I've lived in Salmon Arm for years and finally decided to Yan's a try. I had a craving for chicken balls and boy was I not disappointed. These were hands down the best chicken balls I can remember having. Not only were they tender and a delightful size, you get a lot of bang for your buck! The buffet. Like yesterday's leftovers. This is Canadian Chinese food you'd get in a bar. Deep fried coatings on the chicken and pork could break a tooth. Really dry. And all the sugar sauces on the other deep fried stuff. Dessert pieces of cake smaller than a thumbnail. Not worth the price or inevitable indigestion. read more

Don't come if you're dining alone. They'll treat you like shit and rush you out before you're halfway through a bowl of soup. I work all over BC, have wonderful meals in small towns everywhere. This was a pleasant surprise. I had the best Spicy Salt Squid I have had in 40 years. Beautifully spiced and a large portion. I wish I had taken a picture. The Ginger Beef and Fried Rice were also excellent. The service was friendly and efficient. The ambiance was greatly enhanced with the presence of the owner's children helping out. Yans in Salmon Arm is hands down the BEST restaurant. They are always friendly, happy to help and the food is fantastic. To Derek C reviewing how they were rude to his wife? Was there and YOUR WIFE BUDGED in front of a line up of us, all clueless and entitled and then we watched her pick a fight and be very disrespectful to the Owner. I don't want people like you at MY fav restaurant because your wife should have been sent like a child to the back of the line but they decided NOT to embarrass her. The worst Chinese food I've ever had :( Beyond that, I ordered 2 cans of pop. They told me they do fountain pops - which was fine. And she said they're also out of ice (what kind of restaurant doesn't have ice?!) anyways I told her that's fine. They gave us TOTALLY flat pop. It was disgusting. Who does that?! i wanted to give this restaurant 3 or 4-stars but the customer service i received was beyond horrible. i was on a chinese bus tour and this was the only restaurant nearby the hotel that we were staying in. the other tour members bought the meal option and was already eating dinner while my mom and i ordered our one dish of pan fried rice noodles with beef. this happened at 5:30pm and while we understood that there was a large group, we were on a tight timeline because our bus was supposed to leave at 6:15pm. i had merely asked one of the waitresses, who was chinese, about our dishes who reassured us that it will be fine. the waitress that was serving us decided that was too much because when 6pm rolled by and i asked our tour guide if time was a little short, and he followed-up for us. she snapped back to our guide saying that we had already asked about our dish and that she is on it. i didn't really understand the flow of that kitchen because there were other walk-ins and take-outs that got their food before us. i ended up asking for a take-out box at 6:03pm because it was clear that my mom and i won't be able to finish it. they ended up charging us for said box and then the dish came out. the food was good - fresh and hot frm the wok but the horrible customer service gave both my mom and i a sour taste in our mouth. all in all, i can see why this place is popular but unless you have time to waste or you order ahead for take-out (which you still may have to wait another 20mins for your order), i'd say steer away from this restaurant. read more

We have just eaten the worst food that claimed to be Chinese ever! We have had Chinese food in China, San Francisco, Los Angeles & Vancouver (as as many small towns throughout Canada & the US) & this is definitely the worst. We were taken in by the only snow peas ever seen at this restaurant, on the huge ad board on the way into Salmon Arm. Firstly I would like to state that that the only Chinese vegetables were a few bean sprouts in the over cooked noodles they called chicken chow mien. There was maybe 2 tablespoons of chicken in this and the standard veggies; broccoli, cauliflower, celery & carrots. We had War Wonton which had the same veggies with maybe 2 thin slices of bok choy. The barbecued pork had absolutely no flavour, but this went along with the 3 water soaked prawns & scallops. The soup base was totally tasteless & we thought it must have been prepared that morning, if not the day before. Then the chop suey... more of the same ...broccoli, cauliflower, carrots & mushrooms (not Chinese). Next the crunchy fried prawns ( read 3/4 batter wrapped around 3 skinny shrimp). Almond chicken, battered with maybe a 1/4 tsp of almonds ground on top. Oh, no chopsticks! Surprise, because I'm sure the cook is a drop out from some cooking school. Never heard of seasonings or flavour. HOWEVER, the fortune cookie said "A good reputation is more valuable than money". They need to think about that. read more

If I could give it less stars I would. If it is famous it has to be for the greasy, disgusting food. Egg fu yong with no sauce. I have never had dumplings so greasy that I couldn't eat them but I tried two dumplings and was sick the whole night from their greasy crap. Yet, they were doing a killer business of people probably who never ate there before. I had to throw everything in the garbage it was so vulgar. This was takeout because that is all they are open for. The only time I have ever had Chinese food this inedible and disgusting was in 1976 in Salt Lake City Utah. I have Chinese in tons of places and there are plenty that are bad but edible in Calgary but this is one of the worst. read more

The food is okay. I was on a Chinese group tour here and they brought us here for dinner. I'll admit that it taste a lot better than the other Chinese restaurants that they took us to. However, it is not really Chinese food. I think it's more westernized, so I wouldn't recommend this place if you want some traditional Chinese food. read more

Famous Yan's? Not sure about that but they are definitely average enough in my books, and that's average in a good way. The decor is dated for sure but things are clean and tidy. Ding ding! Winning me over from the get-go already. I love it when places are spotless. Awyeeeee Being a pescatarian, I was only able to sample two of their many dishes during my dinner there. I had the broccoli and shrimp scrambled egg. The broccoli looked, as I've said before, average. But in a good way I guarantee you! It wasn't too mushy or too raw, and the hint of garlic made it that much better. The shrimp scramble was slightly watery but I'm not complaining seeing as how it wasn't a vegetarian dish that I could eat. The service was on point too! Despite one of my tablemates hogging the teapot in their corner of the table and insisting that nobody needed anymore tea, the waitress saw my empty cup and specifically asked me if I wanted more. Normally we always order from Jade Palace but we couldn't tonight and we really wanted Chinese food for supper. Against our better judgement we ordered from Yan's....we ordered the dinner for 4 so we would have leftovers for lunch the next day. I made a slight alteration to the package and did what I thought was a swap! It wasn't a swap at all, I was charged for the swap and the additional dish even though I didn't get the original one and I wasn't told to is was the way they roll! The food finally came and it was bland and lifeless and swimming in sauce . What would have cost us $55 max ordering from Jade Buffett, ended up being $81.00 from Yan's. very disappointed and we won't be ordering from here again. We'll stick with our Jade Buffett. The best part amount the whole meal was the containers the food came in which is what I'm sure the high mark up on this food is billed out, at least I can keep them and re-use them, saved myself $10 having to buy a box of them from Wal-Mart! read more

I'm ethnic Chinese, from one of the culinary capitals of Asia, living in North America for years now. The only good thing about the food here is that it is indeed fairly authentic if you order the right stuff. Unfortunately authenticity is only half the equation...the food I had here was authentically bad, like what you'd find served at a family table in an unhappy silent mid-coastal Chinese family's table. They have a chicken dish done in soy sauce that's half decent. But I wouldn't eat here unless I really wanted Chinese food. read more

We live near Yans family restaurant and the food there is hit and miss if you go to eat, but if you order out I find that the food is always fresh and never had a bad take out experience. The young lady that runs the counter is a character and is due to have a baby soon, it will be hard to fill her shoes. read more
