Talking with her, you can feel the heart behind the place. It's a small family business she and her husband have run for a couple of years, with their son(s) helping out in the shop. The kids had a blast browsing all the trinkets and picked out a few toys, the 3D-printed dinosaurs/snakes were a hit. I grabbed some shea butter ($10) and was honestly amazed by the soaps, candles, and all the eclectic finds throughout the store. Super cute shop. Definitely worth checking out.

In all seriousness, I've appreciated Yankee Candle for this company's innovation and it always seems like its one step ahead when it comes to inventing new scents (seasonal or otherwise) and it's hard to beat the accessories it offers customers to keep those candles burning safely! I got started with Yankee years ago while looking for a gift and ran across a candle with an "ocean breeze" scent. My first became my all time favorite - though it's called "beach walk" now. For the Holidays, anything with evergreen, Alpine, cedar, and - I can't forget mistletoe! :0 are among my faves as well. Yet, we all have our own bests when it comes to the many scents Yankee offers. The service is wonderful and the sales associates are warm and friendly. The store is larger than some other Yankee Candle stores and has many great products. I am allergic to a lot of floral scents, they have so many scents to choose from, there is something for anyone who wants their home or car to smell warm and welcoming. Their candles are far superior to most candles on the market. The tarts are great as are the tea lights and they are usually on sale. I love the wooden wick candles that crackle when you burn them. They also have wall plugins and car scents. They even have room sprays and gel beads for small rooms. The vases and jars holding the candles are all wonderful and they have accessories to hold the candles which are great for home decorating, especially around the holidays. The scenterpiece items are fantastic! I am newly addicted and in love! I love the fall scents that fill up my home. The scenterpieces come in many unique designs that fit any home design. They also come in different sizes and have timers. The store is also great about accepting coupons, whether they are printed or are on your phone. Since it was a Tuesday morning, it was pretty quiet in the area and we had a private class with Chris. Chris was very thorough, starting with candle and fire safety. He took his time showing my daughter the process, from pouring, mixing, balancing the smells and everything in between. He knew a lot about scents and what goes well together. The shop itself was really nice and tidy. Bonus points on the "secret" room that had some gaming stuff like pool table, mini arcade area and some board games. I say secret because the connecting door is hidden as one of the shelves. He let us take our time in the room that is actually an adjoining room to his shop that has its own entrance/exit door. We could have also bought food from next door and the shop offers drinks. They have different events every month. Really neat shop, close to lots of other neat businesses like coffee and ice cream shops.

Today, we brought our Mom to Crafted Scent Bar in Mt Dora for a Candle making experience to…read morecelebrate her birthday. This business has great reviews on other sights and we really really loved this. We decided to do this while we were at lunch and we booked the 3pm session. All 5 of us got to pick from a huge selection of scents and we were allowed to combine as many scents as we wanted to use. There are several selections we could choose from to make at different price points and we all chose the middle price point option to create 10 Oz candles (1 each). The owners were present to help guide us in choosing what scents may complement each other. We were given the glass jars that we chose along with a wick to stick into the jar. After smelling the different scent samples that we were interested in and made our selections, we wrote them down on a card. The owner then brought us each of the scents we chose in individual bottles. We were also given beakers and small scales. We were then instructed how much total weight in scent that we needed to blend. For example, I chose 3 scents to blend, so I started out adding a few drops of each scent into the beaker and judged how much more of each scent to add based upon the smell. The more I added, the better it smelled. I blended Orange Blossom, Plumeria and Gardenia together. Once we had the proper weight in scent mixed, we were each given a pitcher of melted wax and a stick. We were directed to pour all of or beaker of blended scents into the melted wax and stir. Once we had thoroughly mixed our scents into the wax, it was then time to pour the now scented wax into the selected candle jars. The owner then gave each of us a tool to help keep the wick straight in the candle jar while our candles solidified. While they were solidifying, we walked down the street into some of the other shops. We returned a little more than an hour later to pick up our mostly solidified candles to take home with us. You are welcome to bring your own drinks with you. The shop sells already made candles and scents, tshirts, candle and tart accessories etc. the owner and staff (her Mom) are wonderful and enjoyable to work with. Our family really enjoyed this whole experience and recommend this for your family, your work team, friend group, church group, etc. we will most likely do this again and will bring friends to experience this with. All 5 of us chose the same price level making a 10 Oz candle in a beautiful colored glass container with wood lids at ($42 each). Yes you can buy candles fir less money, yes you can choose a less expensive price point....we really enjoyed the experience and the end products we created in their beautiful colored glass jars...and most importantly Mom enjoyed this as a Happy Birthday activity with her two adult kids and our husbands. If you're about supporting local this was as local as it could get. Entrepreneurs with their creations and ideas for all to experience, be educated about, and purchase. There were people set up outside under tents/covers and the prime spots were inside in the AC. Thankfully it wasn't prime time summer for this festival. The sauce winner for today was Mayhem Bros. Their Datil peppers are farmed in the Pomona Park area and they've been on this labor of love journey for about 5 years. They made their way onto some local restaurant tables and the biggest are 4 Rivers and Burrito Gallery. Check them out at www.minorcanmayhem.com. Their sauce adds heat and flavor and it's so good. I don't know what other events they have here but this festival was enjoyable. I'll be back for sure and will keep an eye out for other events.

It was the 12th annual Datil Pepper Fall festival. We arrived just before noon and there was plenty…read moreof free parking. There were over 30 vendors inside and outside offering a wide variety of datil products. The SJC Master Gardeners had their pants for sale as part of their fundraising activities. The most interesting find this year was a sugar coated Datil peppers. If you like heat this ones for you. Hot hot hot!!! It nearly killed me. I ended up buying five different flavored Datil jellies from a few vendors. We had some interesting samples too. The Ghost pepper on cream cheese on a cracker was firey hotness. We bought a few tasting tickets for a dollar each and had some delicious samples from different restaurants in the area. We voted for our two favorites. I highly recommend this festival if you're a gardener and love plants but especially if you love spicy food and sauces.
