We would definitely recommend if you're looking for a quasi-rustic rural getaway. Customer service was great. Very hands-off. Spoke with the owners via telephone a couple times... exceptionally friendly. River was fairly high while we were there. Access to the river was a little tough - bank was super muddy and slippery. Use caution. We found quite a ticks on us and our equipment, so pack heavy duty bug spray. Bring your own firewood - we couldn't find much in town or around on the property. Overall, good stay. Not a place for those getting away and having a fun weekend. Nowhere that I could find on their website was their list of rules unless they are buried deep. We rented two cabins for our group and I'll start with the condition. Our cabin had a wasp nest upstairs and we killed several. The air conditioners, while fairly new, are inadequate to keep the cabins cool. The other cabin had no hot water. Stairs leading up the porch are bad. Now for the rules, we managed to break them all. 1. No pets. I agree not a place for them however you better hope a stray doesn't show up or you will be blamed for having them. We were and we had none. 2.Quiet time between 10 pm and 8 am. This means you better be inside your cabin at 10 and not on the porch or at a picnic table talking. We broke this one because we were enjoying the evening and conversation with friends. We weren't loud and you couldn't hear anyone outside anyway because of the noise of the ac. 3.No driving on the grass, granted we did break this one but we went down a gravel road then followed the tree line to get to the river across the field. In our defense there was already a car there when we arrived so thought it was ok. 4. No excessive drinking. What is their definition of excessive? We were called on this one because we had a couple of beer boxes sitting on the porch after we left to canoe the river for the day. 5. This one grosses me out. We had to remake the beds EXACTLY as we found them. Makes me wonder if they change the sheets between guests. Yep, we broke this one because we stripped the sheets then put the comforter back in place. Our group will not be back, after being told all of the above we felt like little kids being reprimanded.

Shortly before we were scheduled to start, Dave pulled up with the guests from the previous tour. They were excited from their trip and each of them had fully caught their limit. At their request, Dave cleaned and filleted their fish for them and they left extremely happy. We were excited to start as well! Dave did a fantastic job, very courteous and helpful. We didn't have to worry about anything. He had rods for us and made sure that we were always able to keep a line in the water. He answered any questions we had and was a true professional. The only reason you got one star is because I could not give you a half!!!!!If…read moreyou are planning a float trip do not use James River outfitters!!!made reservations for 23 people and full payment 2 weeks in advance. scheduled shuttle time was 10 am, arrived 10 minutes early, waiting in long line for check in. finally got to counter and was informed that there was a shuttle fee of $30 for each floating cooler one way . This was an additional $180 cost! there was no mention anywhere when on website! when we inquired about transporting the coolers ourselves, we were told we could not do that; don't know if that meant that it was private property or there was no public access. We surrendered because we had no other options as far and paid their huge fee. Waited over an hour for transportation to put in spot, our group was split up in two buses, loaded kayaks were blocking the seats before we were allowed to get on, and passengers were scolded because some younger people did not climb over the bus seats and were expected to do so versus the older passengers!!! Shouldn't have had to climb over the seats at all. This is also a safety hazard, probably against the law. We finally arrived and only one person there to assist our large group and many other people to put in the river. They did have outfitted canoe kayaks staged for our group, but other groups were taking half of the one set aside for us which further delayed us another 45 minutes, we finally got in the river only to find out that three of the kayaks were broken. Overall, I would rate this outfitter as the worst I have ever seen personnel under demand equipment, and very poor condition. Operation for basic services was not very well organized. Needless to say we will never return to this outfitter or recommend anyone else use them. In fact we will recommend they use anybody else than James River Outfitters!!!!

Beautiful float all season pending river conditions you may or may not drag but that's mother nature. My only complaint is I wish they could get the 5 mile float back as it was perfect for beginners in the group. The 7 mile was a beautiful float just long. Hoping that there will be improvements for the 2025 season but over all a great spot!!
