I had an awful experience with my first time meeting my therapist. It made me lose faith in their…read morepractice entirely. I got paired with Katrina, and she was awful. She asked me if I loved myself, I said yes and then she continued to spend the rest of the appointment disagreeing with me, arguing with me and telling me that my real problem is that I don't love myself. This was extremely insulting. She made me explain why I love myself, and then didn't believe me that I do in fact love myself. We had barely spoken for 15 minutes when this started and it persisted through the session. I wanted to leave but felt too awkward to hang up- especially with someone sitting there assuring me that I don't love myself. She also seemed to take the HARD stance that going no contact was the only option for my hard family situation and was not interested in hearing anything about my situation she just wanted to tell me that I hate myself and need to go no contact with my mom to prove that I love myself . She also said if I loved myself I would go no contact LOL again.... This is the first time we had ever spoken. She also doesn't have any concept of what adoption is. During my intake I clearly explained that I was adopted at birth, my bio family are passed away and my adoptive father died when I was 13 so I only have my mom. The entire appointment she assumed I was talking about my bio mom and then when I corrected her she started reffering to my mother as "the person who took you in" extremely insensitive and insulting language to an adoptee (I'm also an adoptive mother mind you) Then she asked me where my mom and dad were. (Meaning my biological family I assumed) INSANE thing to ask someone who was adopted at birth- most of us have no idea. She doesn't seem to understand that attachment issues relate to adoption- but she sure thinks I hate myself! Well Katrina I do in fact love myself, which is why I will NOT be seeing you again. You desperately need sensitivity training and to read the most basic of all books about adoption. I don't think I'll ever go back to therapy.
