But the scones are to die for! Delox bagel was scrumptious with a cappuccino. Was nice to sit outside and enjoy the morning.

We didn't dine in as we wanted to take advantage of the sunny (but windy) day. We walked from hotel to this place as we heard the coffee is good here. The line up is long to order, but there are tables inside and outside that can accommodate the crowd. The ordering is very slow. The baked goods are supposed to be baked inhouse fresh everyday so we ordered: - small cappuccino ($3.50): 3/5 looks like 6 oz. More milk than espresso. - small latte ($4): 2.5/5 looks like a 8oz. We can't taste the difference between cappuccino and latte. - pear, maple, pecan, rum scone: 3/5 it packs a lot in one scone. Tasty, but standard. Wish they could've given us the option of heating it up. Customer and kitchen service: 2/5 From order to service, it took about 15 mins. The ordering is VERY slow. Overall: gave this place a try. Stopped in for a late weekday breakfast while in town celebrating our honeymoon and enjoyed a leisurely visit. I went with their freshly made bagel topped with smoked salmon, capers, and cream cheese - it was SO good. The salmon was melt in your mouth tender and made perfect with a squeeze of fresh lemon on top, amazing. I still think about this bagel sometimes... Hubby had a egg bagel and he enjoyed his as well. Great little spot! The iced coffee we ordered to accompany our brunch was also great - smooth and not bitter at all. Will have to come back again someday! read more

Steve O Reno's is just off of the beaten path for me that I always end up forgetting it exists. Whenever I remember I get probably more excited than I should - I love the atmosphere this little coffee shop has. Especially in the summer when the sun comes out - there's something about this little shop in the summer that makes my heart sing. Maybe it's how the light comes in the windows, or the fact that people bring their dogs on walks and stop in to get a coffee on the way buy (optimal puppy petting place!) or just that summer is a generally happy time. Not sure, but I love it! I haven't eaten here before, but everyone I've spoken to about their brunch menu raves about it. The coffee is strong, just how I like it. I was actually walking to another place to grab breakfast but saw a sign on the street corner for Steve O Reno's which was much closer so decided to stop there. This place is adorable, the staff are sweet and the food is awesome! Not going to lie when our plates arrived they looked like nothing special but one bite and I was SHOOK. BEST cream cheese bagel I've ever had lol you wouldn't think a cream cheese bagel would be worth writing home about but trust me it was soooo good. 10/10 read more

Not sure what the fuss is all about. The coffee is good. Mind-blowing? Nope. But good. Their snack selection is a wee-bit lacking when compared to other places. They are so healthy, at times the food ends up not having much taste or overall appeal. Here is the good side to it all. I like the seating. It sort of forces you to break a personal barrier about space by having a large table in the middle of the room where everyone sits side-by-side. Its intimate and fun. They have a cool outdoor patio so you can people-watch. Its quite small though so getting a seat out there on a warm day is difficult. They are also on Brunswick street, very close to Spring Garden, one of the busiest streets in the city. This is good because you aren't far from Spring Garden but not close enough to get all the noise a major street has to offer. The staff are alright. Once again, not mind-blowing and not quite consistent as far as friendliness goes. I have had great experiences with very friendly staff there, and not-so-great experiences. Never rude staff though and I should make note of that. Steve O Reno's is an average coffee shop. It definitely attracts regulars so there may be a few more positive things about it that I've missed. But overall its not the most comfortable, roomy spot when compared to other coffee shops in the city. Their food selection isn't amazing and doesn't have a lot of taste. Its okay in a pinch, but there are literally three or four coffee shops within a three minute walk of Steve O Reno's. I suggest, if you can, walk for a few minutes and try one of them. I love going to indie coffee shops! We came in for coffee and breakfast on the go. We were on our way to catch our flight back home. WOW it was busy! The line went just out the door. We were probably in line for a good 20 mins. Once we ordered our breakfast sandwiches and coffee we had to wait till our food was up. The interior has that cozy, indie bistro look and the people in there were all very colorful with different shades of background from family to hippy. I love it. Our food came up and we munch them hard and fast they were delicious. I had the veggie breakfast sandwich and my friends had some with meat. I would love to come back and order something off their regular menu because while waiting I can smell some real good eats. read more

I went here today cause I wanted some breakfast & had some loose change. Got the egg-o-reno with the works on it & OMG!!! it was so delicious and it didn't make you feel like you regretted either like I have after eating some fast food places version of breakfast. I'd probably give here a 3.5. I've known about the place for years but never think of it when I'm just in the mood for a cafe, and not sure why that is. Anyway, I always try somewhere new for breakfast on Saturday mornings if I can help it, so came here around 8:30 this past weekend, a sunny, nice day in March. Luckily I got a parking space directly in front on the street. Inside, there aren't a lot of tables, maybe eight or nine, all of which are quite tight next to each other. I took a small two-seater in the corner by the window, and my only complaint is that I did feel like I was sitting with the strangers next to me, so it isn't as peaceful as I like a cafe to be. Random merchandise for sale like Steve-O shirts. Basic atmosphere with nothing special. You order at the counter and they give you a number, then bring the food to your table. Friendly staff. I may have waited 5 mins at most for my coffee and Traditional Breakfast ("two medium boiled eggs & toast served with your choice of side(s). Garnished with fresh vine tomato & dill. Skip the bread for a high protein, low-carb option!"). I got one side of avocado, so this was quite a healthy breakfast for $7.00, yet enough to satisfy. 2nd visit another Saturday around 9am. The Veggie Egg-o-Reno for $4 is a small but satisfying breakfast (mozzarella, tomato, red onion, baby spinach on an english muffin). Simple yet had a goodness I can't pinpoint, and great for the health-conscious eater. 3rd Saturday breakfast, and most recent for me: their Hali-Famous Huevos Rancheros ($11 for two over-easy eggs, corn tortilla slathered with homemade refried beans, melted mozzarella, garnished with fresh salsa, cilantro, jalapenos & sour cream). YUM!!! Very filling, tons of flavor, but this is generally a favorite breakfast of mine anyway....(I'd definitely come back, but wish they had a bigger breakfast menu because I always like trying something new each time. May not have been the best day when we went last week - they had issues with making some types of coffee and that seems to have thrown them. Also, the girl at the counter was being heavily trolled by some desperate guy and pretty much couldn't give us much time. Her cohort from the back noticed and waited on us instead. In addition to the limited coffee selections (issues were posted apologetically on the door), they also seemed to be out of pretty much anything cold, and the only baked goods/snacks around were some pre-wrapped gluten-free cookies. Blech! So overall, not a satisfactory visit. read more

This is a really tough one to rate as I would call it inconsistent. I'll go with 2.5 stars because of the egg sandwich I loved the fact that previous reviews had it vegan friendly because that meant options for our kid with an egg allergy. Sadly it was really hot out so my kid did not want the vegan chili and wasn't interested in the samosas or oat cakes. She ordered smoked salmon with some toast and the seeds in the toast got caught in her braces. Not their fault. Also loved the idea of handmade pottery - but I did not see any. Coffee was delicious Smoothie was excellent. Smoked salmon on Montreal bagel was yummy Egg McMuffin was hit and miss. Real cheese, microwaved egg, processed meat. Inside is small and always kind of crowded, but I do like it a lot. Steve-o's serves some of my favourite coffee in all of Halifax. Maybe even in my top five coffees of all time. I love their Americano and Canadianas, but usually go for a straight up black dark roast. I will sometimes go out of my way for their coffee. Their baked goods aren't really my bag. I've only had the oatcake and it was a bit on the seedy side for me (literally. It has seeds in it) and not quite sweet enough. But that's just my oatcake preference. FYI: I do believe it is cash only. On the plus side, I find it reasonably priced for such delicious coffee (I could be wrong, but I believe it is cheaper than Starbucks and the coffee is better). read more

Hey their coffee beans are amazing, but the service is typical Halifax pretentiousness. What is it about Halifax that makes most people behave in such a condescending manner? Is it because they're actually suffering from an inferiority complex? That's my guess. Whatever the case, Steve O Reno's is all about heavy sighs and irritability. Maybe the staff are consuming too much coffee. I was in there today and it was disorganized chaos. The staff are so disinterested in the customers that they have no idea who ordered what and spend half the time trying to sort it out. My little group ordered three pour-over's and I could see they were only making two and were going to serve them in mugs instead of to-go. This is how I met my favourite employee: Professor Bean. I call him that because he looks old, grouchy and wears horn-rimmed glasses. He's probably ten years younger than me, but he's got a Masters Degree in Coffee Beans and he suffers to brew them just right, which understandably takes years off one's life. Anyway...it's very hard to get the staff's attention except to call over to them (they try their best to avoid contact with the Unwashed Masses). So I call over to old Prof. Bean and let him know my coffees are to-go. He pulls a very slow turn to face me, peering up over his Shuron Ronsir Revelation Eyeglass rims and says (barely audible) "we can make them anyway you want." As he slow-turns back, I feel like apologizing for questioning him. See, I respect that Prof. Bean has given his life to coffee beans. He probably talks to them and puts some on his pillow at night so he can fall asleep comforting them. Maybe even carries some in his bikini briefs, the way a Kangeroo carries her joeys in a pouch. He's a Bean Martyr. But at the end of the day, his coffee tasted too acidic and was a waste of 3 bucks. His attitude infected the product. His suffering was meaningless, and so was mine. read more

I love Steve O Renos. I wish it was more on my regular path to caffeine instead of an occasional visit for me because I love their coffee. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the baked goods (fresh made daily!) look delicious. (Although I've never tried them). Today's temptations included a seedy oatcake, flour less peanut butter cookies and fudgy brownies among other treats. When I make back to Steve O Reno's I'll give them a try and let you know. But in the meantime my recommendation is this: If SOR is on your path to caffeine by all means make it your regular joe. You won't regret it. read more

I appreciate any coffee house that has ready brewed cold coffee for my love of iced coffee. I don't want a hot Americano poured over ice that quickly melts and leaves it watered down. I want coffee brewed that's been cooled down in the fridge for a few hours poured over ice... That's an iced coffee. I've found very few places around the downtown Halifax area that can satisfy this somewhat quirky nuance of mine and Steve O's is one of them. The place is always full of people so that's a good sign. However the multiple times I've been there it's been too bloody hot to stay and enjoy the ambiance. The service is always grand and I'll be damned if the baked goods are not always begging me to give in to temptation! Steve O Reno's is A-Ok. To me, its vibrantly coloured interior speaks to summer months and a playful state of mind. Note: With a cash only policy, its important to leave the plastic at home. And I'd say that Its sweet and surely vibe makes it worth the extra cash stop. The summertime patio offers a great view of the downtown hustle of Spring Garden and Brunswick at a distance. I've found the service to be pretty efficient, as staff maintain a friendly and low-key consistency. I'm not a huge coffee/ cappa girl, so I can only wage so far on the java fix. I've gotten good reviews from fellow frequenters, but I do like to stick to my tea. (Which is standard.) Its generally pretty full, lots of people like this spot. Loads of Dal kids and a varying eclectic mix. I like Steve O's to get a little work done or go on my own... although I'm not entirely devoted. I find its location to be at an interesting spot to people watch, but there are definitely other spots around the city I'd prefer ahead of this one. All around great place to sip a lil somethin' and enjoy some good vibes. read more

Went to Steve O Reno's for the second time yesterday. It's a favourite spot for my friends downtown, so we stopped in for a relaxing Sunday morning coffee. I'm not big on coffee to be honest, so I can't really comment on their brew. I was hungry though and scanned their menu to find something I can eat. I have a pretty strict doctor-mandated diet that forbids dairy, gluten, a bunch of veggies etc ... but last time I was at SOR they had Schoolhouse gluten-free goodies. I had psyched myself up for a Cappucino cookie and was disappointed to see they didn't have them. Apparently the Schoolhouse baked goods was a one-off, as I was snootily told by the barista. I inquired if there was anything else suitable for my tummy and was directed towards the GF chocolate macaroons. Which sit in the case with gluten-filled delights . Doh! Why would you ruin a perfectly good GF cookie by contaminating it? Frustrating. I'm not a celiac and took the risk with the cookie anyways. It wasn't too sweet and filled by tummy, but I was still disappointed. Until SOR starts offering some options to people with dietary issues, I'm going to stick to Sunday a.m. dates at Just Us! or the Seaport Farmer's Market. read more

I applaud Steve-O-Reno's for being one of the first proper (that is, serving espresso-based as well as drip coffee) independent coffee places in Halifax. And it's small and buzzy and has a good vibe. But it's been surpassed in coffee quality by many other places around the city. Their milky coffee drinks are served far too large. The last time I was here it took ages to get two sit-down coffees. I'll admit to not having had their food, which people seem to rate. My experiences are solely around their coffee and service. read more

Steve-o-reno's is a sunny and warm, if a bit small, well known coffee shop. The store on Brunswick Street with loads of natural light and its funky purple upholstered chairs reminds me of a garden filled with sunflowers. The friendly alternative, hipster baristas happily serve up your favourite hot and cold drinks without any attitude. I will disclose that the only hot drink I get from Steve's is the mocha, specifically a regular skinny mocha with a bit of whip. For the whole first sleep-deprived year of my daughter's life, I felt like the baristas were saving my life with my daily mocha. They quickly started to recognize me and started my order without prompting. The espresso shots at Steve's are hand pulled, meaning each mocha has its own distinct character. Despite the possibility for a wide variance of taste with different people making each drink, the mochas are consistently uniform, nice and hot with a not-too-sweet chocolate flavour and without a bitter, burnt flavour. I find the regular size portion to be perfect and the $3.30 price tag is a lot less than many other coffee places in town. In the cold drinks department, the mocha is just as satisfying in its iced version. My daughter is a huge fan of the delicious and healthy smoothies. For example, the strawberry smoothie contains no sugar and has all natural ingredients. The fresh baked goods (chocolate chip cookies, lemon squares, and assorted muffins) are very tasty. I will say to stay away from the croissants. They are pale imitations of their Two If By Sea counterparts, but definitely go for anything else. The Egg-o-renos are also delicious and good value at between $4-5 depending on ingredients. Another sign of quality is that you will frequently see Steve himself there. I always think that's a good sign when the owner has an active interest in his business--delivering supplies, etc. He keeps the staff on their toes which in turn means good service! Do remember that it is cash only at Steve's. You don't want to be deprived of your drink for lack of a couple of twoonies! read more

It's official. The good ol boys at 49th Parrallel Coffee have made their way from coast to coast. Not that I can make much fault in any coffee shop owner wanting to purvey the west coast beanery. They're good. So good in fact that I marveled as I drank down my single shot americano in full, sans cream or sugar. The blueberry muffin was a tough pick with a number of choices before me. It was dry, but still tasty. The only boo-urns moment I could see was that it's cashola only folks. It's feels like the type of coffee shop where everyone knows your name and can count on you to order "your usual" to go. Definitely something I can get behind! read more

I have had nothing but great experiences from Steve-O-reno's and would go back anytime. It is a nice break in my day when I can go and get a nice cup of exquisite hot chocolate or cup of yummy herbal tea (although I really wish you could get back the African sunrise herbal infusion again) That was my favorite to date. I sometimes forget about Steve O Reno's and then I have a wonderful reminder by going to the Market or walking down Brunswick St and I think "How could I ever forget about this GEM?!?" I think with all the Starbuck and Tim's bombarding the market it is an easy thing to fall into and get comfortable, but Steve O Reno's keeps things fun and exciting by having an eclectic mix of ingredients and an outgoing staff that always makes you feel amazing about your choice! They keep it simple with the coffee choices, which I prefer. I love me some coffee but I really don't want to to have to think to much when ordering! I also love to support a local hot spot, and Steve O Reno's is just that! They have survived the infiltration of 'mainstream coffee big shots" and are still thriving...That tells me there is something worth supporting there! Not to mention it is always an awesome experience and delicious at that! (My only peeve is it is usually TOO busy to sit and enjoy or meet a friend and relax. To go is the best option but sometimes I am in need of a "eat in" kind of day, and it can be a little difficult.) read more

At the very least the staff of Steve O Reno's has great taste in music. Nothing ruins a cafe experience like Jewel reminding you that your cup of coffee just isn't interested in hearing you gripe. The irregular mugs and Spider-Man Comics there for you to ingest help create an atmosphere of ease. It is a place for a weary rose hawking fellow to escape from the rain or a place for biddies to piece together last nights exploits at the Palace. All are welcome into the nook. The espresso brims with thick crema making bar drinks delicious while the food selection winks at you with their modest prices. Steve O Reno's Cappuccino on Brunswick street provides in both atmosphere and quality, a relief from the clinical experience of the big name coffee shops in the city. read more

A very nice little coffee shop with very good coffee and ambiance to spare. The bright colours and lighting make this a cheerful place to visit. From my experience, it can be a bit difficult to find a spot to sit, but kind patrons on their way out will usually direct your attention to the soon to be vacated seat. The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger and makes the visit that much pleasant. My wife commented that the cappuccino was excellent, and the barrista who made it even artfully created a heart with the milk on froth on top of the cappuccino: cute little touch! read more

Awesome restaurant, if you like the Coastal, you'll love this place. Service is friendly and patient. The menu is vegetarian/vegan/gluten free friendly! There are lots of options, even large meals are prepared fairly quickly and they taste fresh and healthy. Despite the full menu, the atmosphere is similar to that of a cafe, its small and quiet and you seat yourself; definitely a great place to study or work. Highly recommend to students. My Order: traditional breakfast and tea: $11 included 2 med boiled eggs, salmon, 2 slices of g/f toast and sliced tomato. Awesome value! read more

Disappointed! Steve-a-Renos USED to have the best latte in town. Now, it is like water. The baton for AMAZING LATTES has been passed to PAVIA. Maybe just a bad day at Steve's but I probably won't be back unless I have to meet someone there. Head over to the library for Pavia and you will have a much better specialty coffee and probably a better place to meet, too. read more

This place has everything I need for a good breakfast. They have free run eggs if anyone is picky, and their toast is really tasty. I got the 2 eggs and toast with avocado for $7.49(if not mistaken) Choice is alright. They have options with boiled eggs and scrambled eggs too. They also have North Mountain Coffee which is really good! That canadiana coffee really hit the spot! Service is fast enough even though they forgot our tea. I like simplicity and for its location it's a really nice spot. Not the most generous meal you'll get but it's well prepared and presented. read more

I finally snagged a seat at Steve-O's over the weekend and got a proper visit in to this downtown coffee stop. Like I said in my last review, the bright and artsy vibe is a refreshing alternative to the industrial-style chain cafés - it feels like you're hanging out in the Haight-Ashbury of San Francisco. My cappuccino was easily one of the best I've had in the city for sure. You could tell some serious love goes into every single one of those and it was lovely to get to enjoy it in one of their proper cups instead of the to-go, paper variety. They had *great* internet speeds while I was there on an unlocked wifi network. No pushing back through the line in hopes of snagging a password here! That was super convenient. I still didn't really feel hip enough to hang with this sort of a crowd, so Steve-O's won't replace my usual haunts. Still, it'll be at the top of my list for impressing West Coast visitors as a spot with its own special flare. read more

I was going to the downtown Steve Os even before I started guzzling mochas (back then chai latte was what I sought out). I'm also partial to their breakfast cookies - it's like a bowl of granola in a delish portable form! Who says it's wrong to crave cookies in the a.m? And if you're craving something with a little more protein, the egg-o-reno is one of my top three breakfasts sammies. It's almost always busy, and can be difficult to find seats, but I usually drop in on my way somewhere else so I don't worry about that. If you can snag a spot, it's a great place to meet with friends and a good launchpad for a coffee-fueled downtown adventure. I can't speak for the quality of all their beverages, I will say that the chai lattes are generally yummy, and the mochas are as well ... except when they are not. There can be a big difference depending on who is making it, which is mostly okay. However once or twice it's just been not very good. Doesn't stop me from stopping by if I'm in the hood and hankering for some caffeine, but I never assume it's going to be great. With Steve Os it's good to keep an open mind ... which is never a bad idea in coffee shops or in life! read more
