There seems to be some confusion in the reviews about which establishment this is; there are two…read morerestaurants helmed by female chefs in Paris, one named simply "Buvette" (by the American chef Jody Williams; there is also a NYC outpost of the same name) and one called "La Buvette" (this is the correct page for the restaurant operated by Camille Fourmont). While I love NYC's Buvette, La Buvette is an entirely different sort of restaurant and is my NUMBER ONE recommendation for friends visiting Paris who enjoy natural wine/small plates/a slightly chaotic atmosphere. I make sure to come here as many times as I can whenever I visit Paris, and I've even gone to a La Buvette pop-up in NYC when the chef came last year. I'm definitely a La Buvette groupie. A buvette is a restaurant that sells wine to go and to drink in situ, along with a selection of small plates. While I hate the ubiquity of the term 'tapas' to describe dishes that are not quite entree-sized, you can think of La Buvette's dishes as basically tapas: smaller portions meant to be ordered in multiple and shared over a bottle of wine. The wine selection here is tightly curated and I've never had a glass that I disagreed with -- everything is pretty simpatico if you're into this style of wine, and the staff are quite helpful in steering you toward bottles you might enjoy. In past visits, I've often found myself ordering over half the menu, which is written on a mirror-board on the wall and changes daily. Everything is quite simple, made with excellent ingredients, and quite good. Note: this is not a full-service kitchen, so don't expect an elaborate dinner. Think of this as an appreciation of simplicity and purity of flavor, and you'll have a much better time than if you expect a 10-hour cassoulet or something. Get some cheeses and charcuterie, and absolutely get the big white beans with citrus zest. Savor the flavors. While I'd love for this to remain a hidden gem, the secret has definitely gotten out, and it's not really much of a "neighborhood" establishment anymore. Expect a line unless you get there quite early, and note that you won't have any privacy because the space is tiny, and you may end up drinking your wine standing by a tiny corner of the counter. To me, that's part of the charm, and Camille Fourmont has created quite a remarkable place that I find simply perfect. It's a must-visit in Paris!

Hidden in an angle street of rue de la roquette, this place has a dozen wooden tables and benches. It is fully decorated by its wine bottles so you know what you step into. The owners are extremely friendly and passionate about the wines they serve, which they know perfectly. They go mostly for organic wines and have a preference for Languedoc reds which they find have a better quality/price ratio. There are a few wines from the other regions as well. In total, you'll find probably 50-80 wines on the menu, all deliberately chosen by the owner who will be happy to talk about them. This place is a mix between a wine shop and a restaurant: you can buy the bottles to go or drink it in the restaurant for an additional premium (6 or 8 euros, can't remember). The food is simple but good: charcuterie or cheese plates to share, some grilled meat or fish. Try the calamari and the burrata as appetizers, they're pretty good. All in all, you spend a great time in this place: you discover new wines and you eat some good food. This is a great place to bring a group of friends!

We ended up going with Ava and her boyfriend Yassine, lining up after dinner, around 10:30 on a Friday night. There was a small crowd waiting outside, and it took us about a half hour to get in. The place was fun and busy, and as charming as I remembered. We got seated in a loungey upstairs area and received excellent table service. There was free popcorn and even a complimentary round of welcome drinks, a strong mini cocktail of Gentian and peated whiskey. The menu had changed over completely since my first visit. The cocktail offerings were printed onto thick printed leaves arranged on metal branches, forming a cool little tree centerpiece that replaced a paper menu (there was also a more detailed menu available online). Several of the cocktails were labeled with raindrops, indicating they were available as mocktails--helpful for Yassine, who doesn't drink alcohol. Matt and I shared two rounds, sampling a good chunk of this new menu. Everything was delicious. The Carbone was a bright, interesting cocktail made with beetroot, black garlic, Origin smoked gin, and Dartigalongue Un-Oaked, served with a cube of frozen yogurt that melted lushly into the beet-red drink. The Serre Solaire was smooth and boozy, with black tea, green walnut and milk, Cointreau, and Rémy Martin cognac. The Résilience was a highbrow tropical cocktail, with sorghum, pineapple sage, Pasquet cognac, and Savanna rum. The Permaculture was creative and flavorful, with chestnut, butter, wakame umeshu, and Avallen Calvados. I also tried a sip of Ava's Aquaponie, a light, juicy vodka drink with basil, lemon and sweet clover, St. Germain, and Grey Goose. I love Little Red Door and I'm glad I got to visit a second time and share it with my husband. We do live kind of far away, but I hope a third visit is in the cards.

The bar is long and narrow, with a spiral staircase at the end of it - the upstairs wasn't in use when we visited so I'm unsure if it opens or not. Like a lot of traditional French bars, Leché Vin doesn't open until the evening - but it's worth the wait. It's completely falling apart - the chairs are ripped and raggedy - but this all adds to its charm. As does the religious iconography plastering the walls - seriously, it's saints and popes everywhere you look. Until you go to the bathroom. Now, I like a nice clean bathroom - this however, is anything but. And not just because it wasn't particularly hygienic (it could totally do with a good scrub) - but because it is covered in hardcore pornography. I already knew about this, so I wasn't bothered, but it really amused me to watch the unsuspecting be enlightened! Oh, the toilet is a traditional European one - ie, basically a porcelain hole on the floor. The beer was dirt cheap, cold, and good. We had a great time and I wouldn't hesitate to come back here.

It is small, intimate, and walking in for the first time gives you the sense that you know the place. This is soon followed by feeling like you made a good choice if you travel to find local color and flavor. I had a beer on my first visit on a Friday night. Perhaps it was more than one. Each order was recorded in a ledger at the end of the bar. On my second visit on the following Sunday, i had the charcuterie and red wine. My two meats and two cheeses -- I asked the bartender to pick -- were delicious and almost more than I could eat. I sat in a worn-out high backed chair and listened to American jazz from the trio behind me. They stopped playing too soon for my taste and the small place, crowded, thinned out quickly. Apparently the real Parisians had a new week ahead for which to prepare. This faux Paeisian was happy to linger and will be happy to return.

I fell in love with it a couple of weeks ago during my first trip to Paris, where I ended up visiting it not once but twice. It's a dive wine bar, but with so much character, in every nook and cranny. I had read reviews on both TripAdvisor and Yelp, albeit dated. There is no name listed on doorway so could be hard to miss, but something about the red lighting and energy just drew me in. (That and some trusty reviews online...) The first night was a little intimidating at first. A group of older gentlemen, all friends and all seemed to know the owner, were deep into conversation at the bar. However, as soon as I walked in, solo, that very owner, Jean-Loup (he made sure I captured the correct spelling, vs. some renditions in other reviews ;)) warmly greeted and welcomed me. From there on, it was bliss. For me personally it was a pivotal moment because just a few days prior to that, I was still a bit fearful about exploring the city solo with very little grasp of French, but that night, I felt brave and wandered by Bubar. So glad I did. Jean-Loup not only nailed a few wines for me that were all sheer perfection (there's a daunting list but disregard that and just tell him what you're in the mood for because he'll find something spot-on), but offered a small plate of nibbles, after asking if I preferred 'fruits or vegetables'...a sweet, personal touch. I enjoyed a wonderful night just respectfully observing his interactions with his buddies (clearly he is very adored here, and a local staple,) while he checked in on me regularly to ensure I was doing fine. Such an amazing evening. The following night I had to stop by again just to say goodbye. I simply won't be forgetting Jean-Loup and Bubar anytime soon.
