Wow okay I've been blown away by the service I received from Catherine The vibe when you first come in is welcoming and the setting is stylish with lots of flowers and cool "walk around" energy. The staff was kind and offered me snacks and beverages right off the bat. From the moment I consulted with Catherine she asked all the right questions about my hair history and understood the assignment 100%. I'm a new mom and my hair hasn't been highlighted in so long that I wasn't feeling like myself. Not to mention I have thick 3c Curly hair that has older highlights but she handled my hair with care, thoughtfulness and full attention to detail. I have been seeing Special since December, so she is now officially "my stylist" :) When moving to VA, I was looking for a salon that sold R&Co products, as this line is my favorite (I promise it's the best-smelling line of haircare you'll ever use...and they are vegan, cruelty-free, free of parabens & sulfates). I have been to XO about 3 times now. Each time I'm always greeted by friendly faces, when I call I know I'll be taken care of, and they have now done what I like to call the "wheel of fun" twice since I've been a client. It's a prize wheel that you get to spin during a specific month that has some cool offerings. I have actually never been to a salon that does this and I think it's a wonderful way to love your clients! Please keep this perk! Special always takes time to review any hair concerns and talk about the treatment I'm having done during the time of my appointment. I get a root retouch typically every 7 weeks (plus balayage when I need it). She's super friendly and knows what she is doing. Her scalp massages are truly the BEST I have ever received from any salon I've ever been to (and I've been getting my hair done at salons for almost 20 years). Those fingers are magic! I will preface the review by saying that I've read quite a few negative reviews about the owner, which leaves me a bit concerned that I'll be overcharged for something in the future. Surely take the time to review your receipts or ask for an itemized one when checking out to make sure you're paying for a service you've received. I do not like the fact that they upcharge for waves, as I feel this is a totally basic service any salon should provide as part of a cut/color service. My old salon in Pittsburgh did this, so I left. The vibe in this salon is fantastic as well as the staff. I love my visits with Catherine Gibbs. Cathrine G is a level 3 stylist that has an eye for color and knows how to cut and style hair. She is someone I fully trust with my hair and love sitting in her chair. They have a pay scale set up by level stylists and I paid $120 for fun color and a cut. From the first visit to now I have fully trusted her and love how my hair grows out. I get so many compliments on my hair and it is the first time in a long time I feel like my hair looks great all the way to the next appointment. read more

When they took me to the back to wash my hair it was nice looking up at the flowers hanging down and it wasn't just a plain colored ceiling. I thought that was a beautiful touch. When my previous stylist for the last five years announced that she would be moving out of the area I was feeling a little lost. I didn't really have an attachment to the salon she was working out of so I not only needed to find a new stylist, but also a new salon. Via Instagram I watched XO Hair Lab open their new studio in Chesapeake and just the design alone seemed like my kind of vibe. Then they posted some of their stylist's work and it truly captured my attention. But did I really want to drive to Chesapeake as an Oceanfront girl.... nah. I kept up with the search, but also kept following Xo and some of their stylists, including Erin W. As the weeks went by my hair was getting longer and her colorful creations were giving me major hair FOMO. Going for a "creative" color was always something I had wanted to do, but I was afraid of the price and commitment. Finally, one of her pictures popped up on a day I was feeling bold and I just went for it and made the appointment. Y'all- I am so glad I came to Xo. First, this salon is over the top GORGEOUS! Unlike any place hair salon or other that I have seen in Hampton Roads. Stunning details from top to bottom. It just screams "creativity flows through here." They have a hallway with rooms for waxing, massages, and other spa experiences. There is a retail area with skin and hair products. Then the other half of the space is where the hair magic happens. I was immediately greeted when I entered and offered a cup of coffee, tea, or water while I filled out a questionnaire. Then Erin came over and took me back to her station where we talked about what we were doing. I had initially messaged her an idea on Instagram based on two looks that she has done previously. My idea did not involve all over color, just underneath. When I sat down I let my wildest hair dreams took over and I decided that I was ready and willing to take the plunge for full-on-purple hair! She showed me a few colors to get a sense of what I was feeling and we both seemed to have the same feelings. From there I just trusted her instincts and let her do her magic. There is some crazy, galaxy, unicorn, magic on my hair now and I absolutely adore it. Those pictures they post on their social medias aren't edited, they are truly #nofilterneeded. I gave Erin a vague description of what I wanted for cut and color and she made it look so much better than I expected. I am just thrilled with the result. I keep going back to the color- but the cut is also fantastic too! She really listened and delivered. Also, she was really transparent with the pricing throughout the whole process which I appreciated. Having fun hair is a bit of an investment, but it wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. I think all the prices are pretty competitive for the Hampton Roads area, and they do have different "level" stylists that come with different pricing. I also just really enjoyed Erin. She made the time fly by. She was very patient with my questions and gave me great tips for maintaining creative hair for the first time. She let me know what to expect as far as fading, which was also very appreciated. Everyone in the salon was also incredibly warm and friendly, not that stuffy high-end vibe where you would think that kindness costs money. You don't just feel pampered here, you feel welcomed. I've been following Ash on IG since before she even opened XO - I followed the construction & opening & as a fellow stylist it was beautiful to watch the process. I'm a bit more conservative when it comes to hair color but I've loved her hair throughout the years. When we finally had friends transfer to Va Bch I was more than excited to try & book with her when we came for a visit to the area. I even bought my friend a gift cert since she would be in need of a new stylist. I had a great experience when I came in tho Ash was going to be gone I had two stylists - one for my cut & one for my color. The salon is beautiful & every aspect of my service was great. I will admit I wasn't as happy with my cut but I also recognized that tho I brought pics my hair was a different texture/weight than the pic & it's only hair. It wasn't a bad cut, it just wasn't what I wanted. But my biggest issue has come from those I've sent to XO. I'm now reading some of the same gripes my friends have told me - overcharged! Recently 2 friends, who appear to have had the same stylist, were overcharged by about $100. If someone sits in your chair & prices/services are not completely transparent then you've lost clients. Those 2 friends opted for Level 1 stylists, their hair looked great & they loved every aspect of their experience until... they called back & asked for breakdowns of the cost overall that they realized they were charged for items they weren't aware they were being charged for. Not cool. I've lost respect for this establishment & will no longer recommend XO to friends moving to or living in the Va Bch area. read more

I didn't plan on leaving a review until my friend informed me that my photos were being shared on a private Facebook group without my permission, and Ash, the owner and service provider I saw, was complaining about me in a group for local mothers. Being new to the area, I was not aware of the reputation the salon had and wish I had looked at the Google reviews before booking my appointment. It's not a good sign when an owner fights with community members and argues with reviewers. I initially tried to book a partial highlight with Ash. The receptionist told me that what I was asking for was a different service called "baby lights" which didn't sound like what I was asking for and was quoted $500 for "partial baby lights and a cut". I told the salon representative that this was a bit higher cost than what I was anticipating and was told that "if you can't afford it then you can go to a level 1 stylist." Not a good start. I ended up booking a consultation with the owner, Ash. During the consult, Ash spoke over me, and I left feeling concerned that we weren't on the same page although I brought in pictures of what I wanted and had gotten in the past from my previous stylist . I stressed during the consult that I wanted fine partial highlights just around the front and 3-4 foils on the back to mask my grays when I pull my hair back, and I wanted to maintain my natural color as much as possible for low maintenance. I basically asked to have what my previous stylist did before I moved to Va Beach and had for nearly a decade. I have seen two junior stylists in Va Beach, and while both girls were super sweet, I really wanted natural, minimal highlights. I asked for an approximate cost, and Ash told me she could give me an exact price. When I saw the price breakdown, I asked to not have the additional conditioning treatment added since this was something I already owned and did for myself weekly. During the actual appointment it was a very negative experience. Ash complained about many stylists who had quit her salon, colleagues in the local industry, all the way down to her children's school faculty. I could see during the appointment that Ash was coloring my entire head with highlights and taking big chunks around the front, which is not what baby lights are or what was described to me as the technique associated with baby highlights. When I could see the final product, my heart dropped. My hair was completely blonde. I voiced my concerns, but I felt dismissed and again not heard. I was not only charged for the conditioning treatment I had requested not to have but was also charged for an additional "density" charge because she had opted to highlight my entire head instead of honoring what I had asked for. I ended up paying over $400, which was well over what I was quoted. After coming home and crying, I ended up calling a few days later to see if the color could be fixed since it was neither subtle highlights or anywhere close to the pictures I showed her. I was told I could come in for a consultation, and when I did, it was clear there was a lot of tension. At the salon, I was told I could come in for a "root shadow" which would cost $100 more. Ash sent one of her assistants to handle the situation and refused to talk to me directly. I offered to wait until she was available. Once this happened , Ash came over and accused me of trying to get services for free and said she did great work. I tried to assure Ash that I understood she was very talented, but the service was not what I had asked for. She said "Have a nice day" and pointed to the door. The whole experience has felt very belittling from the booking to the check in process which involves documenting your medical history and current medications. I wish any small business success, but hope that Ash recognizes that clients and customer services are important to maintaining a successful business. read more

First of all, I want to comment on how incredibly beautiful the salon is!! The ambiance is really inviting and everyone I encountered was very friendly. I booked a haircut/blow dry with the owner, Ash. She was extremely knowledgeable and kind. She was very easy to talk to, so I really enjoyed exchanging stories with her and hearing her story.. very impressive seeing young women doing what they love. She recommended a shampoo and conditioner for me, which I am now in love with. Very pleasant experience... and the cherry on top.. I LOVE my cut. The parking lot is huge so no need to worry about parking! Also there's a YNot next door so you can grab a slice when you're done if you feel inclined. Update as of 3/26/2020: I now visit the salon to get my lashes filled and brows waxed by the esthetician named Amie. She is so sweet and fun to be around. Decided to try this salon out based off of just their instagram and I am so glad I tried them! Absolutely fell in love with the salon itself. It is extremely cute and well... totally instapic worthy! Bonus: They have a "processing room" where you can sit and relax, have a snack/tea/coffee, while you wait for your hair to... uh "process" I guess? I went on a Tuesday expecting to not be booked until later in the week or the next week because they seem so busy, but they were able to book me for the next day! I didn't have any particular stylist in mind but based of their instagram all their stylists seemed very talented. Anyways they booked me with Mandi and wow... she's amazing! She definitely knows her stuff. She was very informative and explained everything she was going to do before she did it and sometimes during. She also gave me options too on which technique/method I preferred when it came to coloring my hair. She not only listened to what I wanted.... she did it and made it even better! I can't speak anymore highly of her. She's sweet and talented, a great combo! A little over two weeks later I came back to get my hair done for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in and she killed it then too! I've gotten so many compliments on my hair since I got it done, whether I curl it or just wear it naturally straight! I have to be honest and say the cost was a bit appalling when I got the grand total at the end (it's the most I've ever spent on my hair) but hey you pay for what you get and the results were well worth the money. Also they are very proud of their work and like to basically have mini shoots with you after to capture your new awesome hair. The only downside is they don't offer wine like my last salon. (I'm your typical Taurus, so these things matter to me haha) Anyway, I went to get my *VERY FIRST PIXIE* and Jodi was both personable and knowledgeable. She will go OUT OF HER WAY to make sure you're satisfied with your services. I was very nervous, but trusted her and I'm so SO glad I did because she didn't let me down. I'm in love with my pixie and I will NEVER go back to long hair again. (That's saying A LOT from me!) I will be a regular customer of hers for a very long time. I was getting tired of my current hairstylist so I've been on a hunt for a new one. I've heard rave reviews on XO Hair Lab and decided to give them a try. I called not really expecting to get in when I wanted but they had an opening the exact time and day I needed. I walked in and I gasped. It's absolutely gorgeous inside! Behind the front desk is a beautiful wall of greenery. Hanging from the ceilings are beautiful flowers (fake of course). Beautiful lighting. To the right, you'll see merchandise available for purchase. I came in on a Saturday afternoon at about 15 min early. I had to fill out new client info and a Covid release form. Ashley came for me at about 12:10 and immediately I was impressed with her kindness, patience, and knowledge of everything. I told her what I wanted (cut, color, and style) and asked for a ballpark figure of what it will cost. I showed her pictures, she went to the front and came back with a broken-down estimate of what it would cost. She started with my cut. Next, she colored it with foils. Behind the front desk, there's a door; you open it and you'll be shown to their relax/waiting room where it's calming, dark, and full of complimentary drinks available for you while you wait. There's tea, coffee, and cold beverages. I stayed here during the color treatment. When she came back for me I was shown to the wash section. The chairs were super comfy. My view was so beautiful with the flowers in the air. Afterward, she cut and styled my hair the exact way the picture showed. She also took the time to show me how to style it myself. I've been going to the same hair stylist for a decade, but she's become swamped lately so it can take a while to get an appointment. I'd really been wanting a haircut, something a little different to end the year and start a new one. I'd heard awesome things about XO Hair Lab so I knew I could trust them. I called and the receptionist asked me a few questions to determine what I was looking for. She knew just who to pair me with to freshen up my look with something funky and trendy. I was able to get in later that afternoon! Rebecca was a joy to work with. She was laid back and knowledgeable, understanding what I wanted with ease--and I didn't even know what I wanted specifically! She gave her expert opinion to help me achieve a different look without extra maintenance on my end. She made sure to check in with me before cutting my new bangs too short so we'd know I was happy with the length. The salon itself is beautifully decorated. I was so impressed with all the staff and the lively atmosphere. I also like that each stylist has a different "level" of experience which dictates the prices for their services. I've been going here for about a year, never missed an appointment. Had a migraine, made a mental note to call and cancel my appointment for the next day, but it slipped my mind. My appointment time rolled around and I got a call from the salon asking if "I was ok and/or if I was going to make it to my appointment." I let the receptionist know what was going on, and after putting me on hold and talking to my stylist, she came back on and let me know that since the cancellation policy is 24 hours out that I would be charged $90 for my missed appointment. I understand that it throws a wrench in their day when someone misses their appointment, but charging for the whole service, especially after explaining the circumstances and being a loyal, respectful client? This salon is amazing!! I went to see Courteney for a cut, color and express Brazilian blow out treatment and the results are incredible!! I'm a nervous/anxious person when I get my hair done but I showed a photo of a color I had been thinking and Courteney went through everything with me from what to expect, the process and also she actually went through the total cost for everything before she did so there weren't any unexpected surprises at the end. From start to finish it was a great experience, relaxing in the processing area with a hot tea and snacks (provided by the salon) gave me a chance to read and just chill. One of the best things I found was the washing area, the seats and bowl were super comfortable none of that awkward sitting and moving to get comfortable. The smoothing treatment is phenomenal and I am so happy with my hair! I highly recommend the salon and Courteney as a stylist she is super down to earth and feels like a friend chatting away. So I recently moved to the hair from Washington. Obviously my skin had definitely done one changing moving place to place. I did tons of research on different esthetician's in the area but something about Amie was a vibe. I drove to the location from Hampton. It took me about 30 minutes and it was super easy to find. Walked in and it's on of the coolest places I've been in recently. The girls at the front desk are all sweet. Now when Amie got me from the from ant walked me to the back let me tell you it was a VIIIIIIBE!!!! It was a boho lovers dream. So calm peaceful peacock chairs to sit in just amazing. FACIAL: I was given a spa towel to wear for my massage portion. I don't know what this awesome woman was doing but she has hands from God. She did multi steps and explained them all. But the massage part laaaaaawd let me tell you I felt myself dozing off. It felt so goooood. I have never felt anything like it. If I could go daily I sure would. Alrighty where to start. I'm new to the state and XO Hair Lab was recommended by a very good friend. Given the pandemic and lockdowns, moving, and lack of childcare, hair TLC just had to go to the back burner for me for the last year. I had to wait a month for my appointment and make a drive down from Hampton, but guys.. WORTH THE WAIT. First, the salon space itself. Wow. Talk about aesthetically pleasing. It's beautiful and of course makes you want to take a ton of pictures. I love love love the whole space. It's inviting and comfortable and so darn pretty. Second, the people are so friendly and welcoming. The ladies at the front immediately acknowledged me and welcomed me in. Again, I'm a newcomer..so this was such cool environment to walk into. I felt so comfortable chatting away with Catherine, who did my hair. And Carmella who helped out! Catherine did an AH-mazing job with my LONG black dark brown hair and I love it so much that I already have an appointment booked to come back. (Sadly my 3yr old has been sulking about the hair change since I got home last night but oh well) I highly recommend this establishment. This might be my new mom getaway yall. Ladies.. I called XO on a whim one day to get my hair corrected from a long balayage grow out with some pink in it. Courteney Collins was available to take me & I loved her! She took all of my requests without hesitation and made feel very comfortable with everything she did. She explained to me what she was doing when she did it, and fixed my hot mess of a head.
