Y Felin ("the mill" in Welsh) Is an historic working water mill in west Wales, producing stone ground flour. They also sell bread made from their own flour, and do guided tours of the mill.
Classified as an historic monument, there was probably a working watermill here from the 12th century, connected to the adjacent abbey. It is built on three levels, with the water wheel at the back. There is a pretty mill pond next to the property. The history of the watermill is fully documented from the 17th century. After a period of disuse in the 20th century, it was fully restored by 1981 and now grinds wheat, rye, spelt and barley.
A selection of flours and local produce is available from the mill shop, or at St Dogmaels' weekly local producers' market, held on Tuesday mornings by the abbey. The guided tours of the mill which are only by appointment, so please contact the miller.
We bought some of the whole meal bread produced by the mill at the market, and the following day to the guided tour.
The tour was excellent: the miller, Emma, was both informative and very friendly. Once we had seen around the mill, and heard its history, she started the water wheel and we watched the process of flour being made.
A highlight for me was seeing the apotropaic markings on the door of the mill, to ward off evil spirits and witches, which date the door itself to the 16th century!
Note that the mill includes some quite steep steps and the process of making flour is quite dusty!
