ube iced latte and ube pandesal. Cheap and decent prices for sandwiches and breakfast too!

If you're new to the city or have just emerged from being frozen in ice ala Encino Man, let me…read morepile on the bandwagon and tell you this: Cafe Good Luck is really, really good. It seemed a fitting location to caffeinate and get a bite before closing on our first house, which officially mades us Dartmouthians! Having just moved back to Nova Scotia within the past couple years, I'd only been to their smaller, pre-renos location once. Since then, they've blessedly expanded into a neighbouring unit, giving a lot more seating and openness, as they were becoming victims of their own success in the small, original space. I'm a lover of all things breakfast, so I snagged one of their breakfast sandwiches, while my wife stuck to the baked goods and went with one of their lovely blueberry scones. Two medium roast drip coffees, black, completed our refueling. Right out of the gate, the scone was AMAZING! The exterior was lightly crisp, but the interior was moist and soft (sorry, Larry David) - cooked to absolute perfection. There must have been a light coating of sugar to get it so crispy, so I don't know how regular scone batter does that on its own! Topped with a blueberry icing, blue sprinkles and edible flowers, it was a beauty! With my appetite whetted, I demolished my delicious breakfast sandwich when it arrived. The egg was of the scrambled sort, and light and fluffy, complemented by the thick and crisp bacon. A tomato-based sauce, be it jam or a house-made ketchup added a mix of sweetness and acidity, and it was helluva breakfast sandwich. After a year and a half in our home and many returns visits for coffee, delicious baked goods, and one coffee tasting event, we came by much more recently for a weekend lunch. CGL is typically very busy on the weekend, but rainy weather made tables slightly more available. I didn't come here with proper food in mind, but seeing the lemongrass chicken banh mi on the menu quickly changed my mind and appetite. This sandwich had a lot (/everything) going for it - tender, flavourful chunks of moist chicken, big and bright flavours from the crisp daikon and carrot slaw, and cucumber and cilantro for yet more crunch and flavour. Not to be forgotten was the perfect French bread, with its shatteringly crisp exterior and a pleasantly dense and pliable crumb. Cafe Good Luck is easily the best cafe in downtown Dartmouth, with an assortment of wildly good coffees that they roast, top notch baked goods, and a small but mighty mix of hot foods when you need something more substantial than a pastry (but still get that pastry!).

The coffee is smooth - from Have Fun coffee roasters in Burnside Industrial Park. Tried the eggie - what a revelation! Kind of a mix of a croissant with an egg, cream cheese and onions. Super fresh and tasty. The breakfast sandwich was amazing - huge slab of pork as an option! Lots of seating - tables and countertop. As standard utensils they also have chopsticks!!! Apparently gets extremely busy on weekend mornings - glad I got here right at opening! No wifi, parking is on the street.

This is the old Thirsty Turtle location, so I was familiar with the spot, but probably saw a Facebook post about the new business. Generally, I rather support small business restaurants, and the menu looked good, so I'm glad I checked it out. Lucy is very friendly. Most of my visits it has been very quiet, with only her working. Hoping/assuming it gets busier as the day goes on. Mind you, I love my tranquil time to sit and have a delicious meal and Sissiboo coffee with a book in tow. Her menu creations are more healthy than average, different than the basic bacon & eggs, but she seems willing to adjust any dish, so if you are someone who likes to keep it simple, I'm sure that's doable. I loved the Jane's Addiction is the best example of a healthy but tasty breakfast (half a toasted Montreal style bagel that she buys from the business on Wyse Rd, topped with avocado, crisp bacon slices, old cheddar with an over easy egg. Served side side of perpetual salad (mix of kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, julienned apples & beets, shredded carrot, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, sliced avocado, topped with crumbled goat cheese, with poppy seed dressing on the side). The Sweet Waffle (gluten friendly waffle with bacon, whipped cream and choice of sauce) will satisfy the sweet tooth, yet is still a reasonable size to avoid the guilt (I tried the blueberry orange sauce) Yum!. Her Breakfast Bowl (spiced sweet potato home fries topped with two scrambled eggs, tomato, mushroom, spinach, chives with cheddar or goat cheese, meat for $3 extra) is delicious as well. The Classic Lucy (choice of meat and her bacon is cooked to perfection for me, two eggs your way, spiced sweet potato home fries, etc) is just as good as the rest. I can't see everything on the online menu but the Naan breakfast had avocado, cheddar, pico de gallo, egg, etc on naan) and was amazing. I will definitely try some lunch items someday here, but breakfast out is my favorite to eat out and I recommend that to anyone. Atmosphere inside is quite basic, wooden tables, long and narrow in layout with some natural light coming in the front, artwork on the walls for sale from local artists which is nice. I've noticed some people will just stop in to get a coffee and baked good to go. No issues with parking. A nice little spot for the folks in Waverley.

And guys? Please let this review be the catalyst to get you in there. It'll be much easier than that morning was for me and you really should check this one out. Probably under the local radar based on the outdated stereotypes about their location, Alteregos is a equal parts a local hotspot for in-the-know North Enders, and a first impression for visitors staying in the connected hostel. Definitely a strong alternative feel, perhaps even bordering on grunge, this café might actually be one of the hippest that we've got and I can't help but feel like people still don't know about it. The staff behind the counter were friendly and efficient even after I ordered three lattés to go at the front of a growing line. They made great coffee with smiles on their faces and even stopped me on the way out to thank me for leaving a tip. Uh guys? YOU DESERVED IT. I didn't manage to try any of the food (again...I was running late) but the menu ranges from bagels to burritos with local ingredients, vegetarian alternatives, and unique combinations that I can't wait to go back for. Plus? The prices look like they have some of the best deals in the city - so as long as the food measures up, I may have found a new favourite!

McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!
